Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5: The Sepulcher of the Fallen Star.

The chamber reeked of purification and pain. Lin Feng sat amidst the evidence of his rebirth—the blackened sludge, the spatters of blood, the shattered porcelain from his mother's tray.

His body hummed with a new, clean energy, cycling smoothly through meridians that had been tombs moments before. Qi Refining, Third Stage. A laughable level in the grand cosmos of cultivation, but here, in this body, it was a miracle.

His father, Lin Dayong, stood over his unconscious wife, a tumult of emotions warring on his stern face—shock, fury at the discovered poison, awe at his son's brutal method, and dread for the marital typhoon about to awaken.

"Feng'er…" Lin Dayong began, his voice uncharacteristically thick.

"It was poison, Father," Lin Feng cut in, his voice low but clear despite his exhaustion. "Administered to Mother before I was born. Meridian-Sealing Miasma. This was not my failure. It was sabotage."

The air in the room seemed to freeze. Lin Dayong's eyes, usually like polished steel, went utterly dark. The temperature plummeted. A Saint Realm expert's killing intent, tightly leashed, made the oil lamps gutter.

"Who?" The word was a blade being unsheathed.

"I don't know. Yet," Lin Feng met his father's gaze. "But they wanted the Lin heir to be a cripple. They wanted you weakened, distracted, your lineage a joke. They succeeded for sixteen years."

He pushed himself up, wincing. The Marrow-Cleansing Pill was still working, knitting micro-fractures from the beating.

"Father, what I need now is not vengeance. It is time. And secrecy."

"Secrecy?" Lin Dayong's brow furrowed. "You have just performed a miracle! We should announce—"

"No." Lin Feng's tone was final, brooking no argument. It was the voice of the former Purple Heaven Sect disciple, used to command. "Announce what? That the family's greatest disgrace is now merely average? That would make me a slightly harder target, not a safer one. The poisoner is still here, in the family, or has allies here. They see me as a finished piece—a broken tool. Let them keep thinking that."

Understanding dawned in Lin Dayong's eyes, mixed with a profound sadness.

"You wish to be a hidden blade."

"I wish to not be a blade at all in their eyes. I wish to be forgotten." Lin Feng looked towards the window, where the first hints of dawn were bleeding into the sky. "I need to go into seclusion. Officially, I am recuperating from my beating and the 'trauma' of my near-death experience. I am frail, melancholic, and wish to see no one. You must sell this, Father. To Mother, to the servants, to the elders."

"Your mother…"

"Will you make her act?" Lin Feng asked. "Her grief and anger at you for 'beating' me will be real. Let it be real. Let it sell the story. No one can know I am healed. Not yet."

Lin Dayong was a strategist of battlefields and courts. He saw the brutal elegance of the plan. By hiding his son's recovery, he protected him from immediate reprisal and elevated scrutiny. It gave Lin Feng time to grow in the shadows. He nodded slowly, a general accepting a risky but potent tactic.

"For how long?"

"The Coming of Age Ceremony is in three months. I will emerge then." A faint, cold smile touched Lin Feng's lips.

"Let Elder Lin Hai pour all his resources into Lin Cheng. Let them all prepare their plays for the useless young master. I will need things, Father. Not just pills, but information. Maps of the back hills, the old family archives on basic cultivation techniques—the ones no one reads anymore. A discreet way to dispose of… this." He gestured again at the filth.

"It will be done." Lin Dayong's voice was firm now, the Duke of the North reasserting himself. "This chamber will be sealed. I will say the stench of your illness is too great, and you are too ashamed to be seen. Only I will enter."

The following morning, Madam Su Xinya awoke on the couch in her son's antechamber. Memory returned in a painful flood. She rushed to the bed, where Lin Feng lay, cleaned of the worst filth but heavily bandaged, his face pale and turned to the wall.

"Feng'er? My son, can you hear me?" Her voice was a fragile thread.

Lin Feng remained still for a long moment, then slowly turned his head. He let his eyes, the eyes of a reborn soul, appear hollow and fractured. He did not look at her, but through her.

"So cold," he whispered, his voice raspy and distant. "It's so dark here."

A sob broke from Su Xinya's throat. She gathered his limp hand in both of hers, her tears falling on the bandages.

"My boy, my precious boy… what did he do to you? I'm here. Mother is here. The darkness will pass, I promise."

She stayed for hours, whispering stories of his childhood, of the first time he'd seen snow, of the little wooden sword he'd cherished. Lin Feng lay still, each word a needle of guilt in his heart. This love was the most potent poison and the most vital medicine. He endured it, for the charade.

Rumors, fertilized by the Duchess's public grief and the Duke's grim silence, flew through the Lin Estate like crows.

In a sunlit courtyard, two maids, emboldened by the perceived fall of the young master, spoke freely while polishing railings.

"Have you seen him? I took broth in yesterday. He just stares at the ceiling. Doesn't even blink properly."

"I heard from Lin Chu that he soiled himself and didn't even notice. Just lay in it. The Duke had to clean him up like a newborn babe."

A third maid joined, her voice a conspiratorial whisper. "Worse than a newborn. At least a babe has a future. What does he have? He was trash before, but at least he was lively trash, throwing tantrums and breaking things. Now? He's just a breathing corpse. A burden that stinks up the west wing."

The first maid shook her head with false pity. "Such a handsome face, wasted. The Duchess's heart must be in shreds. And the Duke… to be brought so low by his own son."

"Not a son," the second maid said, her tone dropping all pretense. "An anchor. He's dragging the entire direct lineage down to the depths. Young Master Cheng would never shame the family so. He's the future, whether the Duke admits it or not. This one… he's just a ghost waiting to be buried."

Their laughter was soft, cruel, and carried on the wind.

Within the sealed chamber, Lin Feng's real work began. His father provided everything. Pills were hidden inside bland meals.

Scrolls on the Lin Family Basic Qi Circulation Art and Foundation Establishment Primer appeared under his mattress. They were laughably simplistic to his eyes, which held the celestial mysteries of the Purple Heaven Sutra, but he studied them meticulously.

His daily routine was monastic in its rigor, his cultivation solidifying at the peak of the 5th Stage of Qi Refining.

Yet, a critical lack gnawed at him. To truly progress in alchemy and forge his own path, he needed a flame. Not just any flame, but a spiritual beast's innate fire, something he could potentially subdue and utilize.

One night, during his father's visit, he spoke.

"Father. I need to leave the estate."

Lin Dayong paused. "The ceremony is in four weeks. Is it time?"

"Not to emerge. To hunt," Lin Feng said, his eyes gleaming in the lamplight. "I need a flame for alchemy. I have nothing here. I must go to the Grimwood Forest, to the north. I need to find a beast with a strong fire attribute."

"The Grimwood? That is a cold, dead place. The beasts there are vicious, and the terrain is treacherous. It's a graveyard for overconfident hunters."

"Precisely. No one will look for me there. And a cold forest is the perfect place to find a creature whose inner flame burns hot enough to survive it. I need the chaos of a hunt, the raw materials. I will say I am going to the forest's edge to… seek a quiet place to end my misery. A final, melancholic pilgrimage."

Lin Dayong stared at his son, this stranger of steel and strategy.

"I will send Lin Chu and Lin Nan. They will shadow you from a distance. They will not interfere unless your life is truly in mortal peril. They are loyal and discreet."

"Thank you, Father."

"What is your goal, Feng'er? For the ceremony."

Lin Feng looked down at his hands, now calloused from secret practice. "To be overlooked. To be pitied. To be deemed utterly irrelevant." He looked up. "And to get close enough to my dear cousin Lin Cheng to see the shock in his eyes when his world eventually falls apart. But first, I need a flame."

The next morning, Lin Feng staged his departure. He shuffled from the west wing, wrapped in a plain grey cloak, his steps slow and unsteady, his face a mask of vacant despair. He took the main path leading to the northern gate.

Fate, or perhaps arrogance, arranged a meeting at the central plaza.

Lin Cheng, surrounded by a coterie of branch family youths, was returning from a training session. He radiated health and burgeoning power, having just broken into the 7th Stage of Qi Refining. His eyes, sharp and condescending, landed on his shuffling cousin.

The group fell silent. Lin Cheng didn't speak. He simply stopped, allowing his presence to become a wall. He looked Lin Feng up and down, his gaze lingering on the hunched shoulders, the downcast eyes. A smile, thin and devoid of any warmth, touched his lips. It was not a smile of greeting, but of final, dismissive assessment.

He gave a slight, almost imperceptible shake of his head, a silent verdict of 'worthless,' and then walked on, his followers snickering as they brushed past. No words were needed. The scorn was absolute, and it was perfect.

Lin Feng continued his shambling walk, the hollow expression on his face never wavering. Only deep within, behind the performance, was there a flicker of cold satisfaction.

Once beyond the gate and into the sparse foothills leading to the Grimwood, his posture subtly changed. The shuffle became a purposeful, ground-eating stride. The vacancy in his eyes sharpened into focused alertness. He could sense Lin Chu and Lin Nan, shadows among shadows, following at a respectful distance.

The air grew colder, the greenery fading to grey rock and skeletal, iron-hard trees. The Grimwood lived up to its name—a silent, chilling expanse where the wind sounded like whispers.

After half a day's journey into its depths, following an old, faded map his father had provided, he found it.

Carved into the base of a gargantuan, frost-rimed cliff was a cavern entrance. It was not a natural formation; the archway was too regular, though now cracked and choked with ice. Above it, worn almost smooth by time and weather, were ancient, imposing characters carved deep into the stone:

The Sepulcher of the Fallen Star.

This was no mere cave. This was a tomb for something, or someone, of immense consequence. A place of forgotten power and likely, forgotten danger. The perfect place to seek a flame that could burn in such cold.

Lin Feng stood before the dark maw, the chill wind whipping his cloak. Somewhere in the depths of this sepulcher, he would find what he needed, or it would become his grave. He took a final breath of the frigid air, felt the hidden strength in his limbs, and stepped into the darkness.
