"Wait, Nirva?" Xaiden called. "Nivra?"
"I think she's gone," Jax sighed. "Look, this was fun and all, but I'd just leave it at that. It's not like her family is going to give up their heirloom, so we won't get to collect Reader anyway." He studied Xaiden for a minute before continuing, "And you can't save them all, she's made the choice to ignore what you've said so far. Maybe she'll think about it one day and venture out of whatever compound they've got her in, but I think it's best to let this go now."
Xaiden sighed heavily, "It just bothers me. That book, her, all of it. It was hard enough living with my last name before, and now all this." He gestured to the room filled with Writer's notes and papers for the Book of Wisdom.
"I hear you, but you've proven you're more than just a Caelus, you're our friend." Jax replied. "We wouldn't be out here if it wasn't for you. And seriously, even if you or your ancestors did do something shady once upon a time, it doesn't have to define you. Right?"
Xaiden nodded and swallowed the lump forming in his throat. He couldn't help but wonder if Jax would still be saying that if he knew even a little more about Xaiden's family or his life outside of school and these woods. He pushed the thought aside and changed the subject. "We really should get going, it's already dark out now."
"Yeah, I'm starving now too." Jax laughed and let the topic slide to lighter matters as they made their way back to the fence and said their goodbyes.
