Chapter 1 - *1*

★RAINE★

I sat at the farthest table in the restaurant as I tapped my perfectly french-tipped nails on the table, waiting for Elliot, my boyfriend. I unlocked my phone and clicked on the Instagram app and went to my account. It had very few followers, a count of fifty thousand. There was no post though, I'm sure the followers came from Hailey's post, she usually tagged me whenever we took pictures and she uploaded it. Sighing, I looked at the time at the head of my Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. Nine thirty pm.

I was born and bred in money. I never lacked since I was a baby up to my twenties, yet it seemed like Horizon Media was out there to make mine and my dad's life miserable. It's crazy how few minutes could change one's life drastically. I exited my account page and clicked to view other women's posts. They were beautiful, all so beautiful and didn't battle with validation. Or fear of failure. Or low self esteem. I was all those in one.

I heard a squeal from the entrance of the five-star restaurant and raised my head, there stood my boyfriend. Smiling and waving at his fans. I smiled. He was a famous model for his uncle's fashion company. He had the body and face and whatever else there was to have. I wondered how he fell for a twenty three year old woman who battled with low self esteem when he could get whichever woman he wanted. Maybe he really loved me the way I did him. We've been dating for two years now.

"Raine." Elliot said as he approached me. I rose up to leave a quick kiss on his lips but he sat down before I could even reach him. Thinning my lips, I awkwardly sat back down.

"Uh... You're late." I told him with a small chuckle but he didn't even smile.

"You look good." He shrugged, picking up his phone to scan the menu.

"Good... Just good?" I'd done my best to dress up like a doll for him. In a tight fitting evening purple dress and black stilettos only to hear just good?

"Yeah." He shrugged, "What do you want to eat?"

I hesitated, thinking he'd pass me his phone since he'd saved both of us the stress of both scanning the menu. Seeing as he didn't, I picked up my own phone and scanned the menu, going over the list. "I've made up my mind, are we ready to order?"

He nodded and made a show of pressing the small circle button attached to the sleek round table, a few seconds later, a female waiter arrived. "Foie Gras with Truffle." Elliot said and the waitress looked at me. "Tartare of Wagyu beef, please." I said. Elliot added some desserts before dismissing the waitress.

I sat looking around the German restaurant before my gaze landed on Elliot. He was busy in his cell and not me, "Elliot?" I called and he looked up with raised brows. "Are you alright? I mean you're strangely not speaking to me. Is anything up?" I asked, fidgeting with my nails under the table so he wouldn't see how he affected me.

"Yeah, something is up Raine but I'll tell you after dinner." He said and continued with his cell.

Raine? He never called me Raine. We've been dating for two years now but I hardly heard my name from his mouth, I thought he might as well have forgotten my name and only remembered using endearments.

The waitress returned with two other waitresses as they set our table. Raising my hand and Elliot dropping his cell, we commenced dinner. My eyes slanted to his phone which was still switched on and the interface looked like a chat with someone. I didn't manage to get his or her name as his voice jolted me;

"So how's your father doing?" Elliot asked, picking a morsel of truffle and putting it in his mouth.

"He's doing good." I shrugged, "You know, the thing with our media and all. It's hard on him but he's trying." I answered, biting the inside of my cheeks. I hated talking about it. I hated the memory of how our Mitchell Media Company had crumbled down because of a rival company. "Creditors are at our neck." I added and watched through my wine as he nodded.

"Must be hard on you, and your father. I hope you're doing well?" He asked and I slowly nodded. "Right you should, which brings us to our main conversation." I paused at his words and looked up at him. He wasn't finished with his food but he had dropped his cutleries. "Let's break up, Raine."

My world screeched to a halt. My breath hitched. My heart thumped and my eyes watered as confusion marred my face. "Break up? What are you talking about?"

He didn't even seem bothered, he rested back on the chair, looking at me with his grey eyes. "I want to break up. I can't handle being with you anymore." He shook his head. His words stunned me. Was he breaking up with me because of my father's condition?

I took in a deep breath and reached out to place my hand on his which rested on the table, "Please, Elliot. You can't do this. You can't... You can't leave me, not now." I shook my head as a single tear slid from my right eye. I didn't bother wiping it.

"Aren't you ashamed of yourself, Raine? If I were you, I would be very much ashamed of my condition. I can't be seen with you, I'm a popular figure!" He sneered, "You want my image to be ruined because I'm dating some girl who's father's business is ruined? It doesn't help with my image, love." He said and I gasped inaudibly.

I didn't believe my sweet, kind and caring Elliot could be as mean and harsh as he sounded now. "You... Didn't you love me...? Don't you love me?"

"Love you...? Raine be real," He leaned in, "This is not your romance story okay? We're over and that's it. I don't want you around me ever again." And with that, he stood up and left, not giving a single fuck about my own feelings.
