The three mortal hunters stepped further into the clearing, their heavy crossbows lowered but far from relaxed. The two hounds flanking them—massive, scarred beasts bred for taking down boars—were acting incredibly strange. Instead of barking or straining at their leashes, they were pressed low to the damp earth, whining pitifully, the fur on their spines standing straight up.
Animals always knew when they were in the presence of apex predators. And currently, the two most dangerous predators in the history of the cosmos were standing directly behind Elara.
