Chapter 98 - War of Faith: Part 28

The earth split open beneath Hiroto's hand.

Not violently.

Deliberately.

Black stone rose in curved layers, forming a platform beneath his feet. The scar pulsed like a living heart, and the shadow around his body changed shape no longer wild, no longer armor.

It became structure.

Lines of dark light traced across his arms and chest, forming symbols that did not belong to scripture or sky.

The Executioners paused.

For the first time…

They hesitated.

Hiroto stood slowly.

"…So this is what you were hiding," he whispered to the land.

Akari felt it.

This wasn't power stolen from belief.

It wasn't prayer.

It was inheritance.

The nearest Executioner lunged.

Hiroto did not dodge.

He raised his hand.

The ground answered.

A spike of black stone erupted upward and pierced straight through the Executioner's chest.

Its crystal armor shattered.

Light leaked out like smoke.

The body froze then collapsed into dust.

Silence fell.

Yui stared.

"…You killed it."

The Watcher's voice shook.

"No mortal has ever fully destroyed an Executioner."

The remaining Executioners reacted instantly.

They surrounded Hiroto in a circle of light.

Akari raised her spear.

"All units, pull back while you can!"

The Executioners attacked together.

Hiroto slammed his foot down.

The platform beneath him expanded into a ring of jagged black stone.

Beams of light struck it and bent away.

Not blocked.

Redirected.

His shadow surged outward and wrapped around one Executioner's legs, dragging it into the earth.

Another fired at point-blank range.

Hiroto crossed his arms.

The beam split.

He was thrown backward but still standing.

Blood ran down his face.

His breathing was uneven.

"…Still… incomplete."

Akari grabbed his shoulder.

"That's enough! You've proven we can kill them!"

Hiroto looked at the sky.

"…And they've proven they won't stop."

Above them, the clouds twisted.

A larger shape formed within the light.

Not descending yet.

Watching.

The Watcher's voice dropped.

"That is a Commander-class Executioner."

Yui's hands trembled.

"…So this was just the first layer?"

Hiroto clenched his fist.

The symbols on his body flickered.

"…Then this power is still in its first step."

Akari turned to her army.

"Fall back to the inner sanctum!

Carry the wounded first!"

Explosions of light tore through the battlefield as the remaining Executioners advanced.

Hiroto stepped forward one last time.

"I'll hold them."

Akari shook her head.

"You'll die."

"Not today."

He struck the ground.

A wall of black stone surged upward between the army and the Executioners.

Light smashed into it again and again.

Cracks spread.

But it held.

Akari pulled Yui with her as soldiers retreated.

The Watcher lingered.

"You have awakened something dangerous," he told Hiroto.

Hiroto didn't look back.

"…So have they."

High above, the massive shape in the clouds shifted.

A voice echoed faintly, layered and cold:

"Subject: Shadow-Bearer."

"Threat level: ascending."

"Authorization: Commander deployment."

The clouds began to open.

Hiroto felt it.

Not pressure.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"…They've noticed me."

The wall behind him began to crumble.

Hiroto turned toward the light.

Shadow gathered around his fists.

"Then come closer."

To be continued…
