Chapter 46 - Chapter 46 — What He Gave Up

The news broke quietly.

No headlines.

No public outrage.

Just a ripple in the circles that mattered.

Dominic Blackwood had withdrawn from the Valen Consortium deal.

A deal men killed for.

Elara found out the way she always did now—not from rumors, but from him.

She walked into his office that evening and saw the city reflected in the glass behind him. His jacket was off. His tie loosened. He looked… human.

"You gave up Valen," she said.

Dominic didn't look surprised. "Yes."

"That deal would've secured your dominance in the eastern markets."

"I know."

She studied his face carefully. "People don't walk away from power like that without a reason."

He met her gaze. "I didn't walk away from power. I chose a different kind."

Her heart skipped.

"Explain," she said softly.

Dominic stood, moving closer until there was only honesty between them. "Valen required silence. Compliance. Turning a blind eye to things that would've haunted you."

Elara swallowed. "You thought of me."

"I think of you," he corrected. "Before I move. Before I speak. Before I decide who I am."

The words settled deep in her chest.

"You weren't always like this," she whispered.

"No," he agreed. "I wasn't."

---

That night, they attended a small private dinner—no cameras, no press. Just a handful of allies Dominic trusted.

One of them leaned over and laughed. "You've gone soft, Blackwood."

Dominic didn't even glance at the man. "No. I've gone precise."

Elara felt the weight of his hand at the small of her back. Not possessive. Protective.

She realized then—

he wasn't hiding her anymore.

He was standing with her.

---

Later, alone in the quiet of the penthouse, Elara rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heart.

"Do you ever worry," she asked, "that loving someone gives people a weapon against you?"

Dominic's arm tightened slightly around her.

"Yes."

She lifted her head. "Then why do it?"

He looked down at her, expression raw in a way few ever saw. "Because some things are worth the risk of destruction."

Her breath caught.

"I don't feel like a risk," she said quietly.

"No," he replied. "You feel like truth."

She smiled, tears threatening. "I don't plan on leaving."

The words were simple.

They nearly broke him.

---

Across town, Victor Hale stood before a wall of information—photos, timelines, names.

At the center:

Elara Blackwood.

He tapped the screen thoughtfully.

"They're building something real," he murmured. "Good."

A smile curved his lips.

"Real things shatter better."

---

That night, Dominic dreamed of the past.

Of a file he never closed.

Of a name he never spoke.

And for the first time—

He woke afraid not of enemies…

But of losing the woman sleeping peacefully beside him.
