Chapter 88 - The First Offer

The email arrives quietly.

No subject line that demands attention. No congratulatory tone. Just a request for a meeting—informal, exploratory, time-sensitive.

Elian reads it twice.

The name at the bottom is unmistakable. The institution is one that doesn't make early offers without certainty. This isn't opportunity.

It's assumption.

He doesn't tell Juni immediately.

Not out of secrecy—but because he needs time to understand what he's feeling before sharing it. Pride doesn't surface. Relief doesn't either.

Only weight.

When they meet that evening, Juni senses it anyway. Elian's presence is there—but divided, attention turning inward between sentences.

"Something happened," Juni says finally.

Elian nods. "I got an internship offer."

Juni's eyes widen—genuine, warm. "Elian—that's amazing."

Elian smiles, but it doesn't quite land. "It came early."

Juni hesitates, then sits closer. "Is that… good?"

"It's expected," Elian replies. "That's what makes it strange."

They sit together on the couch, knees touching. Juni's happiness doesn't dim—but something thoughtful settles beneath it.

"That kind of offer changes trajectories," Juni says carefully.

Elian nods. "That's what scares me."

Juni rests his head against Elian's shoulder. "I'm happy for you," he says honestly. "And a little… aware."

"Aware of what?" Elian asks.

Juni exhales. "That our timelines might not move at the same speed."

The words land gently, without accusation.

Elian turns toward him. "Does that feel like distance to you?"

Juni thinks about it. "Not yet," he says. "But it feels like… perspective."

They sit quietly, letting the truth exist without trying to resolve it.

Later, as Juni prepares to leave, he pauses at the door. "Just—don't accept things because they arrive easily."

Elian nods. "I won't."

When Juni is gone, Elian returns to the email. He rereads it once more—not as validation, but as a question.

The first offer isn't a reward.

It's a signal.

And as Elian closes his laptop, he understands that from this point on, every step forward will also be a step deeper into visibility.

For him.

For Juni.

For them.

This doesn't end in rupture.

It ends in awareness.

And awareness, Elian knows now, is where real choice begins.
