Chapter—The Shadow Among Us
The golden shimmer of the **Retaliating Shield** flickered in the green-lit gloom of the Minakawa Cave. **Auron** stood firm, his breathing heavy within the silver mask. On the ground, his friends—**Liod, Uno, Shuri, Kael, and Chika**—groaned as the impact of their own reflected power rattled their bones. But the nightmare wouldn't end. Despite the bruises and the sheer logic of their own defeat, they began to stand again.
Their eyes remained milky white, devoid of soul. They moved like rusted machinery being forced into gear.
"Stop!" Auron shouted, his voice echoing with a desperate authority. "Liod! Uno! Look at me! You're hurting yourselves! Every blow you strike at this shield is a blow against your own bodies! We were just laughing... we were eating together at the waterfall! Don't let this thing make you forget who you are!"
But the friends he had shared a barbecue with only hours ago looked at him as if he were a ghost. They raised their hands again, their auras sparking with a sickly, forced energy. Auron looked toward **Marin**, who was struggling on her knees, her teeth gritted as she tried to maintain her fragile grip on her own mind.
"Marin, what do we do?" Auron whispered, his tactical mind hitting a brick wall. "I can't keep reflecting them forever. Their bodies will break."
Suddenly, a slow, rhythmic **CLAP... CLAP... CLAP...** erupted from the back of the chamber.
The sound was chillingly casual.
A sound came, "I not expected you can keep them in control without hurting them."
In an instant, the five manipulated friends stopped their movement. They didn't just stop; they turned in unison and dropped to one knee, giving a rigid, seated salute toward the darkness of the **Minakawa Den**.
"Who's there?" Auron roared, his indigo aura flaring. "The Devino? Or just another puppet?"
A figure stepped out from the shadows. It was draped in a cloak that seemed to drink the torchlight, making its true form impossible to distinguish. A voice, smooth as silk but cold as a grave, drifted through the air.
"Yes... I am the **Devino**," the figure replied. "Though 'God' is such a local term. I prefer something more universal."
"What do you want with my friends?" Auron demanded, his staff glowing. "What are you?"
The figure let out a low, mocking laugh. "You still don't know? How disappointing. I am a **Devil**. I am the architect of the Nodes you've been so diligently 'cleansing.' I sent them to test the fences, to see if the world was ready. And now... I feel so poor for you, Auron. To be so strong, yet so blind."
The Devino stepped closer, the air around it warping. "Let me tell you something as a parting gift. I am not just a distant king. I am one of *them*. I am very close to you. Closer than you could ever imagine."
Auron's heart plummeted. "I should have guessed by the name... you're the source. I'll defeat you right here and take them back!"
"What's the hurry?" the Devino said, waving a hand dismissively. "If you want to defeat me, come to my base. This cave? This is just a villa for me—a place to spend a weekend and collect my **Sokagues**. My true base is the place where I have already taken the life and form of someone you know."
"Wait!" Auron initiated a dash, a silver blur of speed intended to strike the figure's heart, but his staff passed through the Devino as if it were made of smoke.
"It is useless to attack ,where i am rarely there," the Devino sneered.
The dark tentacles from the void behind the figure began to wrap around the five kneeling friends. Marin, seeing her friends being pulled into the darkness, found a surge of primal anger. She broke her internal silence with a scream and launched herself at the Devino, her dark blue aura erupting in a desperate strike.
"Marin, no! Stay back!" Auron reached for her, but the Devino's projection suddenly solidified. A black, clawed hand grabbed Auron and Marin by the throat, hoisting the armored hero into the air.
"You are strong," the Devino whispered into Marin's ear, the breath smelling of ancient rot. "To deny my possession for this long... you are truly the 'Unique' heir. But you cant brake it again."
Auron watched in horror as a pulse of dark energy traveled from the Devino's hand into Marin. Her golden eyes, which had just begun to clear, snapped back into the milky void. She stopped her attack mid-air and landed softly, kneeling beside the others.
Auron's blood boiled. The sheer helplessness of the moment shattered his composure. "GIVE THEM BACK!"
He began to strike at the Devino with raw, uncalculated fury. He swung his staff, fired aura bolts, and lashed out with his indigo energy, but the Devil dodged every strike with a sickening, effortless grace. It was like a man playing with a child.
"You are just a kid to me, Auron," the Devino said, finally landing a palm strike to Auron's chest. "If you want to save your friends, you have to find me first. Look for me among your 'close ones.' See who has changed. See who is wearing a mask better than yours."
The Devino unleashed a massive blast of dark energy. Auron was thrown backward .The last thing he saw before the world turned black was Marin and the others being pulled into the deep, dark void of the Minakawa Den.
When Auron finally opened his eyes, the damp, mossy smell of the cave was gone. He was met with a sterile, blinding whiteness and the hum of high-tech machinery.
He bolted upright, his chest throbbing with a phantom pain. "Marin! Shuri!"
"Easy, Auron. You're safe."
Auron turned, his eyes wide with terror. Standing by his bed were **Evelyn** and **Kaizen**. He wasn't in the village. He was back at the Global Council's medical wing in Tokyo.
"Are you alright?" Evelyn asked, her voice full of genuine concern. "A recovery team found you unconscious near Minkawa cave. You were in a state of total neural shock."
Auron stared at her, then at Kaizen. His mind was a storm of horror. The Devino's words echoed in his skull like a death knell: *I am in the mid of us... one of your close ones.*
"What happened to the cave?" Auron asked, his voice trembling. "How did I get to this state? Where are the others?"
Kaizen crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. "The cave was empty when the scouts arrived. There was no sign of Liod, Uno, or the girls. Just you, lying in the dirt with your armor pulverized. You've been out for three days."
Auron felt a cold sweat break across his brow. He looked at Kaizen—his idol, the man he had modeled his hero persona after. Was it him? Was the Devil wearing Kaizen's skin? Or was it Evelyn?
"I... I need a little bit of time," Auron whispered, clutching his head. "And personal space. Please."
Evelyn looked like she wanted to say more, but Kaizen nodded. "Fine. We'll be in the briefing room when you're ready to talk about what you saw."
As the door slid shut, Auron collapsed back onto the pillows. He was terrified. It wasn't just the physical power of the Devino that haunted him—it was the **Possession**.
The Devil had taken all six of his friends in an instant. It had turned the people he loved into puppets that nearly killed him. And now, the true master was hiding in plain sight.
"He said he is in the midst of us," Auron whispered to the empty room. **Auru** and **Koru** emerged from his shadow, looking equally shaken.
*"Luke... what if he's right?"* Auru asked, her wings drooping. *"If he can possess Liod and Marin, he could possess anyone. He could possess the Council. He could possess everyone."*
Auron looked at his hands. If the Devil could take over anyone at any time, how could he ever trust a plan? How could he ever fight a war when the soldier standing next to him might be the enemy in disguise?
"He's in the midst of us," Auron repeated, his mind racing through every person he knew. Was it one of the professors? One of the other Auramasters? Or was it someone even closer?
The mystery of the Hanazawa mansion had followed him back to the heart of civilization. He was the Unique Auramaster, the last hope for the Earth Shield, but for the first time, he felt utterly alone. To defeat a Devil that hides in the hearts of his friends, he would have to become something more than a hero. He would have to become a hunter.
"I'll find you," Auron hissed into the silence. "And I'll bring them home."
**Is there a specific person you want Auron to suspect first, or should he begin a secret investigation into everyone at the Council?**
