Player_03:
GUYS WHERE DID THE MAP GO?
Player_04:
I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING
Player_02:
PLAYER 01?
Me.
Player_01:
I'm here.
Then another message appeared.
Guest_666:
Don't move.
Black.
A voice.
Calm.
Almost sad.
"That was the last normal day."
I opened my eyes.
For a moment, I didn't know where I was.
Then I saw the sun.
Warm golden light stretched across the world.
Trees moved gently in the wind. Players walked along the paths. Chat messages appeared and disappeared in the corner of my vision.
Somewhere nearby, someone laughed.
A short notification pinged.
Another player ran past me.
It was...
beautiful.
And that was what frightened me.
I knew this place.
Not the dead version of Server 01 I'd seen before.
Not the empty streets.
Not the gray sky.
This was Server 01 before everything went wrong.
Before the deletion.
Eleven years ago.
I looked around.
Six players stood nearby.
Player 02.
Player 03.
Player 04.
Player 05.
Player 06.
And me.
Player 01.
For the first time, I wasn't watching a recording of myself.
I was remembering.
Farther away stood Guest 666.
He wasn't moving.
He was watching us.
And suddenly I understood something.
He hadn't been waiting for something to happen.
He had been waiting for us to notice that it already had.
"Race you to Spawn!"
Player 03 took off running.
I laughed.
"You're gonna lose."
I chased him.
For a few seconds, everything felt normal.
Just a game.
Six players.
One world.
Nothing hidden.
No archives.
No doors.
No Server 05.
No voices telling me I wasn't supposed to remember.
Just us.
I almost forgot that this was a memory.
Then Player 06 stopped.
I looked back.
He stood at the edge of the path.
His eyes were fixed on Guest 666.
"You coming?"
Guest 666 shook his head.
"No."
Player 06 frowned.
"Why?"
Guest 666 didn't answer.
His head tilted slightly, as though he were listening to something none of us could hear.
Then:
"Something's wrong."
I looked at the sky.
Nothing.
The sun was shining.
The trees were moving.
The world looked perfect.
Then a tree flickered.
Once.
I blinked.
It was normal again.
"Did you see that?" Player 03 asked.
Nobody answered.
A dry pop came from somewhere behind us.
The building beside the road disappeared.
No explosion.
No collapse.
One moment it was there.
The next—
nothing.
Then it returned.
Player 04 stared at it.
"What the hell?"
The sun stopped moving.
I didn't notice at first.
Then I realized the shadows weren't moving either.
The wind slowed.
The leaves froze.
The world had stopped.
Not crashed.
Not lagged.
Stopped.
It felt as though everything was waiting for something.
Player 04 looked at us.
"Guys?"
He didn't move.
Player 03 waved a hand in front of his face.
"Hey."
Nothing.
His avatar remained perfectly still.
Then a message appeared in chat.
hello?
Another.
hello?
Then:
DISCONNECTED
At the exact same moment, I heard a join sound.
Then a disconnect sound.
Together.
My stomach tightened.
Player 03 looked at me.
"What just happened?"
"He left."
Player 06 shook his head.
"No."
He stared at Player 04.
"He didn't."
Player 04 was still standing there.
But something about him had changed.
He looked like an avatar with nobody inside it.
Player 03 opened the menu.
"I'm leaving."
He clicked LEAVE.
Nothing happened.
Again.
Nothing.
Then:
ERROR
Unable to leave experience.
"Guys..."
His voice sounded different.
Thin.
Afraid.
I looked at him.
His fingers flickered.
Then his arms.
Then parts of his face.
It wasn't like watching someone die.
It was like watching the game forget what he was.
His body broke apart into fragments.
Player 03 looked directly at me.
"Don't let me—"
He vanished.
No scream.
No explosion.
Only one long digital tone.
Then chat displayed:
Player_03 has left the experience.
I stared at the message.
One second later:
Player_03 has joined the experience.
I waited.
Nothing.
No avatar.
No footsteps.
Nothing.
Only the message.
Everyone turned toward Guest 666.
So did I.
He hadn't moved.
"You know what's happening."
Silence.
"Tell us."
His head lowered.
When he finally looked up, his expression was different.
Not empty.
Tired.
"The server is being deleted."
Player 02 stepped forward.
"Then we'll leave."
Guest 666 looked at him.
"You can't."
"Why?"
Guest 666 looked at me.
"Because you're already part of it."
I didn't understand.
Behind us, another building flickered.
Then another.
A section of road vanished.
The sky darkened.
Not like night.
Like someone was removing it.
Player 05 disappeared next.
One moment he was standing beside us.
The next, half his body became transparent.
He looked down.
"What is happening?"
Nobody answered.
He looked at Player 02.
Then at me.
"I don't want to go."
His voice broke.
Then he was gone.
The chat didn't even announce it.
Player 06 disappeared seconds later.
He turned toward me.
For some reason, I remember his expression more clearly than anything else.
He looked terrified.
But not of disappearing.
Of what would happen after.
"Player 01."
I looked at him.
He hesitated.
Then:
"If you forget us..."
His avatar flickered.
"...you have to come back."
He disappeared.
I stood there, unable to move.
I didn't understand what he'd meant.
Not then.
Player 02 was still beside me.
The world was almost completely gone now.
The sky was black.
The roads were disappearing beneath our feet.
There was no wind.
No music.
No chat.
Only a deep humming beneath everything.
Player 02 looked at me.
For the first time, I noticed how much we resembled each other.
Not just our avatars.
Something deeper.
Something I couldn't name.
He looked at the empty world.
Then at me.
"If we forget..."
"What?"
He swallowed.
"Promise you'll remember me."
I stared at him.
I wanted to ask why.
I wanted to ask what he meant.
Instead I said:
"I promise."
He nodded.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
Then his body flickered.
"Wait."
He disappeared.
I reached for him.
My hand closed around nothing.
I was alone.
Almost.
Guest 666 stood beside me.
The world around us was barely there anymore.
Black sky.
Empty ground.
Silence.
I looked at him.
"Why aren't you disappearing?"
"Because I'm not supposed to."
"What are you?"
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Are you one of them?"
His eyes remained fixed on the empty world.
"I remember."
Nothing more.
But somehow, those two words frightened me more than an explanation would have.
The final pieces of Server 01 disappeared.
Then a door appeared behind us.
The same door.
The one I'd seen before.
I recognized it immediately.
Only now I understood something.
It hadn't appeared.
It had been there all along.
Guest 666 walked toward it.
He opened the door.
Beyond it was darkness.
A corridor.
Endless.
Doors stretched into the distance.
Numbers covered them.
And farther.
Farther than I could see.
"What's inside?"
Guest 666 stared into the corridor.
"Everything they deleted."
I looked at him.
"Then we can bring them back."
He turned toward me.
"No."
A pause.
"You can."
I didn't understand.
"Come with me."
He didn't move.
"Someone has to remember."
"Remember what?"
His eyes met mine.
This time, he wasn't speaking to Player 01.
He was speaking to me.
The person I would become.
The person standing in front of the computer eleven years later.
"You."
The door began to close.
I reached for it.
Too late.
Black.
I opened my eyes.
My room.
My computer.
My breathing was rapid.
My shirt was damp with sweat.
For several seconds, I couldn't tell whether I had actually woken up.
Then I looked at the monitor.
A message was waiting.
MEMORY RESTORED
Beneath it:
PLAYER 01
Then:
EVENT: SERVER DELETION
DATE: 2015
I stared at the date.
Eleven years.
The number that kept appearing everywhere.
I reached toward the screen.
Then—
Knock.
I froze.
The sound hadn't come from the computer.
It had come from my room.
I slowly turned toward the door.
Nothing.
Just the hallway beyond it.
I looked back at the monitor.
A new file had appeared.
I hadn't created it.
It was simply there.
PLAYER_03
I opened it.
A still image appeared.
Player 03.
Red avatar.
Status:
DELETED
I stared at the word.
Then it changed.
RESTORED
A join sound rang through the room.
I stepped backward.
"No."
The screen went black.
White text appeared.
PLAYER 03 HAS JOINED.
I stared at the door.
Knock.
Again.
Knock.
My heart hammered.
I stood.
Every step toward the door felt wrong.
My hand closed around the handle.
I opened it.
The hallway was empty.
Nobody.
Then I looked down.
Something was standing on the floor.
Red.
Motionless.
Player 03.
I couldn't breathe.
"You're alive."
Slowly, he raised his head.
His movements were almost human.
Almost.
He looked at me.
"No."
A pause.
Then:
"I'm remembered."
Black.
POST-CREDIT
An archive window opened.

A file was selected.

The cursor moved downward.
One final file appeared.
GUEST_666
Status:

The cursor stopped.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then the file blinked.
OPENING...
The screen remained black.
A voice whispered:
"You promised."
CUT TO BLACK.
