Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: When the Rift Pushes Back

Lucien laughed.

"Oh, come on," he said. "You're going to have to do better than that."

The thrill hit him fully then.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Excitement.

He felt alive in a way he hadn't before, his senses sharp, his thoughts clear. Every movement Lyra made fed into him through their bond. He knew where she was without looking, knew when she was about to move before she did.

They flowed together.

"Left," he said.

Lyra vanished and reappeared, Static Arc chaining through the wolf's hind legs.

"Again."

She did.

The Dire Wolf adapted quickly, rolling with the strikes, using its tail and body to disperse some of the energy. It lunged toward Lyra instead, jaws snapping.

"Too slow," Lucien said.

Lyra blurred back, Phantom Rush carrying her clear as Lucien stepped in, driving his dagger toward the wolf's eye.

It twisted at the last second, blade scraping bone instead of piercing.

The wolf countered with Crushing Bite.

Lucien felt the wind shift and threw himself backward. The jaws slammed shut where his torso had been, the impact cracking the ground.

He came up in a crouch, breathing hard now, grin wide.

"Now that's more like it."

Lyra's excitement flooded through him, bright and fierce.

As they pressed with the advantage.

Lucien dictated the rhythm, calling out commands with sharp clarity. And Lyra executed flawlessly, Static Arc softening, Earthen Pulse destabilizing, Phantom Rush repositioning her again and again.

The Dire Wolf fought back viciously, adapting, striking with precision, but it was always a step behind.

Lucien could feel it.

The moment it started to lag.

"Alright," he said softly. "Let's finish this."

His will flowed through the bond, clear and focused.

Lyra understood immediately.

She shot forward, Phantom Rush carrying her straight past the wolf as Lucien sprinted in from the opposite side.

"Static Arc," he said. "Full release."

Lightning erupted.

The chain struck the wolf's spine, then looped back into itself, locking the beast in place as its muscles seized.

Lucien didn't hesitate.

He leapt, driving his dagger down through the weakened gap at the base of the skull.

The Dire Wolf let out one final, broken snarl before collapsing, its body shuddering once before going still.

Silence fell.

Lucien landed and straightened, chest rising and falling as the adrenaline slowly bled away.

He let out a breath and laughed quietly.

"Good fight," he said, glancing at the corpse. "But not good enough."

The system responded immediately.

▒░ [Rift Beast Slain] ░▒▓

Essence Acquired: +500 EP

▒░ [Total Stored Essence Points Updated] ░▒▓

Lucien barely had time to register it before another pulse rippled through Lyra.

▒░ [Adaptive Essence Trait Activated] ░▒▓

Analyzing Essence: D Rank

Result: Compatible Trait Detected

▒░ [Skill Variant Created: Predator's Step] ░▒▓

Effect: Short range movement becomes quieter and faster after a successful dodge. Brief damage boost on next strike.

Lucien's eyes widened slightly.

"That's… nasty," he said, impressed. "I like it."

Lyra practically vibrated with excitement, circling him before pressing against his side.

▒░ [Resonance Link Increased] ░▒▓

+2%

▒░ [Current Resonance Level: 57%] ░▒▓

Lucien felt it settle into him, warm and steady.

They stood there for a moment longer, catching their breath, enjoying the quiet victory.

Then Lucien exhaled and nodded toward the path ahead.

"Alright," he said. "That was fun, but let's not push our luck."

Lyra hummed in agreement as they turned toward the anchor point.

The Rift was still dangerous.

But for now, they had survived. Or so he thought.

Lucien had just turned his back to leave when Lyra froze.

Not stiff, not alarmed the way she had been before, but sharply focused. The feeling hit him through their bond a breath later, cold and immediate.

Too close.

He stopped mid step. "What is it?"

Lyra drifted forward slightly, her glow tightening as if drawn toward something unseen. The sensation she sent him wasn't vague this time. It was pressure, layered and wrong, like the Rift itself had leaned closer.

Before he could respond, the system chimed, once, then again, then again.

▒░ [Warning: Spatial Disturbance Detected] ░▒▓

▒░ [Multiple Rift Tears Forming] ░▒▓

▒░ [Proximity Alert: Extremely Close] ░▒▓

Lucien exhaled sharply. "You've got to be kidding me."

The ground trembled faintly. Not enough to throw him off balance, but enough to make it clear this wasn't imagination. The Rift wasn't calming down. If anything, it felt like it was pushing back.

Another alert followed, harsher than the rest.

▒░ [Threat Assessment Update] ░▒▓

Detected Entities: D Rank Rift Beasts

Count: Multiple

Estimated Time to Contact: Short

Lucien clicked his tongue and rubbed his temple. "So it's one of those days."

Lyra hovered closer, her presence steady despite the danger closing in. She wasn't afraid. If anything, she felt sharp, ready.

He straightened slowly, eyes scanning the terrain as shapes began to emerge from the warped air ahead. One tear split open, then another, jagged edges glowing faintly as figures pushed through.

Different silhouettes. Different sizes.

Predators.

He could feel them notice him, their attention snapping toward his position all at once. The air thickened with intent as their strides picked up, claws digging into the ground, growls low and violent.

Lucien felt the familiar prickle along his spine. Not panic. Awareness.

Then the system chimed again, but this time the tone was different.

▒░ [Soulbinder System: Side Quest Update] ░▒▓

The interface unfolded before him.

▒░ [Side Quest — Emergent Response] ░▒▓

Quest Name: Echoes of the Living

The description flashed briefly, then faded, replaced by a clean confirmation.

▒░ [Quest Completion Confirmed] ░▒▓

All objectives met.

The next line made Lucien's brows lift.

▒░ [Bonus Essence Applied]

Total Bonus Gained: +6500 EP ]░▒▓

The essence surged into him like a tide, warm and heavy. Lucien sucked in a breath, feeling the weight of it settle, the system recalculating quietly in the background.

For a moment, the threat around him seemed distant.

He laughed, low and disbelieving. "So that's what this was about."

Whatever was happening at the anchor point, whatever chaos had drawn this many beasts out, the system had already paid him for surviving it. That realization did something to him.

The edge of tension cracked and something else slid in beneath it.

Excitement.

Lucien rolled his shoulders and looked back at the approaching D ranks. His pulse was steady. His mind was clear.

"I guess we're not running anymore," he said.
