Chapter 59 - I'M HERE

CHAPTER 59

The sound of shuffling papers echoed in the silent boardroom.

Kate stood alone at the window of her office, staring out at the gray skyline, her arms folded tightly across her chest. The report in her hands trembled slightly, though her grip was firm. Her lips were pressed into a thin line, her breathing shallow.

The paper didn't lie.

The newly developed flagship software—code-named Project Nova—had been secretly shipped to a tech distributor in China. Under a different label. Without her signature. Without authorization.

The implications were massive. Not just legally—but morally.

The company her father built from the ground up had almost been sunk overnight.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Ma'am," Joyce said gently, stepping into the office, "they're waiting in the boardroom."

Kate turned, her face composed despite the storm inside her.

"Tell them I'll be right there."

---

The boardroom was icy.

Kate walked in, and the tension shifted immediately. She met the eyes of each director—some grim, others visibly disappointed.

"Miss Dray," one of them began, "how could this happen under your leadership?"

"I discovered the breach two days ago," she replied calmly, "and I've already taken steps to—"

"Two days ago?" another board member interrupted. "Do you understand the damage this could have caused?"

"Your father would never have allowed this," said an older woman, shaking her head. "He built this company on principles. This—this is shameful."

Kate flinched, the words cutting deeper than she'd expected. She forced a steady breath.

"I'll fix this," she said, her voice low but firm. "You have my word."

The board stared at her, silent.

One of them leaned forward. "Fix this before we're forced to intervene."

---

That night, Kate didn't sleep.

While the rest of the world wound down, she buried herself in files, legal documents, forensic audits, and transactional trails.

She didn't tell William. Not one word.

They had just started rebuilding something fragile between them, and she wouldn't jeopardize that now—not with more burdens. He didn't need to know. She had to handle this on her own.

---

Three days passed.

Then five.

Then seven.

Kate showed up early, left late, barely ate, and smiled whenever anyone looked her way.

Joyce watched, increasingly anxious.

"You haven't taken a break in a week," Joyce said, following Kate into her office. "You're not just the CEO anymore, Kate. You're carrying a life."

Kate offered her a tired smile. "I'm fine. I have to do this. For them… and for me."

That afternoon, Joyce found Kate leaning against her desk, her hand on her back, a shadow under her eyes.

"Please," Joyce begged, "Tell William. Let him help you."

Kate looked up slowly. Her voice cracked slightly. "I don't want him to see me as a burden."

Joyce's eyes softened. "He won't. But if you collapse—what then?"

"I won't," Kate whispered.

---

Seven Days Later

She did it.

Kate stood before the board, pale but composed. She'd traced the fraud to two department heads, cut all external partnerships tied to the illicit deal, and secured legal rights to reclaim the misused property. Her relentless efforts had prevented financial ruin.

"You've exceeded expectations," one of the directors said, stunned.

"We didn't think anyone could clean up this mess so fast," another admitted.

Kate nodded stiffly. "It's handled."

No one knew the toll it had taken. And she didn't care. She had done it—proved herself worthy of the Dray name.

---

It was dusk when she stepped into the parking lot, files tucked under her arm. The sun bled into the horizon, casting golden streaks over the pavement.

Her vision blurred.

The wind grew louder in her ears.

She staggered, clutching her stomach.

Her legs buckled.

Then everything went black.

---

SIRENS.

The ambulance tore through the streets, lights blazing.

Inside, Kate lay pale on the stretcher, her hand limp, her pulse slow but steady.

---

Greenville Hospital – 8:13PM

Joyce's voice trembled as she spoke into her phone.

"William… It's Kate. She collapsed outside the company. They said she's at Greenville. You need to come—now."

The line went silent.

Then William's voice, low and deadly: "I'm on my way."

William stood outside his penthouse, phone still in his hand, Joyce's voice echoing in his mind.

Collapsed. Hospital. Pregnant.

He didn't wait for his driver.

He was behind the wheel in seconds.

He sped through traffic, fury and panic clawing at his chest.

By the time he arrived at the company headquarters, his blood was boiling.

---

Company Headquarters – Conference Room

The Heads of Department were in mid-discussion when the door slammed open.

William walked in like a storm.

Everyone fell silent.

He didn't waste time.

"You knew what she was going through," he growled. "And you let her work herself to the ground?"

No one moved.

"You cared more about your quarterly reports than the life of a woman carrying a child!" he roared.

The room shrank under his voice.

"I swear—if anything happens to her or my baby—every last one of you will answer to me."

Then, without another word, he turned and left.

---

Greenville Hospital – Private Ward

The room was white. Too white. Too quiet.

William stood at the doorway for a long moment, staring at her.

Kate lay unconscious, her face pale, lips slightly parted. An IV drip hung beside her. A monitor beeped steadily.

He walked slowly to her side.

He took her hand—cold, soft, still.

His throat tightened.

She looked so small.

So fragile.

He sat beside her and whispered, "Why didn't you tell me?"

His thumb stroked her hand.

"You could've died," he said, voice low. "And I wouldn't have even known what killed you."

He swallowed.

Was it love? Or guilt?

He didn't know.

All he knew was… he couldn't breathe without her.

He bowed his head, pressing it against her hand.

"Please don't leave me," he whispered, his voice breaking. "Not you. Not the baby."

A nurse walked past the door—and paused.

She stood frozen, shocked by what she saw.

William Dray—the man known for his icy silence, the ruthless billionaire—was weeping quietly beside his wife's hospital bed.

---

Moments Later

The door opened gently. Dr. Raymond stepped in, clipboard in hand.

"She'll be okay," he said softly.

William looked up, eyes rimmed red.

"She just overworked herself. No physical trauma. Just extreme fatigue, dehydration, and emotional stress."

William nodded slowly.

"She's due in two months," Dr. Raymond added. "The baby's healthy. But she needs rest. She needs care."

"I'll handle it," William murmured.

The doctor gave a warm smile. "She can go home when she wakes up. Just… don't let her carry the weight alone anymore."

William didn't answer.

He just turned back to her.

---

Minutes Passed. Maybe Hours.

The hospital lights dimmed outside the window.

William never left the room.

He sat by her side, still holding her hand.

He leaned closer and whispered, "You don't have to fight alone anymore, Kate. I'm here."

His voice shook—just slightly.

"I mean it this time."

He kissed her fingers.

Not for the cameras. Not for anyone watching.

Just her.

And in that quiet room, something shifted.

Not in the world. But in William's heart.

The armor cracked.

Love slipped through.

And for the first time in his life… he welcomed it.
