Chapter 16 - Cemeteries are always scary

yumiel listened a little longer. If she could learn a bit more about this man, that worked for her. She still held some resentment from last time.

« Don't talk to me about him! Next time we'll get him. »

« Next time? It's already the second time he's come, and let me remind you of the number of deaths we report. »

« Alright, leave me alone, next time we'll get him. »

« NO, you don't understand, we can't make enemies of all these monsters, we should ask for help. »

« Help? Oh yes, AND WHO DO YOU WANT TO ASK FOR HELP, HUH!? TELL ME! »

yumiel, perched on the roof, smiled. She preferred to watch them all die. Well, to be exact, she planned to kill them all, and that hadn't changed. But if she allied with them to kill this man, she could kill the metal man more easily, plus all the people here.

After thinking about it, she decided to help them only against this man, climbing down from the roof and knocking on the door again. It took barely a few seconds before he opened it. Surprise was visible on their faces. yumiel didn't mind, stepping into the house and looking for something to write with.

« You here? Why did you come back? » The man with the scar pointed his weapon at yumiel. « Tell us why you came back, monster. »

This situation made yumiel laugh. « Excuse me, but if I wanted to kill you, I would've already done it. I heard your conversation, I'm ready to help you against this metal monster. But on two conditions. »

The two looked at each other, surprised by the sudden proposal. The man eventually lowered his weapon, and his wife was the first to speak.

« What kind of conditions are you talking about? »

« First, I want his body. And second, that you leave. This place— for all the people you delivered to certain death, dare to face the same fate, and I will help you. »

The man started laughing. « Do you really think we're going to leave here and then ally with a monster? Don't make me laugh. »

« I think you're the one who doesn't understand, either you clear out and I help you, or you get ready to face two monsters. »

The man snickered when he heard yumiel threaten them.

« Can we think about it? »

yumiel wrote her phone number on a piece of paper she found before walking toward them and handing it over.

« If tomorrow you're still here, then consider us enemies. »

yumiel left immediately. Jumping from roof to roof, she noticed the men starting to block the street. Using overturned cars, building watchtowers, barricaded walls— it made her smile; if so little was enough to stop them, she wouldn't take as many risks.

What surprised yumiel the most was that in this group of around a hundred people, none had a system, meaning none had transformed. Yet the system said it transformed 50% of the population. Normally, that's one in two.

Well, that wasn't her priority. Finding Morgane, Mathis, and her father was far more important. The cemetery was several kilometers from where they were.

yumiel hurried. Jumping from roof to roof, yumiel's physical abilities allowed her to jump more than 15 meters without much effort, letting her reach the cemetery as quickly as possible.

Sometimes she saw people fighting in the streets, others crying in grief, or even people hanging from lampposts. The world is cruel. yumiel paid it no mind. To her, it had always been cruel; today people could truly see its face.

The cemetery was in front of her. Climbing down from the rooftops and continuing on foot. A kind of thick fog hovered over the cemetery, a smell of petrified corpse wafting out. Her senses alerted her, her hair stood on end. Yes, she knew this feeling. Behind this sort of fog, there was something.

yumiel crossed the dilapidated gate, claw or blade marks visible. It was hard to tell; the gate no longer fully resembled a gate. The walls were destroyed, dilapidated, missing bricks.

yumiel advanced slowly. Despite the thick fog, it didn't take her long to notice that every grave was open, with the corpse placed in front of it. It was surprising, as if someone had opened each grave, placed the corpse in front, and left.

yumiel didn't really feel comfortable in this environment, but she had no choice. At least she spotted a mausoleum. Climbing to the top and opening her senses.

She searched for the slightest trace of a person. She was shocked when she realized the size of the cemetery, but above all the staggering number of vibrations she could sense. Checking everything would've taken her a long time; she focused on vibrations from two or three people.

Heading toward the first vibration, she discovered a corpse hanging from a recently dead tree. Right next to it, a dead man. yumiel quickly examined their corpses. The first, hanging from the tree, had nothing special except the crows eating him, which must have created the vibrations. However, the second was another case entirely.

He was literally missing his brain. A hole on top of the skull with nothing inside, his brain gone. yumiel's method for becoming stronger was savage, but this was another level.

She didn't want to linger on it, moving on, leaving that place for other vibrations nearby. After checking several locations, it was always the same: crows eating the unearthed corpses, some missing their brains.

She prayed that Mathis and Morgane were alright before wondering: « But where on earth have I ended up this time? »
