Even after the school bell rang, Ritesh didn't leave immediately.
The classroom was emptying out.
The sounds were normal.
But there was a strange delay in the air.
As if everything was waiting,
without knowing what it was waiting for.
Ritesh was walking down the corridor
when he noticed
Sanjay wasn't behind him today.
That had never happened before.
Outside the gate, traffic was usual.
Rickshaws.
A tea stall.
Noise.
But something was off.
Three boys were standing across from the school.
No uniforms.
Slightly older than school age.
One of them was on the phone.
His eyes were fixed on the gate.
Ritesh stepped outside,
and the boy ended the call.
It wasn't a coincidence.
"You're the one, right?"
a voice came from behind.
Ritesh stopped.
Didn't turn.
"About yesterday," the boy said,
"in school."
Ritesh asked calmly,
"What do you want?"
It was a direct question.
That's why the boy laughed.
"Relax. Not a fight."
The second boy stepped forward.
Old scars marked his knuckles.
"Just wanted to see," he said,
"if you're really like that or not."
"Already seen," the first boy said.
"Yesterday."
Silence settled in.
Ritesh realized
these weren't Sanjay's people.
They weren't above him either.
They were in between.
The middle layer.
"You want to stay limited to school,"
the third boy said,
"or go further?"
This time Ritesh looked at them.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
The boy smiled.
Not friendly.
Professional.
"Some things," he said,
"start outside the uniform."
He gestured toward a gym nearby.
An old building.
A broken signboard.
"It's open in the evenings."
Ritesh didn't respond.
So the boy didn't push.
"Your choice," he said.
"But after yesterday, people don't just watch.
They take notes."
All three turned away.
No drama.
No threat.
Ritesh stood there.
This wasn't a fight.
This wasn't fear.
It was an invitation.
On the way home, the route was the same,
but his thinking had changed.
School was no longer the end.
It was just the entry point.
And whatever lay ahead
wasn't part of the syllabus.
That night, Ritesh didn't set an alarm.
Not for the morning.
For the evening.
