Rowan arrived at the guild just after midday.
The hall was busier than usual. Several new notices had been posted, and small groups gathered around the boards, talking quietly. The air felt active but not chaotic.
Rowan stepped inside without changing his pace.
The warmth beside him reacted faintly.
Awareness.
Rowan noticed it and kept walking.
As he approached the request board, voices nearby softened. Not abruptly. Not deliberately. Just enough to register.
He scanned the notices as usual.
Nothing unusual.
He reached up to take down a simple delivery request when a voice spoke from behind him.
"You always choose the quiet ones."
Rowan turned.
The speaker was a man he had seen several times before. Mid rank adventurer. Calm expression. No hostility in his eyes. Only curiosity.
Rowan considered the statement. "They fit my schedule."
The man smiled slightly. "Most people say that. Few mean it."
Rowan nodded once and returned his attention to the board.
The man did not leave.
"I have heard a few things," he continued. "Nothing dramatic. Just that people feel at ease around you."
Rowan took the notice down and faced him again. "That sounds like a rumor."
"It is," the man agreed. "That is why I am curious."
Rowan did not rush his reply. "Curiosity does not require an answer."
The man laughed softly. "Fair enough."
He stepped back, hands raised slightly. "No offense intended."
"None taken," Rowan replied.
The man lingered for a moment longer, then turned and rejoined his group.
Rowan exhaled quietly.
The warmth beside him shifted.
Concern.
Rowan stepped away from the board and moved toward the counter. He submitted the request without comment and waited.
The receptionist glanced at the paper, then at Rowan.
"People ask about you," she said casually.
Rowan tilted his head. "About what."
"Nothing specific," she replied. "Just what kind of adventurer you are."
Rowan considered that. "I am not sure myself."
She smiled. "That makes sense."
She stamped the request and handed it back. "Be safe."
Rowan accepted it and left the hall.
Outside, the village felt much the same as before. Vendors called out their goods. Footsteps echoed along stone paths. Children darted between adults.
And yet, Rowan felt the shift more clearly now.
Attention.
Not heavy.
Not sharp.
Present.
He walked toward the edge of the square and slowed near the well.
"This will continue," Rowan said quietly.
The warmth responded.
Yes.
Rowan rested his hand against the stone rim of the well. "That is alright."
The presence hesitated.
They will ask more.
Rowan nodded. "Eventually."
The warmth tightened briefly.
Rowan spoke before it could linger. "I will not change how I live to avoid being seen."
The presence steadied.
"But," Rowan continued, "I will not invite attention either."
The warmth relaxed.
Agreement.
Rowan straightened and resumed walking. He passed through the village without urgency. A few people nodded as he went by. A shopkeeper greeted him with a polite smile.
Nothing escalated.
That was important.
Later, Rowan completed his delivery without incident. The task required little interaction and no explanation. When he returned, the guild accepted the report without comment.
As Rowan stepped back outside, the sun hung low in the sky.
"You felt that too," Rowan said softly.
The warmth responded.
Yes.
"They noticed you watching," Rowan added.
The presence hesitated.
I did not mean to.
"I know," Rowan said calmly. "It happens."
They walked together toward his lodging.
"Curiosity does not demand action," Rowan said. "It only demands patience."
The warmth settled.
As they reached the door, Rowan paused.
"I will not hide," he said. "But I will not perform either."
The presence aligned with him.
That is enough.
Inside, Rowan set his satchel down and lit the lamp. The room filled with familiar light and shadow.
He sat at the table and rested his hands on the wood.
"This is the cost of gentleness," Rowan said. "People wonder."
The warmth responded with quiet resolve.
Then we remain steady.
Rowan smiled faintly. "Exactly."
As night fell, the village outside continued as it always had. Conversations faded. Doors closed. The world settled into rest.
Rowan remained calm.
Attention had brushed against him today.
And it had passed without changing who he was.
That was enough.
