Morning arrived quietly over Ridgebrook.
Leonidas stood at the edge of the training yard, watching mist slowly lift from the ground. The dirt still carried marks from the previous day—scuffed earth, shallow lines where boots had turned and blades had met.
Alexander.
Leonidas released a slow breath.
He had faced many warriors in his life. Brave men. Strong men. Skilled men. But Alexander was different. Not because of strength—Leonidas had deliberately suppressed his qi—but because of how fast the young man adjusted.
Alexander didn't just learn.
He understood.
Mid-fight, he had changed rhythm the moment Leonidas adapted. That kind of instinct wasn't taught. It was shaped. Or it burned everything around it.
Leonidas turned away, decision already made.
This talent would not be wasted.
Khalid heard about the duel from a soldier who could barely contain himself.
"They said Leonidas stepped back," the man said carefully. "Just half a step, but still."
Khalid didn't answer right away.
He had seen many stories grow larger than the truth. But the soldier wasn't exaggerating. His tone carried respect, not excitement.
Later that morning, Khalid observed Alexander from afar.
The man was young. Lean. Calm. He stood with quiet confidence, like someone who expected challenges rather than feared them.
Khalid smiled faintly.
"So," he muttered, "you pushed a king."
He approached openly.
"Alexander," Khalid said. "Fight me."
Alexander turned, studying him. "Same rank?"
"Same rank," Khalid replied. "No killing intent."
Alexander nodded. "Good."
The training yard cleared quickly. Soldiers gathered at a distance, sensing something important. Leonidas watched from the side. Sun Tzu stood farther back, silent.
Both men suppressed their qi.
The pressure in the air faded.
They moved.
Khalid began slowly, testing distance. His style was patient and steady, built for long battles in harsh lands. He applied pressure without rushing, guiding the fight where he wanted it.
Alexander responded with sharp movement. He shifted angles often, attacking suddenly, refusing to give Khalid a stable rhythm.
Steel clashed.
Khalid pressed forward, forcing Alexander toward the edge of the yard. He feinted high, then low, repeating the pattern.
Alexander caught it quickly.
On the next exchange, Alexander stepped in before the feint finished. Khalid barely moved aside.
Fast, Khalid thought. Too fast for someone this new.
They closed in, fighting at close range. Khalid used his weight and control, trying to turn the duel into a test of endurance.
Alexander adapted again.
Instead of resisting the pressure, he moved with it.
He turned Khalid's force into momentum, twisting his body and striking from an angle Khalid didn't expect. Khalid recovered quickly, swinging wide to regain space.
They separated, breathing harder now.
Then they clashed again—faster, sharper. Different battles shaped their instincts, but both had learned to survive.
In the final exchange, both struck at once.
Alexander's blade hovered near Khalid's shoulder.
Khalid's rested close to Alexander's ribs.
They froze.
Then both stepped back.
A draw.
Khalid lowered his weapon with a quiet laugh. "You learn faster than any man I've fought."
Alexander smiled, chest rising and falling. "And you endure longer than most."
Respect settled between them, solid and unspoken.
Nearby, Vlad watched with clear disappointment.
"No blood," he muttered. "Very polite."
Rasputin stood beside him, arms crossed. "Polite keeps soldiers alive. Alive soldiers spread stories."
Vlad snorted. "Fear spreads faster."
"Fear burns out," Rasputin replied. "Belief lasts."
Vlad glanced at him. "I build belief with spikes."
"And I build loyalty by keeping people breathing," Rasputin shot back.
A soldier walking past suddenly found the ground very interesting.
Vlad chuckled, watching Alexander. "That boy would make a fine terror."
Rasputin shook his head. "He'd make a better symbol. People follow symbols."
Vlad considered it, then laughed. "You're annoying."
"And right," Rasputin said.
"For now," Vlad agreed.
Sun Tzu gathered the commanders later.
"Duels are tools," he said calmly. "Not contests of pride."
He laid out roles clearly.
Leonidas would handle discipline and formation.
Khalid would train endurance and battlefield flow.
Alexander would focus on initiative and quick decisions under pressure.
"No overlap," Sun Tzu warned. "Confusion kills faster than blades."
Alexander listened carefully. He didn't argue.
For the first time since arriving, he understood where he stood.
Beyond the walls, Lapu-Lapu studied the forest.
Movement had increased. Not rushing. Not retreating.
Gathering.
Whatever watched Ridgebrook was no longer satisfied with observing.
That night, Liam stood atop the half-built wall, looking over the village.
Two duels. One day. Talent revealed. Limits drawn.
Strength alone wouldn't save them.
But strength guided properly?
That just might
Liam pushed open the door to his room quietly, exhaustion heavy in his bones. The lamp inside was dim, casting soft light across the space—and then he stopped.
Lira and Orin were already there
They lay on the bed as if they belonged there, loose hair spread over pillows, dressed in thin sleeping clothes meant for comfort but doing little to hide their shapes. Lira stirred first, eyes half-open, lips curving when she saw him.
"Took you long enough," she whispered.
Orin sat up slowly, cheeks warm but eyes steady. She didn't speak, only watched him with an intensity that made Liam's breath hitch.
"You're hurt," Lira said softly, reaching out to touch his arm. Not probing. Just grounding.
"I'm fine," Liam replied, though his voice betrayed how tired he was.
Orin shifted closer. "You don't have to be strong tonight."
The words broke something he hadn't realized he was holding together.
The door closed behind him.
What followed was quiet, unhurried, and human. No battles. No ranks. No walls to defend. Only warmth, shared breaths, and the simple comfort of not being alone.
Outside, Ridgebrook slept.
Inside, for once, Liam did too.
