Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Proposal at Home

The morning light spilled through the wide windows of the Konate living room, glinting off the polished wood floors and filling the space with warmth. Livia sat calmly on the couch, her posture poised, her hands resting lightly in her lap. Around her, the conversation buzzed with opinions and advice, a careful mix of persuasion and caution.

"Livia," her mother began, smoothing her skirt, "we need to talk seriously about Alexander Marus. He's intelligent, accomplished, and… well, undeniably handsome. You can't deny that he's a catch."

Livia tilted her head slightly, a small, amused smile playing on her lips. "I see the appeal, Mother," she said lightly. "Although, if I were to cast a vote, I'd probably side with Grandmother. We both know how we feel about the Marus family."

Her grandmother, seated elegantly in her armchair, raised a finger in mock warning. "Exactly. Proud, controlling, and far too used to having their way. I've never liked them, Livia, and I don't intend for you to be swept into their world."

Livia chuckled softly, meeting her grandmother's eyes. "Point taken, Grandmother. I'll take your advice seriously but I'll hear the rest before making any grand statements."

Her grandfather, sitting nearby with a faint sparkle in his eyes, leaned forward. "Ah, but consider this, Livia. I've been friends with the Marus grandmother for decades. Alexander comes from a strong family, influential and capable. Opportunities and connections like that… they're not things you stumble upon every day."

Her mother nodded, her tone encouraging. "Exactly. Alexander could provide stability, respect, and even some exciting prospects for the future. I think it's worth meeting him openly. Who knows you might even like him once you see him in person."

Livia listened carefully, her expression thoughtful yet relaxed. "I'll consider it, Mother. But I'll also weigh my own feelings carefully. I want to make sure it's the right decision for me."

Her father, reclining slightly in his chair, reached over and brushed her hand gently. "Whatever choice you make, Livia, I support you. Don't let anyone else's wishes outweigh your own judgment. Marus, someone else, or no one you must follow your heart."

The room fell into a brief silence, each family member exchanging subtle glances. Livia remained composed, neither tense nor overly formal, simply absorbing each perspective with the calm confidence that had always been part of her nature.

The quiet was broken by the cheerful sound of the front door opening. Tiana bounced into the room, her bright energy instantly noticeable. "Good morning, everyone!" she called out, sweeping in with a wide grin. "How are my favorite Konates today?"

"Morning, Tiana," Livia's mother replied, smiling. "Come in, dear."

Tiana laughed, stepping forward with a playful curtsy. "Ah, the noble Konates! I come to offer my services as chaos consultant and general mischief-maker."

Her grandmother chuckled softly. "You certainly bring energy into this house, young lady."

Her grandfather gave a mock stern look. "And how do you plan to survive a full conversation without causing a minor diplomatic incident?"

Tiana saluted theatrically. "I'll do my best, sir! But I can't make promises."

Livia shook her head, laughing lightly.

"Liv, come on. Let's go chat somewhere quieter."

Livia rose gracefully, following her friend down the hallway to her bedroom. The door closed softly behind them, and the world of polite arguments and family expectations fell away.

Tiana flopped onto the bed with a sigh. "Okay, spill. What's all this fuss about?"

Livia sat on the chair beside her desk, relaxing into the moment. "It's… Alexander Marus. The family has been talking about him, and well… the usual opinions. My grandmother warns me against the Marus, as always, while my grandfather and mother are pushing for me to meet him. Father says it's up to me. It's… complicated."

Tiana's eyes sparkled. "Ah! The golden boy of Lavida! You don't seem too worried, though. I thought you'd be pacing the floor."

Livia laughed softly. "I'm not. I can appreciate everyone's advice without letting it control me." She paused, then admitted softly, "But there's something else… the man from my dreams. I can't seem to get him off my mind. It's strange sometimes he's kind and gentle, sometimes… hurtful. And now I wonder… maybe Alexander can help me forget him."

Tiana grinned knowingly. "Ah, so he's haunting your thoughts, huh? Well, maybe this Alexander fellow can be a welcome distraction. Or maybe he's just another plot twist waiting to happen."

Livia smiled, shaking her head lightly. "I suppose we'll see."

Meanwhile, across the city, Kael Marus settled into his new base. The city was unfamiliar, full of bustling streets, narrow alleys, and opportunities to observe without being noticed. His new office had been carefully set up with multiple layers of security guards stationed discreetly, controlled entry points, and rental accommodations for anyone who might need temporary workspace under the guise of a business center. It was more than a hideout; it was a hub of observation, planning, and control.

He spoke quietly to his PA, Darian, who monitored activity from one of the office's secure rooms. "Everything is set. This city will serve as our base of operations. From here, I can track the family and the connections I need, without raising suspicion."

Darian nodded. "And what about her?"

Kael's gaze remained fixed on the city skyline. "She's part of the plan. But not the target. Observation first, strategy second. Every detail, every movement… catalog everything."

The city hummed below him, a maze of opportunity and caution. Kael's mind wandered briefly over the places he had traveled routes taken, risks navigated, and plans executed. Every experience had led him here, to this city, this base, and this mission.

Back in Livia's room, Tiana leaned back on the bed, her grin wide. "Honestly, Liv, I think it's kind of fun. You get to sit in the middle of family debates, dream about mysterious men, and maybe get a handsome distraction thrown in for good measure. It's almost like a storybook."

Livia laughed softly, shaking her head. "You make it sound so simple, Tiana. Life is rarely that neat."

"True," Tiana admitted, "but it doesn't mean we can't enjoy the chaos."

Livia smiled, feeling a flicker of relief. The conversation, though serious, didn't weigh her down. She could navigate the opinions of her family, enjoy Tiana's lightheartedness, and still keep her own thoughts private especially the thoughts about the man from her dreams, the one she could not get out of her mind.

And far away, Kael continued to plan, secure in his new city, organizing his network, his operations, and every subtle thread of information that would one day lead him to Lavida. Every detail, every movement, every unspoken gesture would be part of the web he was weaving.

The threads of destiny, observation, and decision intertwined quietly, and soon, the city, the family, and Livia herself would find that nothing in Lavida or beyond would remain untouched by the careful hands of Kael Marus
