Chapter 26 - The Midnight Encryption

The peace of the penthouse wasn't shattered by a scream or an alarm, but by the persistent, rhythmic vibration of the emergency transponders.

In the master suite, the dim blue light of the floor-runners pulsed—a signal that only Chris or Lucy could trigger.

Jason was awake instantly. He sat up, his heart hammering against his ribs, watching Alicia shift from a deep sleep into a deadly, alert crouch in a single fluid motion. She didn't ask what was happening; she simply reached for the holster on the nightstand.

"Stay here," Jason whispered, though he knew she wouldn't.

When they reached the living area, the atmosphere was frozen. Chris and Lucy were already at the central glass table. Chris looked haggard, his tie pulled loose, while Lucy was staring at a scrolling wall of red code with a grim intensity.

In the hallway, Jake and Kristen appeared. Jake was buttoning a tactical shirt, his face set in a stony mask, while Kristen was leaning against the doorframe, crossing her arms over her chest, her eyes sharp.

"What is it?" Jason asked, his voice booming in the quiet room.

"What did you find?"

Chris looked up, and for the first time, the "Architect" looked truly shaken.

"We didn't find it, Jason. It found us. A burst transmission hit our secondary server five minutes ago. It bypassed every firewall because it was signed with a digital key that only three people in the world possess."

Lucy stepped forward, her voice tight. "It's a 'Command Override' signal. It was authored by the Director. The Master."

Lucy tapped the glass table, and a holographic document expanded in the air. It wasn't a video or a hack; it was a formal, cold military directive.

"Assets 01, 05, and 09," Lucy read aloud, her voice trembling slightly at the mention of their old designations.

"Your sabbatical is over. The technology you 'borrowed' from the state is to be returned to Pier 17 by 0500 hours. Failure to comply will result in the immediate activation of the 'Scorched Earth' protocol against the Elite Security infrastructure."

"Scorched Earth?" Jake growled, stepping into the light.

"That's a total wipe. He's threatening to burn the whole company—and everyone in it—to the ground just to get to us."

The "lovely" night they had just shared felt like a distant memory. The Master wasn't just coming for the girls; he was coming for the life Jason and Chris had built. He was forcing them to choose between their empire and their hearts.

"He's playing us," Kristen snapped, her fingers twitching near her blade.

"He knows we won't let him touch the firm. He wants us to walk into his trap at the docks to 'save' Jason's money."

"It's not just about the money, Kristen," Chris said softly, looking at Lucy.

"If he triggers that protocol, he leaks every encrypted file we have to the black market. The chaos would be global. He's holding the world hostage to get his 'property' back."

Jason walked over to Alicia. He didn't look at the hologram; he looked only at her.

"He thinks I'll give you up to save my company. He thinks I'm a businessman first."

Alicia reached out, her fingers lacing through his. Her face was calm, but her eyes were like cold fire. "He's wrong. He thinks we're still his assets. He doesn't realize that a soldier with something to love is a thousand times more dangerous than a soldier with nothing to lose."

Jason turned back to the group. The CEO was gone, and the Commander had taken his place.

"Chris, Lucy—I want a digital shroud over Pier 17. Use everything we've got. If he wants a meeting at 0500, we'll give him one. But we aren't going there to negotiate."

Jason looked at Jake and Kristen, then at his brother. "We're going there to delete the Master from the system. Permanently."

The team stood in the center of the penthouse, the blue light of the Master's threat illuminating their faces. The flirting was over. The rest was done. It was time to show the Master why you never threaten a family built on both logic and love.
