Chapter 5: The Unseen Curriculum

The System's new task glowed with sterile insistence.

[Weekly Directive: Achieve 'Adequate' Rating in Crystal Resonance Exercise.]

[Context: D-tier students will attempt to synchronize with a refined, inert beast crystal to prove stability and controllability. Failure results in re-assignment to deep-mining labor.]

[Reward: 'Energy Manipulation' advanced to Level 3. +1 System Cache Unlocked.]

Sanitation duty had been a humiliating reprieve. Now, Kaelin stood with her cohort in a sterile white lab, facing a different kind of trial. Each student stood at a station where a small, polished blue beast crystal a "tamed" shard, drained of wild power rested in a containment field.

Proctor Varr monitored them, arms crossed. "The crystal is a mirror. It will reflect your Ability's signature back at you. You must match its frequency, resonate with it, and stabilize the feedback loop for ten seconds. This proves you are not a risk to the city's power grid. Begin."

Across the room, Kaelin saw Saba at his station. His posture was relaxed, but his focus was absolute. Rourke caught her eye and gave a slight, mocking salute.

Kaelin placed her hands over the crystal housing. The refined gem hummed with a low, artificial pulse. She reached out with her Energy Manipulation, a gentle probe.

The crystal's feedback was immediate a sharp, discordant vibration that shivered up her arms. Her System interpreted it.

[Resonance Frequency Detected: 4.7 kHz.]

[User Frequency: 3.1 kHz.][

[Discrepancy:High. Stabilization Probability: 12%.]

She adjusted, pushing her energy to a higher pitch. The crystal's hum rose in response, a whining, unstable note. Sweat beaded on her forehead. To her left, a boy's crystal flashed red and let out a piercing shriek. He was pulled from his station by an Enforcer, face pale with terror.

Deep-mining. A short, brutal life.

She pushed harder. The crystal's frequency was a wall. Her Level 2 energy wasn't pure or strong enough to match it. A dangerous, desperate thought crept in. The fire ability, the Thermal-Kinetic Conversion, was raw power. Could she use a spark of it, just to jolt her primary energy to the right frequency?

It was insanity. It was the only chance she saw.

She focused, dividing her mind a skill her System was forcing her to learn. She maintained the Energy Manipulation flow with one part of her consciousness. With another, she dipped into the quarantined, volatile core of Ability-2. Not to summon flame, but to draw a sliver of its transformative heat inward, supercharging her own energy from within.

A flash of searing pain raced up her nerves. Her veins glowed faintly orange under her skin for a millisecond. The Energy Manipulation flared, its frequency spiking violently.

[User Frequency: 4.65 kHz… 4.68… 4.70 kHz. MATCH.]

The crystal's hum suddenly smoothed into a harmonious, steady tone. The containment field glowed a stable blue.

Stabilization Timer: 10… 9… 8…

She held it, teeth gritted, feeling the internal heat scorch her from the inside. The System blared a warning about systemic stress, but she clung to the resonance.

…3… 2… 1. Exercise Complete.

The crystal went dormant. Kaelin snatched her hands back, her fingers trembling. She subtly wiped a trickle of blood from her nose a capillary burst from the strain. The taste of copper filled her mouth.

"Adequate," Proctor Varr announced, marking her slate. But her eyes lingered on Kaelin a moment too long. The proctor had seen the faint, subcutaneous glow.

As the students filed out, Mack shoved past Kaelin, his granite shoulder knocking her into the wall. "Freak," he muttered, but there was less conviction now. He'd seen her succeed where others had failed.

In the corridor, Rourke fell into step beside her as if by accident. "Interesting technique," he said quietly, his eyes forward. "Using a secondary energy source to catalyze the primary. Very… inefficient. Very painful. Also undetectable to standard scanners." He paused. "Saba wants to talk. Storage bay seven. After lights-out."

He melted into the crowd before she could respond.

That night, Kaelin lay in her cot until the barracks stilled. Her System displayed its reward.

[Weekly Directive: COMPLETE.]

[Reward Claimed: 'Energy Manipulation' Level 2 -> Level 3.][

[New Capability:Sustained Emission. Energy constructs can be maintained for up to 30 seconds.]

[+1 System Cache Unlocked.][

[Cache Contents:'Basic Stealth Weave' Schematic.][

[Description:An energy pattern that bends low-frequency light and sound around the user. Duration: 60 seconds. Cooldown: 12 hours.]

A stealth ability. The System was arming her for espionage, not just combat.

She activated the new 'Stealth Weave.' A shimmer passed over her skin, and the world muffled. She slipped from her cot, becoming a ghost in the dim emergency lighting.

Storage bay seven was a cavernous space full of obsolete training drones and broken machinery. Saba stood in a pool of pale light from a high window, the moon etching him in silver.

"You're learning," he said, without turning. "But you're leaving a trail. That resonance exercise… you cooked yourself from the inside to pass. Proctor Varr noted 'anomalous thermal byproduct.'"

Kaelin let the Weave drop, becoming visible. "I had no choice."

"There's always a choice,"Saba said, finally facing her. "You can choose to be a tool for the Families, you can choose to die in the Dregs, or…" He gestured around at the forgotten machinery. "You can choose to become something they can't control."

"What do you want?"

"The same thing you do.To break the system that breaks us. Your unique… configuration… is of interest. But interest is not trust." He stepped closer. "The Academy isn't just a school. It's a filter. The 'failed' students aren't sent to the mines. They're taken to a sub-level facility. We don't know what happens there, but the energy signatures are wrong. We need data. Your System can get it."

[New Critical Task Received: Infiltrate Sub-Level 3.]

[Objective: Retrieve energy signature logs.]

[Alliance Parameter Updated: Cooperation with 'Red Bull' cell.]

[Reward: Information. Ability-2 'Thermal-Kinetic Conversion' advanced to Level 2.]

"You want me to spy for you."

"I want you to survive,"Saba corrected. "And to do that, you need to understand what you're really up against. This is your first real test. Not for them. For us."

He handed her a small, smooth pebble a raw, unregistered beast crystal shard, still warm with latent power. "A gift. For your System. It prefers them refined, I'm sure. But the raw ones have more… personality."

He faded back into the shadows, leaving her alone.

Kaelin clutched the warm crystal. Her System pulsed greedily.

[New Power Source Detected: Unrefined Beast Crystal (Minor).][

[Compatibility:High.][

[Warning:Volatile. May enhance abilities unpredictably.]

She wasn't just a student anymore. She was an asset in a shadow war, and her education had just taken a deadly, definitive turn.
