Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Counterattack Against the Headwind

Era 2137, USA, New York, Solar System Federation Committee Premier Building

Joseph hadn't even regained his footing before he plunged headfirst, falling flat on his face in a comical manner. Of course, Burgred certainly couldn't laugh, because behind Joseph were rows of laser bullets from electronic Gatling heavy machine guns. He knew what was happening without Joseph needing to say a word. He immediately rushed out, but the enemy naturally wouldn't let him peek his head out; laser bullets immediately swept toward them.

"These people are f***ing crazy!" Ankalia screamed frantically. "They actually dare to attack right under the Solar System Federation Committee Premier Building! They really have gall the size of the sky. Who do they think they are?!"

However, these were obviously just words spoken in anger. She certainly knew that there must be someone behind the scenes shielding the militants' actions.

In the previous few skirmishes, they had been at a disadvantage, which made that group of militants feel that the Solar System Federation Secret Police were nothing special. Consequently, they acted recklessly, but their luck was about to end.

Burgred removed a detonator from the wall, threw it to the rooftop, and climbed up bit by bit along the rope Joseph had just tied. After reaching the top, he observed the situation below. Undoubtedly, it was enemy fire suppression again; they couldn't lift their heads at all and could only rely on the "blind firing" of the four people resisting below.

Burgred was so angry he nearly passed out. He took out his binoculars to observe, confirmed the bomb was within normal blast range, then picked up the detonator and pressed the switch.

Even at death's door, this group of militants would never have imagined that the Secret Police, whom they had been bombing all along, would turn the tables today. Several C4 crystalline scattering bombs on the street side exploded in succession. The resulting high heat and radiation directly stunned the militants, then burned them to ash within ten seconds. Even those lucky enough to survive could not escape the radiation attack. This dose of intense radiation could cause death within an hour. Of course, this radiation had a diffusion limit; it lost the ability to spread further after ten meters. However, the radiation effects could stack; if a person stood in the center of the explosion array, they might die in less than half an hour.

Of course, Joseph's assault team was still within the safe zone and would not be affected by the radiation or the blast wave. Although the temperature was somewhat high, it was not enough to cause combustion or burns.

The enemy never imagined they would have such methods.

In the past, attacks were always initiated by the militants while the Secret Police passively defended. In the eyes of the militant high command, the Secret Police could absolutely never predict their attack time and route beforehand, so naturally, they would have no opportunity to plant bombs in advance.

"What is wrong with these bds today? How could we lose to those pieces of st? How am I supposed to explain this to my superiors?!" the militant leader screamed in rage. "Launch an attack! I will not allow you to fail a second time! Absolutely fing not! Did you f***ing hear me?!"

With no other choice, the militants could only utilize the reserve troops they had brought this time to launch an attack. However, it was obvious that the number of reserve troops was insufficient. But the militant leader anticipated that the Secret Police's reinforcements would not arrive so quickly, so he wanted to wipe out the Core Investigation Team as soon as possible and then slip away.

However, man's schemes are inferior to heaven's plans.

They were still outsmarted.

This time, their attack met with no resistance, so they could only search the building for the members of the Core Investigation Team and attempt to eliminate them. But they did not notice that, at this very moment, the building was already filled with poison gas.

A militant who had just walked in collapsed immediately. However, the militants who had received the attack order could not care about that much. In their impatience, they all rushed in at once. By the time they realized there was poison gas inside, it was too late. This potent gas caused them to fall one after another. Soon, the entire block was filled with gas, and the few remaining militant reserve troops were also wiped out.

Of course, this gas caused a painless death; otherwise, the Core Investigation Team would not have had the chance to use it. If its lethality were too gruesome, it would have likely been banned by the Solar System Federation Committee long ago.

At this point, seeing that the situation had gone awry, the militant leader immediately retreated with his subordinate officers. The Core Investigation Team let them go, after all, they weren't sure if they could finish them off before chasing them to the militant base. If they chased them all the way to their base, given the number of militants there, the team would absolutely be unable to escape.

However, while cleaning up the battlefield, Joseph discovered a gadget that shouldn't have been there.

A high-frequency recorder.
