Chapter 47 - 9.2-The Boy Who Was Never Born

The clone survivor was kept under medical quarantine inside Asterion's auxiliary bay.

The chamber glowed with sterile luminescence, wall panels humming softly while nanodrones drifted through the air, scanning life signs. Yu Zhen stood outside the observation glass as if rooted to the floor.

On the other side lay a boy who could have been him.

Same silver dark hair.

Same pale eyes.

Same delicate bone structure.

But thinner. More fragile. Scars webbed the clone's wrists, scars carved where restraints once bit into clone-biological skin. His rib cage barely rose beneath the hospital fabric.

Yu Zhen's fingers trembled.

"I spent an my entire lifetime trying to understand who I was," he murmured. "And now I'm standing face to face with unnatural proof that identity doesn't belong to one body."

Behind him, Lian Xuan remained silent, posture tense yet anchored. He watched Yu Zhen rather than the clone.

[SYSTEM OBSERVATION]

[MEMORY FRAGMENT 9: PASSIVE FLARE]

[EMOTIONAL STABILITY: AT RISK]

"He's alive because you changed course," Yu Zhen said without turning. "Without you, he would've died with the rest of the station."

Lian Xuan answered carefully.

"He's alive because the empire crossed a line I won't pretend to see anymore."

Medical lights flickered as the clone's eyes fluttered open.

Yu Zhen inhaled sharply and stepped through the chamber's auto-seal.

The boy blinked, focusing on him in slow confusion.

"You… look like command," the clone whispered, voice hoarse from disuse.

"I look like you," Yu Zhen replied gently, standing beside the bed.

Confusion crept across the clone's expression. He struggled to sit up until Yu Zhen instinctively placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Easy."

That simple touch sparked something electric through both of them.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[SOUL INTERFERENCE ANOMALY DETECTED]

[MEMORY FRAGMENT 9: EMERGENCY SURGE 69%]

Images slammed into Yu Zhen's mind.

A laboratory chamber.

Needles plunged into flesh.

A boy screaming for someone named "Xuan", whom whom he had never met.

Yu Zhen staggered.

Lian Xuan crossed the chamber instantly, catching his arm.

"What happened?"

"He remembers you," Yu Zhen whispered. "But not from this world."

The clone stared at Lian Xuan, eyes wide.

"You…" He frowned, uncertainty clouding his features. "Why do I know you?"

The air thickened.

Lian Xuan studied the boy slowly, visibly shaken.

"You shouldn't."

"But I do," the clone insisted faintly. "When they trapped me in sleep loops… I saw you pulling me out of darkness."

Yu Zhen felt the soul-thread burn behind his ribs.

"It's not your memory," Yu Zhen murmured. "It's a resonance. A spillover. You were mapped from my neural pattern."

"But memory bleeds," the clone said. "And pieces stayed."

[SYSTEM WARNING]

[SOUL MEMORY LEAK INTO GENETIC COPY CONFIRMED]

A new terror unfolded in the room.

The clones were not empty vessels after all.

Pieces of Yu Zhen's accumulated soul-echo lingered in each of them.

Identity could propagate.

Meaning the empire wasn't just using clones…

They were unknowingly manufacturing fractured souls.

Lian Xuan's jaw tightened so hard it creaked.

"They didn't just enslave bodies," he growled. "They enslaved consciousness."

The clone struggled upright suddenly, eyes flooding with emotion.

"I know I'm not real," he said. "They told us that every day. That we were disposable copies."

Yu Zhen crouched in front of him immediately.

"No," he said firmly. "You are living. You feel. You remember. That makes you real."

"But I borrowed your face," the boy whispered.

Yu Zhen shook his head slowly.

"You didn't borrow anything. The empire stole from both of us."

He pulled the fragile boy into a gentle hug.

The clone froze at first.

No one had ever embraced him before.

Then he collapsed into the contact, trembling as if the human nervous system itself was experiencing safety for the first time.

Lian Xuan watched silently.

[BOND EXPANSION EVENT]

[SECONDARY CONNECTION FORMED]

When Yu Zhen looked up again, his eyes were wet.

"They wanted to turn me into a template for annihilation."

Lian Xuan stepped forward and rested his hand at the back of Yu Zhen's neck, grounding him with warm pressure.

"And I'm done letting this empire weaponise your existence."

He turned to the clone.

"You'll remain here. Under my protection."

The boy stared.

"You mean… I won't go back?"

"Never," Lian Xuan said.

The clone's lips trembled.

"Saviour," he whispered.

Lian Xuan shook his head once.

"No. A captain who's tired of obeying monsters."

Later that night, the bridge lay in muted dim light.

Yu Zhen stood before the stars, arms folded loosely across his chest.

Lian Xuan joined him quietly.

"You absorbed more than expected today," he said. "Are you stable?"

Yu Zhen nodded slowly, but uncertainty rippled through his gaze.

"If my soul can echo inside other bodies… what does that make me?"

They stood shoulder to shoulder now.

"I think it makes you dangerous to empires," Lian Xuan replied. "And precious to anyone who actually values life."

Yu Zhen leaned into him unconsciously.

Their shoulders touched.

Not accidental.

Not withdrawn.

[SYSTEM AFFIRMATION]

[INTIMACY EVENT NON-COMBATIVE]

[AFFINITY INCREASE: 87%]

Yu Zhen's voice softened.

"I feel closer to you here than in some complete worlds."

"Because this time," Lian Xuan murmured, "I chose you without remembering why."

Silence bloomed.

Yu Zhen turned and kissed him softly.

Not hurried.

Not trembling.

Just breathe meeting breath beneath endless stars.

Lian Xuan responded slowly, hands finding Yu Zhen's waist, holding him steady rather than pulling.

When they separated, they remained close.

The bridge glass reflected the moment at them: two figures standing on the edge of infinite galaxies, bound not by destiny alone anymore but an unmistakable reality.

[SOUL THREAD: COSMIC BOND DEEPENED]

Elsewhere aboard the ship, the rescued clone stared at his reflection for the first time in his life.

Not as a weapon.

But as a person.

And from distant imperial sectors…

Unknown forces began tracking the Asterion.

They had discovered the escaped asset.

And next time, rescues would not be permitted.
