Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: Road Bandits

After a simple breakfast, the group once again set off toward the granary.

Three hours later, just as the van was about to pass an intersection, UMP45 suddenly slammed on the brakes. The massive inertia sent everyone in the car lurching forward. AA-12, who was sitting by the window, smashed her head into the seat in front of her and cried out in pain while clutching her head.

"What happened all of a sudden?"

Lux asked. He knew UMP45 wouldn't brake without a reason.

"Hehehe, looks like someone wants to cause us trouble. There are nails scattered across the road ahead, some mixed in with minced flesh. Really despicable people."

UMP45 sneered. As soon as the van stopped, four men wielding cleavers ran out from the roadside woods. One of them immediately scattered another handful of nails behind the van.

"Get out of the car and hand over your supplies! If you behave, you won't suffer. If you don't come out, I'll smash the glass, and then get ready to be chopped to death!"

The man with a bloodstained cleaver shouted loudly from outside.

Lux was so angry he laughed. So these survivors were playing road bandits here. He had to admit, it was eye-opening.

"Lux, what should we do?"

UMP45 asked with a grin.

"Make them clean up the nails on the road. Then kill them all."

"Then I'll roll down the window?"

UMP45 lowered the window. The four men holding cleavers froze when they saw the black gun barrels aimed straight at them.

Then they burst into laughter, their eyes filled with lust as they stared at the Tactical Dolls inside the car.

"Did these people get scared stupid?"

Lux felt a bit speechless. This was the first time he'd seen people laugh while being stared down by gun barrels.

"Trying to scare me with toy guns?"

One middle-aged man scoffed and reached out to push away the submachine gun in Sten MKII's hands.

After all, gun control was extremely strict in this country. If these girls had pulled out pistols, he might have been wary.

But seven or eight rifles? That was just ridiculous.

"Idiot."

Before the man's hand could touch her gun, Sten MKII pulled the trigger. A burst of blood exploded from the man's head.

The gunshot and the blood spraying from the man's skull instantly snapped the remaining three back to reality.

"Holy shit, they're real guns! Run!"

"All of you, drop your weapons and raise your hands. Take one more step and I guarantee every one of your heads will explode."

HK416 said coldly.

The three froze. Two of them stopped immediately and obediently dropped their cleavers. The last man ignored the warning and tried to dash into the woods.

The next second, just as HK416 warned, a bullet precisely struck the man's head.

Seeing their companion die before their eyes, the two men who stayed put wet themselves, their legs shaking uncontrollably.

"Tell me. How many groups have you robbed here?"

Lux stepped out of the car with a katana in hand, asking coldly.

"T-three groups. We just wanted to grab a car and hide in the mountains, but robbing supplies here lets us survive better. brother, we were momentarily possessed. We won't ever do this again."

"And the cars you robbed?"

"We… we drove them to the right side of the intersection. They're all fine, except one with both front tires punctured. There's only one spare tire, so it can't run. The other two cars are fine. brother, you can take them all."

The man said ingratiatingly.

"And the people whose supplies you stole?"

At Lux's question, both men tensed up, neither daring to answer.

"Not talking? My katana doesn't reason with people."

With a sharp motion, Lux drew the blade. The cold edge rested against the man's neck. Feeling the burning pain on his skin, the man screamed in terror.

"D-don't kill me! We killed the men. The women were kept… y-you can have them too. They're in the tents over there."

"You two, go clear all the nails from the road ahead."

Lux revealed a cold smile. If his team's combat power had been any weaker, the outcome would've been disastrous. These two were dead for sure.

Sensing the katana being withdrawn, the two obediently ran to the road ahead and hurriedly picked up the nails. Lux, meanwhile, took out a compound bow from the system space and drew an arrow from the quiver, nocking it to the string.

Last time, he couldn't hit zombies a hundred meters away. At less than ten meters, he refused to believe he'd miss.

Living moving targets like these weren't exactly common. It was a good chance to practice his archery.

When the two finished clearing the nails and turned around, one of them suddenly felt intense pain in his abdomen. Looking down, he saw a compound arrow embedded there.

"W-why are you killing me? Didn't you say you wouldn't kill us…?"

"When you killed others, did you ever think about that? Besides, I never said I'd spare your lives from the beginning."

Lux showed a sinister smile. The two men looked at him as if they were staring at a demon.

Lux drew another arrow. Seeing this, the other man immediately turned and ran. A sharp whistle cut through the air as the arrow pierced straight through his head.

"I curse you! Even as a ghost I won't let you go! Damn brat, you lied to us!"

The man with the arrow in his abdomen gritted his teeth and tried to lunge at Lux. A flash of steel passed, and his head rolled onto the ground.

"I wasn't afraid of you when you were alive. Why would I be afraid now that you're dead? Die properly in your useless rage."

After saying this dismissively, Lux put the compound bow back into the system's storage space, searched the corpses for three car keys, then cleared the nails behind the van and got back inside.

"Let's go to where they parked the vehicles. After that, we'll take two cars."

"Brother Lux, what about the women they mentioned? If you don't intend to take advantage of them, then to our current team they'd be nothing but a burden. I don't recommend bringing them."

Lianne asked.

"They drove here intending to hide in the mountains anyway. I'll leave them one car and tell them the location of the military-established shelter. What they choose after that is up to them."

Lux replied calmly.

"Tsk tsk tsk, these adults are disgusting. Serves them right to die."

Candice said with disgust as she looked at the corpses outside the car window.

"In essence, they were just trying to survive, doing whatever it took. We… we just haven't been forced to that point yet."

"Candice, remember—my victory isn't because I'm on the side of justice. It's because HK and the others all have guns. Our strength surpasses theirs, that's why they died."
