Chapter 75 - The Circle Splits

The moment Hale left the hall, the atmosphere twisted into something darker. No one moved. No one spoke. It felt as if the walls themselves were holding their breath, waiting to see who would be the first to break under the tension.

John stood at the centre of the stage, unshaken. Morgan and Celine flanked him like two shadows ready to strike. Rita remained close, her presence steady, her eyes sharp as she scanned the room for any shifting loyalty.

The Circle had not collapsed.

But it had cracked.

A senior member rose slowly, clearing his throat. "John… Hale carries influence that cannot be easily dismissed. If he considers this an act of hostility, the consequences will be severe."

John replied, "He considers anything he cannot control a threat."

Another board member stepped forward. "This decision places us all at risk. The Circle is meant to remain unified."

John faced him calmly. "Unity built on fear is not unity."

Whispers spread.

Celine scanned their faces. "Half of them are already trying to decide whether to support you or run to Hale."

Morgan added, "And the other half are waiting to see who falls first."

Rita remained silent, but the tension in her shoulders betrayed her awareness. Hale's return was not just a political threat. It was personal. And she knew he would not hesitate to use her past to destabilise everything John built.

One man raised his voice above the murmurs. "John, if you continue with this appointment, you force us into choosing sides."

"Good," John answered. "Choose."

The hall stirred uneasily.

Another man shouted, "You cannot push the Circle into open conflict."

John stepped forward. "Conflict was already here. I am simply refusing to pretend otherwise."

Morgan whispered, "If they do not understand that, they never will."

A woman near the front spoke carefully. "Hale has allies who have supported him for years. They are loyal and deeply rooted in the structure. If he mobilises them, they will challenge your authority."

John replied, "Then let them challenge it openly instead of waiting in the shadows."

Rita finally spoke. "Hale did not come here to issue a warning. He came to observe the atmosphere. He wanted to see who would bow and who would stand."

Celine nodded. "And now he has seen both."

An older member stood, leaning heavily on his cane. "Your father faced rivals, but he was wise enough to avoid provoking a war he could not control."

John met the man's gaze. "My father faced his enemies head-on. And so will I."

Morgan smirked. "He has more fire than his father. That is going to unsettle a lot of them."

The older man pointed his cane toward Rita. "And placing her at your side only adds fuel to the fire. She carries a history that weakens your position."

Rita stiffened slightly, but before she could respond, John stepped forward.

"Her history only weakens those who fear the truth."

The hall went silent again.

Then a younger Circle member spoke from the far left. "What is our next move. Hale will not sit still. He will not wait. He will strike."

Celine answered, "He will not strike immediately. He will build alliances first. He will seek out those who feel threatened by the changes. He will whisper in the right ears."

Morgan added, "And he will try to control the narrative before you can."

John looked at Rita. "We start by protecting the Advisor."

Rita blinked with quiet surprise. "Protect me?"

John's voice sharpened. "He will come for you first. Not physically. Politically. Socially. He will use the remnants of the scandal to discredit you. He will try to make the Circle doubt your role."

Morgan nodded. "He knows attacking you publicly destabilises John."

Celine continued, "And if he weakens John's Advisor, he weakens John."

Rita's jaw tightened. "I will handle whatever he sends."

John shook his head. "No. We handle it together."

Several board members looked away, uncomfortable with the unity forming among John's inner circle.

One of the men who had been whispering earlier finally stepped forward. "John… if you insist on this path, you must understand something. Hale does not fight fair."

John replied, "Neither do I."

Morgan muttered, "That is the spirit."

Celine stepped onto the platform fully now, signalling the end of the debate. "This meeting is concluded. Security will escort each Circle member out one at a time. No one leaves in groups. No one discusses what happened here until we review the communications logs."

The board members exchanged nervous glances.

Celine continued, "We track every call made from this building. Anyone who contacts Hale or his people will be flagged."

A few faces paled.

Morgan clapped his hands once. "Move. The show is over. If you are loyal, stay quiet. If you are not, we will know."

Members began filing out, one by one: Whispering, hesitating and watching each other.

The fracture was evident.

The split had begun.

When the hall finally emptied, the four of them remained on the stage.

Rita stared at the doors Hale had walked through. "He will not forgive this."

John answered, "I do not need his forgiveness. I need his mistakes."

Celine stepped forward. "We should return to the suite. We have a lot to prepare."

Morgan added, "And a lot to anticipate."

John turned to them. "Before we go, there is something you all need to understand."

Rita, Morgan, and Celine looked at him.

John said,

"Hale did not come here to intimidate me. He came here to measure me."

Morgan frowned. "And what did he see?"

John's eyes hardened.

"He saw someone who would not bow."

Celine asked, "You think he will strike soon?"

John nodded. "Yes. Because now he fears the shift."

Rita crossed her arms. "Which means his next move will not be subtle."

John turned toward the empty hall.

"It will be destructive."

They stood in silence, absorbing that truth.

Then John said softly, with a calm that carried both warning and promise,

"We are not stepping into war."

He paused.

"We are already in it."
