Chrono forced mana through his damaged channels again.
Pain exploded through his body instantly. Blood ran from the corner of his mouth as dark mana gathered violently above his hand, unstable enough to distort the freezing air around it.
*Maximum Doom.*
The frozen battlefield trembled beneath the pressure forming around the spell. Cracks spread across the ruined streets while surviving soldiers instinctively backed away from the unstable mana surging around Chrono.
Lin's eyes widened immediately. "Chrono, stop —!"
Too late. The spell had already begun forming.
Then — the snow stopped falling.
Not naturally. It simply *froze* in the air. Even the crimson frost spreading across the battlefield slowed unnaturally.
*Skarnyx*'s smile disappeared first.
Then Chrono felt it — something approaching. A deep pressure wrapped around the battlefield before anyone saw where it came from. The air itself felt heavier.
*Older.*
Then — a black line crossed the battlefield silently.
Chrono's *Maximum Doom* split apart instantly. The condensed spell shattered into fragments of dark mana before dissolving completely into the freezing wind.
No explosion. No resistance.
*Just erased.*
Chrono staggered violently as backlash tore through his mana channels. "…What…?"
Someone stood between them and *Skarnyx*.
Black hair. A skull-shaped mask. Dark demonic mana drifted around him like smoke crawling through the air itself. Yet strangely — the snow never touched him. It *vanished* before reaching his body.
The battlefield fell silent. Even the surviving demons stopped moving.
For the first time since the battle began — *Skarnyx* stopped smiling. His crimson eyes shifted toward the masked figure.
"…So you've come."
*Recognition.* Not surprise.
The masked man remained silent at first. Dark smoke-like mana twisted quietly around him while the battlefield itself seemed to lower beneath his presence. Even the crimson frost surrounding the area weakened slightly near him.
Chrono felt it immediately.
Pressure. Not like *Skarnyx*.
*Worse.* Heavier. It felt less like mana — and more like reality itself was bending around him.
The masked figure slowly turned toward Chrono. Though his face remained hidden beneath the skull-shaped mask — Chrono felt the gaze lock onto him completely.
"…Interesting."
His voice sounded calm. Quiet.
Yet the moment he spoke —
*BOOM.*
The air compressed violently across the battlefield. Several injured soldiers collapsed instantly. Cracks spread across the frozen ground beneath their feet. Even the lingering demonic mana became unstable beneath the sheer pressure wrapping around the battlefield.
Lin nearly lost her footing.
Vael, still barely conscious near the shattered remains of the Minotaur, slowly narrowed his eyes toward the newcomer.
Chrono's instincts screamed at him.
*Danger.* Not ordinary danger. Something worse.
Then the masked figure spoke again.
"*Kaeron.*"
Just a name. No title. No explanation.
Yet the pressure surrounding the battlefield deepened the moment he introduced himself.
Chrono realized something terrifying immediately.
*This pressure… was restrained.*
*Kaeron* finally glanced toward *Skarnyx*. "The objective is complete."
*Skarnyx* lowered his head slightly. Not submission.
*Acknowledgment.*
"Understood."
Then — the demons began retreating. One by one, surviving demons disappeared into the crimson snowstorm surrounding Azure Cloud City. Some dragged wounded creatures behind them. Others dissolved directly into crimson mana.
No one moved to chase them. No one could.
Chrono's body finally gave out completely. The backlash from forcing *Maximum Doom* twice tore violently through his mana channels. He dropped to one knee. Blood hit the frozen ground beneath him.
Then —
*RUMBLE.*
The entire city shook violently. Everyone froze.
A deep metallic scream echoed beneath Azure Cloud City — enormous, *ancient,* like the city itself was breaking apart.
Another tremor exploded beneath the streets. Buildings tilted dangerously. Several damaged structures collapsed instantly. People screamed across the battlefield.
"What's happening?!"
A city official stumbled through the ruined streets in panic, blood running down the side of his forehead. His voice cracked as he shouted:
"THE CRYSTAL CORE IS GONE!"
Silence.
The official's body trembled violently. "The floating crystal — someone stole it!"
Another massive tremor shook the city. The floating pathways surrounding Azure Cloud City flickered violently before entire sections collapsed into the depths below.
"The city is falling!"
Panic erupted instantly.
---
The demons were gone.
But the nightmare remained.
Azure Cloud City no longer floated proudly among the heavens. Fragments of broken platforms collapsed across entire districts while smoke rose endlessly from ruined streets.
And beneath all of it — the city slowly descended.
The battlefield remained frozen beneath silence for several moments. Then the city broke.
Civilians flooded into the ruined streets despite soldiers shouting warnings to stay back. Some searched desperately through collapsed debris with bare hands. Others ran directly toward fallen soldiers scattered across the battlefield — crying, screaming names, begging for movement.
A woman collapsed beside a motionless knight covered in crimson frost. "Wake up… please… wake up…"
He didn't move.
Nearby, an elderly man dug frantically through broken stone while blood covered both his hands. "My son —! He was stationed here! MOVE!"
Several exhausted soldiers immediately rushed over to help despite their own injuries.
Medics carried wounded civilians through smoke-covered streets while surviving dojo disciples searched for anyone trapped beneath the debris.
A young soldier suddenly froze halfway through carrying bodies. One of the dead was someone he knew. He couldn't keep walking after that.
Not far away, a little girl sat beside a covered body, holding a wooden toy sword tightly against her chest.
*Waiting.* Hoping someone would tell her it wasn't her father beneath the cloth.
The city no longer looked majestic.
*Azure Cloud City looked broken.*
Children cried openly beside damaged homes. Some civilians simply sat silently among the destruction — unable to process what had happened.
And above all of it — the city no longer moved.
The Crystal Core was gone.
Chrono barely remained conscious long enough to see the destruction before darkness swallowed him completely.
---
When Chrono opened his eyes again — everything hurt.
Pain spread through his body the moment he breathed. The backlash from *Maximum Doom* still burned beneath his mana channels like molten needles.
Chrono stared at the infirmary ceiling quietly for several seconds before attempting to sit up.
Bad idea. A sharp pain shot through his chest instantly. "…Tch."
"You're awake."
Chrono turned slightly. A medic stood nearby, exhaustion visible beneath her eyes. "You should still be resting."
"How long?"
"Two days."
Chrono frowned slightly. Two days. The battle was already over.
The medic handed him water quietly. "The city leaders are holding emergency meetings. Repairs haven't even started properly yet."
Chrono drank in silence.
The infirmary was overcrowded. Rows of injured soldiers filled nearly every available space. Some slept peacefully. Others screamed in pain even while unconscious.
One bed remained completely empty — except for folded white cloth resting carefully on top.
Chrono understood immediately what it meant.
Then he heard it.
*Bells.* Slow. Repeating.
Chrono turned his head slightly toward the open infirmary window. Outside, white smoke drifted upward into the cold air.
A funeral ceremony.
The ruined central plaza had been cleared. Rows upon rows of covered bodies rested beneath white cloth. *Too many rows.*
Soldiers stood silently beside them while civilians gathered behind the lines. No speeches echoed through the plaza. No victory celebration.
Only grief.
A mother cried openly while clutching a bloodstained military cloak against her chest. An old man remained kneeling beside one covered body without moving at all. Several dojo disciples carried incense quietly through the crowd while surviving soldiers saluted silently as more bodies arrived.
Even from this far away — the sorrow reached him.
The city hadn't won.
*It had survived.*
A soft knock interrupted the silence. The medic returned quietly. "…Your friend left already."
Chrono glanced sideways. "Vael?"
She nodded. "He recovered faster than expected."
*Of course he did.*
Chrono slowly stood despite the lingering pain.
"You're leaving already?"
"Yes."
"You're barely standing."
"I noticed."
Before she could stop him, Chrono quietly exited the infirmary.
---
Azure Cloud City no longer resembled the proud floating city it once was.
The streets were crowded with reconstruction teams, wounded survivors, and soldiers maintaining emergency order across damaged districts.
Everywhere Chrono looked — someone was missing.
A child waited silently beside a ruined shop that would never reopen again. Several soldiers carried covered bodies toward the funeral grounds. A group of civilians argued desperately with officials over missing family members.
And above all of it — the city remained grounded.
*That alone unsettled everyone.*
Chrono walked quietly through the damaged streets until he reached the outer gate district.
Then he stopped.
Vael stood near the shattered gate entrance, staring toward the distant roads beyond the ruined city. Bandages wrapped around parts of his arms and shoulders. Yet somehow — he still looked ready to fight.
"You're leaving."
Chrono approached slowly. "Yeah."
Cold wind moved quietly through the broken gate behind them.
"…Good."
Chrono raised an eyebrow slightly. "Good?"
"Stagnation kills faster than battle."
Spoken calmly. Like fact.
Vael finally turned toward him. "You were already planning to leave before the battle."
Chrono didn't deny it.
Vael's gaze shifted toward the distant roads once more. "…I'll come."
Chrono blinked once. "Why?"
A brief silence followed.
"You're still incomplete." Chrono frowned slightly. "But you grow quickly."
The wind passed quietly through the ruined city behind them.
"I want to see what you become."
For the first time since arriving in this world —
Chrono felt like he wasn't walking forward alone anymore.
