Chapter 23 - 23 Are You Ugly?

The height of summer gradually passed, and autumn began to set in. The Land of Water, which had just felt a hint of warmth, was once again replaced by a chill.

Nearly two months had passed, and Ao's death had gradually been forgotten by most people. After all, the situation in Kirigakure was so tense that everyone was preoccupied with their own affairs. Who had the time to care about whether someone else lived or died?

But what surprised many was that Ao had been the strongest ninja under Genshi's command. Regarding the cause of his death, Genshi, whose authority in the village was nearly equal to the Mizukage's, had shown no reaction at all. Anyone with half a brain could sense that there was an ulterior secret behind this, but no one dared to investigate further.

Mingyue continued to train in the Flying Thunder God Technique as usual. Even without the system-rewarded Amenotejikara, the Flying Thunder God Technique alone was a top-tier divine skill below the Six Paths level. Not just in battle, but in daily life, the ability to teleport instantly within a certain distance was enough to make Mingyue determined to learn it.

One must remember, during the Third Great Ninja War, if Namikaze Minato hadn't given Kakashi a Flying Thunder God kunai in advance, allowing him to return for reinforcements at top speed after his mission, Mr. 50/50 and Nohara Rin would have likely met their end early on the Kannabi Bridge battlefield.

Mingyue noticed something.

There seemed to be some changes in Kirigakure recently. Because of this, that fellow Obito had been returning to Kirigakure with increasing frequency. He, who often wouldn't return for a month or two, had been making secret appearances in the village every few days lately.

It was just that Obito didn't specifically come to see Mingyue. It was even more impossible for him to let the White Zetsu clone reveal his whereabouts. Mingyue sensed Obito's return through his Observation Haki.

One should know that although Obito had set up Kirigakure as his base, he actually spent more time operating in Amegakure.

According to Mingyue's speculation as a transmigrator, the number of official Akatsuki members was probably no more than five at this point. Obito should be busy searching for powerful rogue ninja in various countries to recruit into the Akatsuki. His foolish nephew, Uchiha Itachi, should also be about to graduate early around this time, which would have attracted Obito's attention.

To be running back to Kirigakure under such circumstances, something had most likely happened.

But Mingyue chose not to ask. Whatever could make Obito this concerned was probably no small matter. When things blew up, he would find out without needing Obito to tell him.

Not just within Kirigakure, Mingyue also investigated a lot of news from the outside world. For example, although the Third Great Ninja War had ended, due to the death of Namikaze Minato, the recently extinguished flames of war showed signs of rekindling.

Although it hadn't escalated into a large-scale war like before, minor frictions between countries were continuous. The most frequent friction was between the Land of Fire and the Land of Lightning.

...

...

Kirigakure's coastal training ground.

A thick fog permeated the surface of the sea, like the bloody rule that shrouded Kirigakure, difficult to dispel.

On the pier, Terumi Mei stood quietly.

SPLASH!!

At that moment, a giant shark, comparable in size to an orca, burst out of the sea. It opened its blood-red maw full of fangs, intending to swallow the charming beauty whole.

Terumi Mei, her beautiful eyes tightly shut, suddenly opened them the instant the shark's fangs were less than half a meter from her delicate, egg-white-like skin.

Her hands flew through seals at high speed, condensing chakra in her throat.

"Boil Release: Skilled Mist Technique!"

Pfft—

A viscous liquid, like glue but emitting scorching heat, was spat from Terumi Mei's small, crimson mouth. The moment it covered the giant shark's body, it caused the beast to tumble in agony, crashing back into the sea in a pathetic state.

As the high-temperature Boil Release mixed with the seawater, it created boiling bubbles. After a few more seconds, what rose again from the water was nothing but a shark skeleton.

Clap Clap Clap~

The sound of applause came from behind her.

Without turning her head, Terumi Mei already knew who it was.

"Finally decided to show up?"

Terumi Mei feigned an angry tone, but when it came out of her mouth, it sounded more like the playful pout of a young girl in love.

It had been nearly two months since they had last met.

Walking up from behind, Mingyue, still wearing the Kirigakure ANBU mask as usual, wrapped his arms around Terumi Mei's slender waist from behind, pulling her into his embrace. He whispered in her ear:

"Sorry, you know that as an ANBU member, it's difficult for me to get away."

Mingyue gently nuzzled Terumi Mei's hair and chuckled lightly:

"You've become very skilled with your Boil Release."

As he spoke, Mingyue maintained his embrace from behind and slowly sat down.

Terumi Mei also enjoyed this rare sweet moment. Her beautiful eyes shifted back, glancing at the mask on Mingyue's face, her own face puffing up like a bun as she complained:

"That mask on your face, can't you take it off?"

The relationship between them was an unspoken understanding, but this jerk still wouldn't take off that damn mask.

Every time they parted ways and she went home, Terumi Mei couldn't help but secretly wonder if this guy was ugly. Was he too embarrassed to show his true face to a beautiful woman like her?

Ahem—wrong, girl.

I don't have experience in that area...
