Arlene's POV
My entire body aches like I've been hit by a truck. Hunger gnaws at my stomach while my mouth feels parched and gritty. Absolutely disgusting. I push myself upright and scan my surroundings, discovering I'm positioned beneath the house. Not exactly outdoors, but close enough. Dawn breaks through the dark fabric draped around this makeshift sanctuary. Pillows and blankets create the most incredible hideaway imaginable. An unexpected tranquility settles through my bones. That persistent humming sensation I've experienced since my first shift has finally disappeared.
"Sleep more, Sweetheart." Warner's arm circles my waist, drawing me against his warmth. "You need the rest." A soft laugh escapes me as I crane my neck to study his face.
His eyes flutter open immediately, gifting me with that devastating smile. "Hello," he murmurs with tender affection. "How do you feel?"
