Chapter 85 - Chapter 85

The First Time Is Always the Most Important.

S.H.I.E.L.D.

Seeing this title, Director Nick Fury furrowed his brow.

He recalled the first time he had played the Captain America video.

It had said:

Captain America would discover the truth, far beyond his imagination.

At the same time, he would encounter betrayal and deception.

Could it be…?

Was it about that highway assassination attempt?

But… who could possibly assassinate Steve Rogers, Captain America?

Given his performance during the Battle of New York…

Though officials hadn't made it public, rumors still circulated among the public.

Captain America had joined the Avengers.

And the Avengers had just secured a victory.

It could be said that Captain America wielded enormous influence, both officially and behind the scenes.

Even rivaling the President of the United States!

That was the kind of man he was.

Who could dare to assassinate him?

Who would even try?

Stark Tower.

Tony's speculation was the complete opposite of Director Fury's.

He sighed.

Tony: "Sigh… looks like Director Nick Fury is about to be assassinated."

Everyone present felt a little confused.

Happy was the first to speak.

Happy: "No, Tony, you've got it wrong! We're watching a video about Captain America. Those iconic scenes were all about him. So the next video must be about him too. This isn't a special on Director Fury—why are you saying he's getting assassinated?"

Pepper rolled her eyes. After a moment's thought, she explained:

Pepper: "No, Happy, you're wrong. Wait for the next video. Anyone could be assassinated. Falcon running in the park could be assassinated. Black Widow driving her supercar could be assassinated. Even Peggy Carter lying on a hospital bed could be assassinated. But Captain America… he's the only one who won't be assassinated."

Happy looked confused. He couldn't make sense of the twists.

So he asked:

Happy: "Why can't Captain America be assassinated? Is it because Steve Rogers is Captain America?"

Snap!

Tony snapped his fingers, taking control of the conversation.

Tony: "Exactly! That's it! Because he has the title Captain America! Do you know how much influence he wields after the Battle of New York? It's at its peak! Even more than mine."

He continued:

"Sure, it sounds a bit Versailles-like, but my influence is nothing compared to his. Online, my name appears in blue text. Even someone with a little influence like me could get kidnapped by the Ten Rings. Imagine what would happen to anyone under Captain America's influence. But Steve? He's basically the most influential man in the world!"

"If the Ten Rings were blind enough to try to kidnap Captain America… they'd face the wrath of the entire world! Perhaps even Mister Ten himself would personally return Captain America safely."

"So, in this video, anyone could be assassinated… but not Captain America!"

Happy nodded, finally understanding. But he had one more question:

Happy: "Then Tony… why did you say Director Fury is the one being targeted?"

Tony patiently continued:

Tony: "Among the famous figures appearing… Falcon? I barely know him. Black Widow? One of the top heroes—you'd better be fast if you try to hit her first. Carter? That's Captain America's Achilles' heel! Touch her, and you're touching Steve himself. Any country in the world would happily help assassinate whoever targets Peggy Carter to gain favor with Captain America. Loyalty debts are the hardest to repay."

"So now… that leaves only Director Fury. Some hostile forces may dislike Captain America, but if they can't get him, they have to settle for someone close to him—like Fury. It's the same old story."

Tony smiled wryly:

"There's an old Chinese saying: the tree that stands out in the forest gets blown down. Looks like Nick Fury's in for a rough ride this time."

[On the highway.]

Director Nick Fury was driving a custom AI-equipped Jeep, en route to S.H.I.E.L.D.

At the intersection, the traffic light turned red. Fury stopped his vehicle.

A police car stopped beside him.

Fury, bored, glanced at the cops.

Two white officers, wearing sunglasses, were staring at him.

It felt like he was a wanted man.

Fury was momentarily speechless. Growing up in this country, he had endured a lot because of his race.

Even after reaching the top of S.H.I.E.L.D., he still felt… like a second-class citizen.

Disrespected.

Irritation bubbled within him, now heightened.

Fury: "Oh, officers, is there a problem? Want to check my ID?"

He snorted and refocused on the road ahead.

Fortunately, the light turned green.

The officers in the police car grumbled but honked and flashed their lights, as if saying, "We'll let it slide this time," and drove off.

Fury continued driving calmly.

He had seen this situation countless times. If he weren't in a fancy car, dressed like a government official… even with a green light, the clueless cops might have stopped him anyway.

Forget it. S.H.I.E.L.D. comes first.

Barely two meters down the road, a police car slammed into Fury's Jeep from the left, sending it crashing into a fire hydrant.

The car that had traveled less than five meters suddenly reversed!

Reed blocked Fury's vehicle before he could react.

Two more police cars came, completely surrounding his vehicle.

At this moment, there were four police cars, plus a wall—blocking Fury's Jeep from every angle.

And more vehicles were approaching… some clearly specialized tactical units.

Director Fury had no idea what was happening.
