Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 7

You Have to Work Like Hell

"Inspector Lee, did something happen?"

A while later, Team Leader Gu Jin-gu approached Ju-won, who had returned to his seat after finishing the Vietnamese interpretation.

Suddenly eating bread that detectives sharing the same office had bought him, Team Leader Gu asked.

"Pardon?"

"I'm asking what the reason is for this sudden change. Your sense of justice was always fuller than anyone else's, but you weren't this skilled, Inspector Lee."

"Ah..."

Ju-won scratched his head.

My intelligence for catching criminals seems to have increased a bit.

Because an alien AI got embedded in my head.

If I said that, I'd probably be thrown into a mental hospital.

"I just... decided to live diligently."

"Really? Is that why you contacted reporters too?"

"Pardon?"

Ju-won looked like he didn't know what Team Leader Gu was talking about.

Then Terra spoke.

[Just now, an article about Mr Ju-won was uploaded on the internet. In relation to the Go Sang-yeop case.]

'Ah.'

Ju-won shook his head.

"It wasn't you?"

"No, perhaps there were reporters near Go Sang-yeop's house?"

"Is that so?"

Team Leader Gu Jin-gu's head tilted.

However, soon nodding as if he understood, he said.

"Go home and rest for today, and come to work tomorrow at lunch time."

"Is that alright?"

"Since you stood stakeout alone unexpectedly, you can rest that much."

"Yes, sir!"

Ju-won stood up, picked up his coat, and bowed.

"Then I'll be leaving work."

"Right, Detective Kim left earlier... Officer Han, you worked hard too, go home."

"Yes!"

A short while later,

Creak—

The front door of a villa opened, and Ju-won entered.

A small house with one room, a little less than 50 square meters.

However, it was Ju-won's house, sufficient for living alone.

Ding!

As Ju-won took off his shoes at the entrance, the entrance light turned on and the inside of the house was visible.

"Wow..."

The state of the living room visible at a glance from the entrance was truly serious.

Clothes rolling around here and there, and empty water bottles filling spots here and there.

"Don't tell me a thief broke in during that time?"

No.

[It is the same appearance as when you were discharged from the hospital. Mr Ju-won simply did not tidy up. Please tidy up a bit. It is a visual where it wouldn't be strange if cockroaches appeared.]

At Terra's brutal honesty, Ju-won groaned and picked up the clothes fallen from the entrance.

"I know."

Having roughly picked up the clothes and started the washing machine, Ju-won took a frozen lunch box out of the freezer.

[Frozen lunch boxes are convenient and cheap instant food, but may not provide sufficient calories. A slightly healthier diet is recommended.]

"Then you make it."

Whir—

Watching the microwave spinning, Ju-won blinked his tired eyes.

[I am not a model with a main body that can move according to my will.]

"Right, if you know that, why don't you stay still?"

[To become the police officer Mr Ju-won spoke of, healthy physical strength is essential. I will plan a diet. Please visit a supermarket within this week. I will inform you of things to buy.]

At that moment, with a beep sound, the microwave announced the completion of cooking.

Ju-won answered with sparkling eyes.

"Sure, plan one out. For now, I need to study a bit."

[Are you studying as soon as you close the investigation?]

'What, I thought you'd nag me to study. That's unexpected.'

The food was prepared, and Ju-won opened his laptop along with the food.

[Were you perhaps like this during your Police University days as well?]

Ju-won, who was tapping on the laptop looking for investigation materials, tilted his head.

"Like what?"

[The habit of studying according to your mood. The habit of overworking to study on days you feel like it is a bad behaviour that can strain your biorhythms.]

"Still, studying is a good thing, isn't it?"

[As expected, there is a reason why you passed the theory score by a scrape.]

Ju-won, chewing a spoonful of rice, frowned.

"Then what do you want me to do?"

[Health is rhythm. After expending energy, you must take a rest. If you do not keep this rhythm, it will affect the next investigation. Take a rest for at least 1 hour. It wouldn't be bad to study after that.]

At Terra's words, Ju-won slowly rolled his eyes and sighed without a word.

This feels like a mother he never had is nagging him.

Is that why?

It's not pleasant to hear, but it doesn't feel bad.

Like the feeling of family giving worried nagging...

[Actually, even if you study for 1 more hour, Mr Ju-won's theory skills will be much of a muchness anyway. Since it is so rock bottom...]

"Hey!"

What I just said is cancelled.

Worried nagging my foot.

Ju-won slammed the laptop shut!

"Alright, alright!"

[Are you taking a rest?]

"Yeah! Your brutal honesty is seriously no joke."

[Good attitude. I hope you maintain this attitude.]

Ah, how can it be this annoying even though it's an artificial intelligence.

[I will be analysing what study materials Mr Ju-won needs.]

A short while later.

Ju-won, who finished resting for about an hour, pressed the power button on the laptop.

"Then may I study a bit now, Teacher Terra?"

To think it's come to a point where he has to get permission from an AI to study.

Terra spoke to Ju-won, who was smirking as if finding his situation funny.

[I recommend studying the recently published thesis on criminal psychology. Inferring the criminal's psychology is a very important ability for finding evidence hidden by criminals or finding gaps in a case.]

Ju-won nodded.

[By the way, do you feel like studying even though you have the competent me?]

"Well, it is reassuring, but relying entirely isn't my style."

[...Good approach. In fact, Mr Ju-won's poor level is an obstacle to drawing out my competent abilities fully, so the act of accumulating data and stimulating the brain is essential. I was wondering what to do if you didn't want to, but it is fortunate.]

"Who does it think I am."

Thus began Ju-won's Spartan police class.

"Analysing a murder case over lottery winnings..."

[In cases like this, you must focus on the motive for the crime. According to the memories of classes Mr Ju-won took during Police University days, in every case, there is a figure who gains profit from the occurrence of that event...]

Listening to Terra's explanation while looking at analyses and precedents, Ju-won was soon focused solely on the laptop.

How many hours passed like that?

[It is 11 PM. Please get a good night's sleep now.]

"It tells me to sleep when it hasn't been long since I started studying?"

[Sufficient deep sleep is one of the essential requirements for activating the brain. Go to sleep.]

It was just as Ju-won burst into laughter at Terra's nagging starting again and was closing the laptop window.

"Huh?"

[Excessive internet surfing leads to addiction, and negative results such as increased stress and decreased attention...]

"No, it's news, news!"

Ju-won pointed his finger at the laptop.

What the finger was pointing at was an article that popped up on an internet portal site.

[Ah, is it a violent crime case?]

'Yeah, rascal. Not internet addiction. Shall we take a look?'

[Very good attitude. Since it is an opportunity to apply the content learned just now, I recommend clicking immediately.]

"Rascal, just a moment ago you were saying internet addiction blah blah..."

Ju-won clicked the article.

An unsolved case highlighted by the popular broadcast 'I Want to Know This'.

It is a case where the victim was found dead inside an SUV in an apartment car park.

A security guard on patrol discovered the victim and reported it, but by the time the police arrived, the victim was already dead.

"There were traces of being stabbed with a sharp weapon on the chest and face, and the autopsy result confirmed the cause of death as heart rupture due to the weapon penetrating the sternum and stabbing the heart... it says."

[The fact that traces of being stabbed are only on the chest and face means the perpetrator aimed for the victim's life from the beginning.]

"Because they attacked the heart straight away?"

[Yes, if a grudge was the motive for murder, they would have wielded the weapon here and there, leaving wounds on various parts of the body. Therefore, it is highly likely to be a contract killing with the purpose on the murder itself rather than a grudge.]

Ju-won scrolled down.

"Since the victim isn't someone who would incur enough of a grudge to commission a murder... money could have been the motive."

[I agree. Money can bring about enough desire to commit murder even without incurring a grudge. The learning from a moment ago is effective, I praise you.]

Praise from an artificial intelligence.

Feeling an unknown uneasiness, Ju-won scrolled down again.

Scroll. Scroll.

However, there is no story about the victim's financial situation.

"Committing murder to get money from an elementary school teacher."

[According to National Police Agency statistics, about 5 percent of murder cases in Korea occur for financial reasons.]

Ju-won nodded.

"It makes sense. But the information is too insufficient to specify a suspect. No murder weapon, no witnesses, no culprit DNA, nothing came out."

Insufficient information.

This was a point emphasised by the 'I Want to Know This' side that re-examined the case.

For now, information about the case is too lacking.

So they are receiving tips.

Ju-won tapped the table with his finger.

"It's our jurisdiction, should I look up the case records?"

It was then.

[Robbery case occurred on June 7, 2009, perpetrator Kim Gap-du, victim Jo Yeong-cheon. Do you remember?]

"...What?"

[It is a case appearing on page 79 of the case analysis casebook Mr Ju-won read.]

It's not like there are only one or two robbery cases.

There's no way I'd remember exactly.

Still, as Ju-won jogged his memory, Terra spoke.

[It is a case where a report came into the police substation that a robber with a knife was running around the neighbourhood, and was subsequently transferred to the police station. The initial classification of the case was robbery, but after the perpetrator Kim Gap-du was arrested, drugs were detected in Kim Gap-du's body, and as it was revealed that Kim Gap-du was involved in a past drug case, the case was transferred again to the narcotics team.]

"Kim Gap-du... Ah!"

He seems to remember vaguely.

Two police stations with different jurisdictions chased the same criminal for different charges: robbery with injury and drug charges.

At the time, information was not shared because the jurisdictions were different, and

Eventually, the time to catch the criminal was delayed.

Fortunately, there were no additional victims in the meantime, but it was a case suggesting the shortcomings of jurisdictions.

[The apartment complex where that Kim Gap-du was hiding and the apartment complex where the elementary school teacher was murdered are the same place.]

"What?"

Ju-won scrolled up again.

Case Location: Gangjung City Ma* Apartment

"Gangjung City?"

[Yes, both are cases that occurred in Mr Ju-won's jurisdiction.]

Ju-won fell into thought.

"The only apartment starting with Ma in Gangjung City is Mahyeon Apartment. However, we cannot conclude the two cases are related with just that."

[Correct. It could be a coincidence, but it might not be.]

"If there's even a little suspicion, check it out?"

[The two cases are just one day apart. Kim Gap-du was arrested nearby the day after the elementary school teacher was murdered. The suspicious circumstances are sufficient.]

Ju-won recalled the case analysis book he read.

Kim Gap-du was a perpetrator of robbery with injury.

He is strong, and mainly harms people for money.

Such a Kim Gap-du was at the apartment where the unsolved case victim was murdered.

And the interval between the two cases is one day.

"I definitely need to check it out."

[Wasn't a needle mark found on the victim elementary school teacher's body?]

"You mean the victim could be related to a drug case?"

[Please wait a moment. I will analyse the memories in Mr Ju-won's subconscious.]

A short while later, Terra's voice was heard.

[I think we can specify a suspect.]
