Chapter 64 - 64. The Jarring Sensation

The bus pulled into the Gogen-cho stop just a few minutes outside the neon buzz of central Aoshima. The vibe here was a total 180—narrower streets, quiet alleys, and a cozy, small-town atmosphere that made you feel like you could actually hear yourself think.

Itsuki was practically vibrating, leading the way with enough energy to power the whole district. "I still can't wrap my head around the fact that you've never been to Gogen-cho, man. Especially Komorebi! I could've sworn you told me you used to bring your siblings here."

Takumi let out a quiet huff of a laugh, keeping his steady pace. "You should know by now, Itsuki—my siblings don't even live in Aoshima. They're still out in the country with my grandparents."

Itsuki's face went redder than a stoplight. He let out a nervous giggle, aggressively scratching the back of his head as he realized his mistake. "Oh... yeah... right. Totally forgot. My bad, bro." He looked a little embarrassed, but he knew Takumi wasn't the type to hold a brain-fart against him.

"Alright, look, forget that!" Itsuki shouted, pivoting back into his usual hype-man mode. He slapped a heavy palm onto Takumi's shoulder, a massive grin plastered across his face. "Focus up, Taki! It is finally time for the two greatest best buds in the history of the world to experience the best coffee in the universe! Let's go, baby!"

Antoine lowered his porcelain cup back onto the saucer, a long, satisfied sigh escaping him. He looked like a man who had just found the only quiet spot in a noisy world.

"Ah, as always, Kazuhiro," Antoine said, his voice calm but carrying that weight of someone you don't want to mess with. "You've got the best pour in town."

Kazuhiro didn't look up immediately, his hands busy drying a glass behind the bar. He wasn't some frail old-timer; he had that sturdy, relaxed energy of a guy who had seen it all and just wanted to make a decent cup of coffee.

"Glad to hear it, Antoine," Kazuhiro replied, his tone casual. "Prepped it exactly the way you like it. Figured if it isn't broken, don't fix it." He set the glass down and leaned against the counter. "I heard a rumor you're heading out of town soon. Just a change of scenery, or something more official?"

"A bit of both," Antoine replied, adjusting his top hat slightly. "A few loose ends that won't tie themselves. But don't worry, I'll be back before you run out of these beans."

Kazuhiro finished drying a glass and slotted it into its spot on the shelf, leaning his elbows on the bar as he focused back on Antoine. "So, where's this trip actually taking you? Visiting family, or is this more of that 'top secret' business you're always into?" He sounded genuinely curious, the kind of easy prodding you do with someone who's been sitting in the same stool for years.

Antoine took one last slow sip, a small, knowing smile tugging at his lips. "Just a little something I need to look into. Business, officially—but it's a personal itch I've got to scratch." He remained perfectly composed, his voice smooth and untroubled.

"Fair enough," Kazuhiro said, waving a hand dismissively. "I'm not gonna push. Last thing I need is to scare off my most consistent customer. I figure you'll spill the details once you're back in that chair anyway." He was relaxed, enjoying the quiet lull of the shop while they were still the only two souls inside.

"Most likely," Antoine laughed, finally draining the last of his cup before sliding off the stool. "No need to worry, my friend. You'll hear the story sooner than you think."

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a few bills, and slid them onto the counter alongside a generous tip. He adjusted his hat and gave the wood a light, parting tap. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to get moving. Thanks for the brew, Kazuhiro. I'll see you tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow," Kazuhiro replied, glancing at the tip with a nod of thanks. "Take it easy out there."

Antoine didn't look back, but he raised a hand in a silent gesture of appreciation for the talk and the coffee as he made his way toward the door.

Just as Antoine reached the door, the bell gave a sharp jingle as it swung inward. Itsuki practically burst inside, nearly clipping Antoine with the frame. Antoine flinched back just an inch, his reflexes sharp, but he kept his cool and stepped back to a safe distance without losing his composure.

"Oh! Crap—my bad! So sorry about that!" Itsuki blurted out, looking genuinely bothered that he'd almost flattened a stranger.

"No worries," Antoine replied smoothly, his voice level. He stepped past as Itsuki held the door open for him, playing the part of the polite, if slightly chaotic, teenager.

But as they crossed paths, the air seemed to shift. Takumi, standing just a step behind Itsuki, felt a strange, jarring sensation crawl up his spine—something he couldn't quite put a finger on. Antoine's eyes locked onto his for a split second, a heavy, silent look that felt far too intentional to be a coincidence. Then, without a single word, the man continued out into the street.

The exchange lasted only a heartbeat, but for Takumi, it felt like the world had briefly gone off its axis.

Itsuki stomped inside, looking all energetic and proud—honestly, the guy was radiating enough confidence for three people. "Good day to you!" he bellowed toward the bar.

Kazuhiro didn't even flinch, but he did let out a slow, weary sigh. He remained calm and laid-back, though he was clearly a little irritated by Itsuki's complete lack of a volume knob.

"Keep it down," Kazuhiro said, his voice flat and steady. "If you're here for coffee, try using a normal tone." He said it with the tone of a man who already knew his advice was falling on deaf ears.

"Yeah, yeah, I gotcha!" Itsuki chirped, though he didn't actually get any quieter. He bumped Takumi's shoulder and nudged him toward the stools, leaning in to whisper—which, for Itsuki, was still a stage-whisper. "See? Empty as usual, Taki! No eavesdroppers, just us, bro. Plus, we can drink whatever we want!"
