Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Heh Heh Heh—So There’s Plot in the Dungeon Too?

What is a "wheelchair build"?

Is it absurd, broken damage—so overpowered that whoever dares challenge you gets one-shot and sent packing in disgrace?

Or is it the reign of sheer weight—an immovable mountain that can stare down collapsing heavens, gods, and dragons alike and still laugh, "Too weak. Eat yet?"

Or is it the kind that gives up interaction entirely—ignoring everything, pure of mind and free of malice, saying nothing and only mindlessly repeating the same thing over and over?

If you asked Evan, the answer was: all of the above.

He wanted an unstoppable spear, an unbreakable shield—and controls so simple even his grandma could play it.

Only then could it be called a "wheelchair build."

Of course, obtaining power so utterly against common sense wasn't easy.

You needed eyes that could spot bugs (exploits). You needed a sharp mind for stacking and calculating stats. You needed keen instincts to see what the current "meta" was pushing. And you needed a powerful memory to instantly retrieve every relevant piece of gear, item, and skill…

Then you had to keep combining, choosing, testing, and validating it in real combat—

"'Wheelchair' is just the result. But who understands the sweat and work that goes into the process?!"

And right here, right now—

What Evan had obtained was one small piece of a future "wheelchair" puzzle.

Combat Art: Glimmer Echo

Activates immediately; replicates all combat arts used within the next one second.

(A technique mastered by the Goblin clan's Glimmer Knights—only those with extraordinary talent can learn it. It creates an imperceptible afterimage that repeats the user's movements. Legend says this power was brought by saintesses from beyond the clan—existing only to protect. There is no light in the Dungeon; chasing an unreachable glimmer, the knights sometimes glimpse a dream they can never touch.)

Holding the exquisitely crafted, slender, ornate short staff in his hand, Evan used his magic [Perfect Mastery] and quickly read out the combat art information attached to the weapon.

Then, experimentally, he drew the katana at his waist—"Flashlight."

Staff in his left hand, blade in his right, he first used [Glimmer Echo], then immediately followed with his katana's combat art—[Round Moon Slash].

Shff!

The long blade swept upward, cold light carving a chilling crescent moon.

Immediately after—

A faint-glimmer katana manifested out of thin air, repeating the exact motion. As Evan sheathed his blade, the phantom struck again.

Twin Moons!

The moonlight flashed and vanished once more—like dazzling fireworks erupting one after another in the late night.

Lefiya and Anya saw it even more clearly.

In that instant, beside Evan appeared a shadow made of countless tiny motes of light—an afterimage that mirrored his movement and delivered that second slash.

Not bad.

Evan was pretty satisfied.

Next, he took out the other thing they'd pulled from the mimic that had been chewing on Anya for so long.

It was an irregular, cracked stone fragment, pale in color, covered in dense, twisted writing—yet not in any language of this world.

It didn't look like ore used for forging weapons or equipment.

Evan thought for a moment, then used another spell of his: [Fragmented Narrative].

This spell was completely useless in combat. It only read an item's description—often meaningless. Like, fried potato balls were—

[Food made by frying potatoes in oil. Quite delicious; restores stamina.]

Or the front door at home was—

[An ordinary wooden door. Can be opened from both sides. Due to its age, it has begun to mold.]

That sort of thing. Most of the time, it was good for nothing.

But this time—

[Saintess's Sigil · III: The kingdom's pallor is not light, but something equal to darkness. Thus, saintesses from beyond the clan always pursue something dazzling. The goblins believe this to be a curse.]

Heh heh heh—so it really was a quest item?

There's actually story content in here?

Combining this with the earlier combat art description, Evan couldn't help but feel a bit respectful.

The Dungeon was way too professional. It didn't just spawn special monsters and "bosses"—it even built out a whole system of lore and props to go with it?

After resting for a while—drinking water, eating, and downing a couple stamina-restoring potions—

Anya stared gloomily at the holes the mimic had bitten into her clothes. Going back like this, she was definitely going to get scolded by Syr. Syr had sewn these clothes for her, meow… woo woo woo.

But the dumb cat's despair didn't affect the exploration.

Evan led the two girls as they continued wandering around Floor 2. He soon realized that most of the special monsters spawning here were goblin knights riding kobolds.

Some didn't have mounts and moved on foot, but they were still far stronger than the goblin soldiers back in those Floor 3 camps.

That said, their numbers were indeed small—usually only three or four at once, and plenty of lone stragglers.

Compared to monsters—

What kept showing up more often were the huge boulders rolling in from the tunnels ahead.

Evan quickly realized the boulders were herding them—just like when they first arrived on this floor and were chased all the way toward the fog gate on Floor 3.

He saw through everything instantly!

Everyone knew: the more the enemy wants you to go somewhere, the more you shouldn't go! And the more they don't want you to go somewhere, the more likely there's treasure buried there!!

So!

By observing the boulders' routes and timing, Evan quickly discovered this was actually a puzzle.

By weaving through the intersecting tunnels—using them to shield one another, exploiting the timing gaps between boulders—you could reach depths that were otherwise inaccessible.

It wasn't even a complicated puzzle. After enough attempts, anyone could pass easily.

However, Evan refused!

Because he hated puzzles!!

A Soulslike should be about fighting properly—get that brain-melting puzzle crap the hell out of here!!

So, deciding to make full use of the power they had right now, Evan didn't dodge the incoming boulder at all. He simply said to the cat-girl beside him:

"Anya. You can smash rocks like this, right?"

"Yeah, meow."

Not a lie.

With the divine strength of a Level 4 adventurer—and Anya being a spear-fighter built around strength and agility—shattering a boulder was easy, meow.

Only then did she remember: she didn't need to fear big rocks like this at all, meow!

The cat-girl puffed out her chest—definitely not small—proudly gripped her gorgeous slender golden spear, and set herself into a charging stance.

Then—

In the next moment—

The boulder rolling in from afar exploded into rubble. The deafening blast even made Lefiya instinctively crouch down and clamp her hands over her ears.

Terrifying… Anya could do that?!

"Done, meow!"

"Good. Then we keep moving."

"Yes, meow!!!"

With Anya clearing the way, the trio quickly reached an area they hadn't stepped into before.

The tunnel felt strangely stretched, like it had been pulled longer. They walked and walked, encountering no monsters at all—until, finally, they saw the far end.

A small cavern chamber.

Great clusters of glowing motes floated in the air like tiny brilliant stars, casting a pale blue light.

On the ground bloomed a chaotic spread of wildflowers in every color.

Between the little flowers, tiny lights drifted like fireflies—calming and lovely.

"So beautiful," Lefiya murmured at once, the nature-loving elf genuinely awed.

At the same time—

Evan and Anya both noticed someone lying among the flowers:

A kobold… wearing pure white priestly robes.

As they drew closer, Evan realized it was a female kobold—her figure beneath the robe made that unmistakable.

She was nothing like the filthy kobolds they'd seen before—treated like "hunting dogs" and "mounts" by goblins.

This female kobold was dressed with eerie nobility, even adorned with exquisite jewelry linked from glittering stones. She lay quietly among the flowers—

Already dead.

The gaping wound torn open in her chest, and the dark red tainted blood seeping from it, said everything.

Around her neck, Evan spotted another cracked stone fragment carved with the same unknown characters.

He approached carefully and picked it up.

[Saintess's Sigil · I: The Goblin clan cannot give birth to females. Yet the "Blue Moon" they worship is a mother goddess. Therefore, goblins regard all females of other races as symbols of sanctity and nobility, swearing their kingdom's strongest knights to guard them with their lives.]

The moment he lifted that small stone—

Suddenly—

Evan felt the Dungeon tremble.

Something was coming!!

The glowing motes around them suddenly gathered together, then swirled and surged toward the tunnel.

Far ahead—in the passage they'd come through—

At some point, a goblin knight had appeared. It wore pale armor, a deep blue full-moon emblem painted on its chest, dragging a greatsword far larger than its own body as it slowly trudged forward like a walking corpse.

Huge clusters of light swarmed around it, illuminating the knight's filthy, blood-smeared hands—and the weapon behind it, stained with the same rusted blood.

And at that moment—

A name surfaced in Evan's mind for no reason at all:
