Chapter 3 - Chapter Two: Normal Day

That was an interesting dream. I guess it's not the weirdest I've had, but getting hit by a car is definitely something.

Anyway, I curl up from my comforter. The AC's cold breath hits me like a blizzard.

AC might be mankind's worst creation.

My comforter is my only savior. So warm and lovely, like a loving mother's embrace. Probably.

"Haaaaaaaaaaa… I need to get up."

So, I do.

Despite the fact that I do not want to!

I miss my warmth!

My loving mother's embrace!

With heavy legs, I walk to the bathroom.

Looking at myself in the mirror, I see… bedhead. Tired eyes. It seems that dream affected me more than I thought. I smile in the mirror. I look friendly.

After getting ready for the day, I step out into the hallway. My neighbor is loud this morning.

The chilly morning air hits my skin, it's not totally unpleasant.

Walking to school is probably the most relaxing part of my day. It's surprising. How desolate it all is. Even a city has quiet places. I haven't even seen anyone yet today. I'm not lonely though, it's for the best. Besides, I'll see my classmates soon. I'll probably miss this quiet moment when that happens.

Oh well.

The closer I get to the school, the louder everything is. Obviously, of course, but it doesn't make it any easier. The cars, the floods of people, the complaints of the cynical staff, the dozens of voices. It's all too much. I remember I vomited in the bathroom on my first day of school.

It was my own fault, I was too lazy to scope the place out, and it caused me to be late. From then on, I've always made sure to arrive early. Even that has limits.

The several voices coming from the cafeteria pierce my brain. I can't even complain, it's not their volume that's to blame.

Anyone else would be fine.

It's more manageable than when the buses come, at least.

That's why I hang out in one of the back stairwells. Even during school hours, people don't normally go back there.

I need my safe space.

The ridged stairs cause me to shift my seating constantly. An attempt to find a sweet spot that doesn't exist.

It's all just uncomfortable.

Almost like they weren't designed to be sat on… how curious.

Classes are normal. Boring. People are quiet.

Today really is…

Great…

Happy tears prick my eyes…

Beautiful…

I haven't been bothered a single time today…

Still…

I have a weird feeling. I don't know what it is, but today seems more familiar than usual.

Could just be my imagination, I guess.

It's not like I change what I do very often.

Does anyone? People are creatures of habit.

How deep… maybe I should sell my thoughts online?

Who'd my target audience be?

Idiots, probably.

Maybe my first client will be Ethan.

My second would be Ada, but I'd make it free.

I eat lunch alone, in my little safe space.

The vibrating sound from the cafeteria shakes my brain.

A mass collection of voices.

It's overwhelming. Even from here.

"Haaaaaah"

Why can't they just be quiet for once?

A lone voice gets closer, it's shrill, and bitchy.

I don't recognize her voice. It's an unpleasant one. She sounds like someone you'd hear on reality television.

She's cursing. About some guy that won't leave her alone.

How vexing... we have a similar problem then…

Have you tried staying in your room?

I'm sure both of us would be happier that way.

The echoes that emanate from her footsteps ruin my quiet corridor.

Closer.

Closer.

The door screams as it's opened…

You're so cruel…

The door was so peacefully closed. Yet, the barbaric princess violently pushed it open.

The princess turns her head, and looks at me with… contempt.

Like I'm a bug.

A bug?

Me?

I'm more of a spider, actually.

She says "nothing", and walks up the stairs with a huff.

The only thing noteworthy about her is her expensive-looking coat.

White, soft looking. Folds around the collar, down to the stomach.

Everything on her looks expensive.

Her phone vibrates in her pocket. She snaps at me this time.

"What are you looking at?"

This wall looks like a wall. Hm, I wonder what they meant by creating such a wall. These builders have such a way of building walls! It's definitely something!

I spit out a bland apology. Though, I didn't do anything wrong.

"Ah, sorry…"

The barbarian snaps her tongue.

"What kind of loser are you? Hiding out here by yourself? Don't you have any friends?"

Why are you still talking to me? I only speak English…

"Hey!"

The girl huffs after the door closes. I was having a decent lunch too… oh well. Getting to class early isn't a bad idea.

Thinking about it… didn't this happen before?

Déjà vu?

The rest of the day is pretty normal.

Everyone is loud. Just like always.

"Going home, Felix?"

...

I've definitely heard that before…

Ethan's stupid face again…

"So you're saying you're free."

The lake again. I see the family of geese. I see. No big deal.

I decide that it's a good time for a nice run! No specific reason though!

Man, today was a good day!

My feet hit the sidewalk pavement, again, and again. The impact vibrates up my leg as I run.

I hear someone.

I heard them yesterday too, not that I was paying attention.

The car.

Its engine roars.

It flies towards me.

Why?

Why is it following me?

Wasn't it an accident?

Why?

The tire hits the curb.

An impossibly heavy object crashes into his hip, sending him flying. If not for the railing.

His sides are ground between the car and the railing; the boy has a sudden similarity to a tube of toothpaste.

The points of contact compress, his bones rattle, but the boy feels nothing.

Red explodes from his mouth onto the pavement.

His brain rattles.

His vision shakes.

He turns his head. All he sees is the railing covered in red.

In his final moments, he thinks:

"Huh… new paint? That's… nice…"

My mouth tastes like iron.
