Chapter 31 - A SMALL TALK ?

Now, there is one more thing I must tell you about

"The mission board," the Peak Lord said, "is not a necessity for you. As a direct disciple, you will be provided with food, funds, clothing, and everything else you need to focus on your cultivation."

She paused, letting that sink in.

"However, the mission board is also an opportunity—an opportunity for growth, for experience, for enlightenment. Every cultivation level in our sect has a mission board, through which disciples can earn merit points. At the end of each year, the disciple with the most merit points in each cultivation realm is granted a chance to choose anything from the sect treasury."

She smiled slightly.

"It is a way to motivate disciples to push beyond their limits, to seek challenges, to grow through experience."

Lin listened, his mind turning over the information.

A chance to choose anything from the sect treasury, he thought. That is a significant reward. But... is it what I truly want?

He had read about the sect treasury in his books—the vast collection of artifacts, techniques, and resources that had been accumulated over nine hundred million years. It was a hoard of such magnitude that even the most powerful cultivators would be tempted by its contents.

But Lin had never been driven by material rewards.

What he wanted was understanding. What he wanted was growth. What he wanted was to climb the path of cultivation to its highest peak.

The mission board is not about treasure, he realized. It is about experience. About testing myself against the world. About growing through challenge.

The Peak Lord studied his expression, reading his thoughts with the ease of long familiarity.

"I can see that you are not interested in the material rewards," she said. "And that is... good. Material rewards can be a trap, a distraction from what truly matters."

She paused, her gaze softening slightly.

"But I would still encourage you to consider the mission board, child. Not for the treasures—but for the growth. For the chance to test your understanding against the world."

Lin nodded slowly.

"I will consider it, Master."

The Peak Lord's expression shifted becoming more thoughtful, more deliberate.

"There is one more thing, child," she said. "A small matter, but an important one."

Lin waited.

"I cannot continue to address you as 'child' forever," she said. "It is undignified for a disciple of your standing and it will become increasingly inappropriate as you grow and mature."

She paused.

"You need a substitute name. A name that you will be known by, until you have earned the right to your true name. It does not need to be your final name names in our world are earned, not given but it should be something that reflects who you are, or who you aspire to become."

Lin considered this.

A name, he thought. A name that I will be known by.

He thought about his journey so far. The cliff he had climbed in blood and darkness. The five years of training in the heart of the mountain. The understanding that had allowed him to redirect an elder's qi pressure. The spiral foundation he had built within his dantian.

What name could possibly encompass all of that?

"Master," he said finally, "I do not have a name in mind right now. Please give me some time to consider it. I will tell you when I have found the right one."

The Peak Lord nodded, accepting his answer.

"Very well. Take your time, child and think carefully. A name is a powerful thing. It can shape a life as much as a life can shape a name."

Lin bowed.

"Thank you, Master. For everything."

He turned and walked out of the hall, his steps light, his heart full

The balcony outside the hall was vast—a wide, open space that overlooked the mountain ranges of Dove Peak. The setting sun painted the sky in shades of orange and gold, and the clouds that clung to the mountainside glowed with an inner light, like islands of fire in a sea of mist.

Lin walked to the edge of the balcony and leaned against the railing, letting the cool evening air wash over him.

What a journey, he thought. What a world.

. He had trained for five years in the heart of a mountain. He had formed a dantian, built a foundation, and stepped into the Foundation Realm.

And it was just the beginning.

Ahead of him lay the mission boards, the techniques, the challenges of the cultivation world. Ahead of him lay the secrets of the nine peaks, the mysteries of the human continent, the vast and terrifying power of the Sovereigns.

Ahead of him lay everything.

And behind him...

Behind him lay a past life of suffering, a death he had chosen, and a rebirth he had embraced.

Lin smiled, the setting sun painting his face with golden light.

I have come so far, he thought. And I have so much further to go.

But I am ready.

I am ready for whatever comes next.

He stayed on the balcony until the sun had fully set, watching the stars emerge from the darkness of the sky.

Then he turned, walked back through the hall, and made his way toward his cave abode.

The journey was just beginning.

But he was already walking the path.

To be continued...
