Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Skirmish at Dawn

The first light of dawn barely touched the edges of the city when Emerald and her recruits moved through the streets, cautious but determined. The air smelled of damp stone and early morning smoke. Every shadow felt alive, and Emerald's mark pulsed faintly a quiet reminder that the Queen's presence lingered nearby.

Kael led the way, scouting ahead. "They're coming," he whispered. "Scouts. Queen's soldiers. Probably testing our strength."

Emerald's eyes narrowed. "Then we don't wait for them to strike. We meet them prepared."

The recruits formed a loose circle around Emerald. Their training had been basic but effective, and each pair had learned to trust one another. The tension was high, but Emerald could feel their courage, faint but real, like sparks ready to ignite.

Movement flickered in the shadows ahead. A small squad of the Queen's scouts stepped into the open, weapons raised. They paused, scanning the street, clearly expecting an ambush.

Emerald took a deep breath. "Hold your ground. Don't attack unless I give the signal."

The scouts advanced cautiously, unaware of the hidden allies surrounding them. Emerald raised her hands subtly, letting her magic ripple quietly through the area. Not enough to burn, but enough to warn, to unbalance, to create hesitation.

A scout lunged forward, and Sam intercepted with precise agility, disarming him and pinning him to the ground. The others froze, caught between fear and confusion.

Emerald stepped forward, her green light flaring faintly but controlled. "You do not need to fight us," she called. "Go back. Tell your Queen that we are awake, and we will not hide."

The squad hesitated, eyes flicking between her and the rest of the group. Her calm authority, combined with the quiet but unmistakable pulse of her magic, unsettled them.

One scout made a sudden move, drawing a dagger. Emerald responded instantly, her hand glowing as a green tether of magic wrapped around the weapon, pulling it harmlessly from his grasp. He stumbled back, wide-eyed.

Kael, Sam, and Noah pressed the advantage, guiding the recruits to subdue the rest without injury. Within moments, the scouts were disarmed and trapped, stunned but alive.

Emerald's voice rang out. "Leave. Tell the Queen her scouts are no longer feared. Tell her we are ready. Tell her we do not hide."

The scouts looked at one another, uncertainty and awe in their eyes, before retreating carefully, glancing back only once at the calm, controlled figure of Emerald.

The recruits exhaled collectively, adrenaline still pulsing, relief mixing with newfound confidence.

Sara stepped forward, placing a hand on Emerald's shoulder. "You did it. They came for a fight, and you didn't just survive you commanded them."

Emerald nodded, feeling the quiet hum of her magic settle. "This was only the beginning. They tested us today, but the Queen will not stop. We have to grow stronger, faster. Every choice we make now matters."

Kael glanced around, noting the recruits' wide eyes and raised spirits. "They'll follow you anywhere."

Emerald allowed herself a small, determined smile. "Then we lead. And we prepare for what comes next."

Above them, the city stirred with the first real promise of resistance. The Queen's reach was long, but Emerald's power, her leadership, and her growing allies were proving that fear was no longer the only language the city would understand.
