Chapter 11 - moon fire unleashed

Rayna POV

The deeper we walked, the colder the air became. The stone steps spiraled underground, into something that looked half-dungeon, half-sacred chamber. Torches flickered along the walls, casting gold against metal shackles and thick support pillars.

My chest tightened.

"This is where new wolves shift for the first time," Rowan said quietly. "It's safer. Stronger walls… fewer chances of hurting yourself."

I swallowed. "Or others."

He didn't deny it.

Instead, he touched my arm gently, steering me forward. "Everything is going to be fine. I'm right beside you through all of it."

A shiver rolled down my spine not fear. Something else. Something pulling tight inside me.

Above us, muffled but unmistakable, a howl carried across the night.

Rowan inhaled sharply.

"…It's starting."

"Yeah," I breathed, gripping my arms. "I can feel it."

The pull.

The burning.

The way my bones felt suddenly too tight inside my skin.

He stepped in front of me, cupping my face with both hands. His touch grounded me instantly.

"Look at me," he whispered. "Just me."

My vision blurred, the torchlight melting into streaks. The heat in my chest throbbed, expanding.

"It's okay," he said, even as my knees buckled. "Rayna breathe."

The pain hit like a wave.

My muscles tightened.

My bones trembled.

A cry clawed out of my throat as I fell to my hands and knees.

"Rowan!" I gasped.

"I'm here." He dropped beside me, one hand on my back, the other gripping my wrist so I wouldn't slam it against the stone. "Let it come. Don't fight it."

But it hurt.

God, it hurt.

My vision went white, then black, then gold.

"I-I can't-!"

"You can," he insisted, voice fierce but steady. "Feel the shift. Don't fear it."

A growl tore out of me, too deep, too animal. My spine bent unnaturally. Bones cracked, reshaped. My claws split through my fingers. Fur crawled up my skin like fire.

I screamed

And then I wasn't screaming.

I was growling.

My wolf burst through, powerful and shaking, collapsing onto all fours. My vision sharpened into gold. The air tasted metallic and warm. Every sound echoed like thunder.

Rowan didn't flinch.

He knelt in front of me, slowly reaching out.

"You're okay," he murmured. "You're beautiful."

My wolf chuffed an involuntary sound, embarrassed and soothed all at once.

"Easy," he whispered. "You're still you. Just… more."

Something snapped between us.

A bond.

A pull.

A glowing thread of heat that made my wolf step closer without meaning to.

Rowan held out his hand.

"Come here, Rayna."

I obeyed.

My wolf pressed her head into his chest, trembling. He wrapped his arms around her neck, burying his fingers in my fur, grounding me anchoring me.

"I've got you," he whispered. "You're safe. You're mine."

The words lit something inside me so bright it almost hurt.

But not in a painful way.

A claiming.

A recognition.

A soul answering another.

I nuzzled into him harder, wanting him closer, wanting him everywhere.

He laughed under his breath, shaking slightly. "God… the bond is strong with you."

I licked his jaw.

He froze.

"Rayna…" His voice dropped, rough. "If you keep doing that"

My wolf growled softly.

Playful.

Possessive.

He pressed his forehead to mine.

"You feel it too, don't you?"

The warmth.

The pull.

The desire.

Stronger than any shifted pain.

I huffed a breath against his neck in answer.

His fingers tightened in my fur. "Good. Because when you shift back…"

He swallowed, breath shaky.

"We're talking about this."

I nudged him again.

"No running," he said softly. "Not from me."

The shift's aftermath dulled, exhaustion washing through me like a heavy tide. I curled beside him, my wolf's body pressed to his legs. Rowan stroked my fur until my breathing slowed, until the pain vanished, until the bond pulsed quiet and warm between us.

I drifted off like that

wrapped in the scent of my mate,

in the quiet of the underground chamber,

in the heat of a bond I was no longer fighting.

And Rowan stayed awake the entire night, guarding me.
