Chapter 1 - Day 0: Faust

Time: 11:57

Knock knock— Knock knock.

Someone on the other side of the room door was calling out angrily.

"Open the door, Faust!"

Knock knock— Knock knock!

Someone was banging on the door. It must have been around midnight. What could the problem be, other than bandits, thieves, or someone wanting to cause trouble? If it wasn't life-or-death urgent, then it definitely wouldn't be important enough for Faust to get out of bed. Since he was home—in the Coreholder—whoever was at the door had to be one of the Brothers…

Oh, for f— sake.

Faust got up from the bed that was clearly too small for him, his legs sticking out from the end, and headed toward the door.

Even his steps made the floor creak; the wood bent under every step. Whenever he got in or out of bed, it would creak too. But Faust couldn't blame the bed or the floorboards, because:

He was about 2 meters 10 centimeters tall, with a body that resembled a walking pile of muscle. Compared to other boys his age, he was overwhelmingly larger.

Of course, that size came with downsides. Even reaching the door handle meant he had to lower his head slightly…

Creeeeak…

When Faust opened the door, the person standing there was none other than Klint—the one who handled and organized responsibilities.

From the outside, the sight of the two of them standing face to face would've looked strange.

Klint had combed his hair neatly. He wore a high-quality black tie, a clean white shirt, and black jeans with socks. He stood straight at the door.

On the other hand, Faust had no shirt on, his messy black hair hanging over his face, and he wasn't wearing anything other than boxers… which, thankfully, prevented the scene from turning unpleasant.

"Faust…"

A long, irritated glare~

"Hm. Yeah, Klint… what do you want at this hour?"

"What do I want? Hmm, let me think… An unpaid debt in the Winter City? Ring any bells?"

"Huh? Eh? Well. Maybe I don't remember because you just showed up in the middle of the night, woke me up, and started talking about some place I haven't even heard about in months… just a guess."

"Think harder."

Faust placed his hand on his chin.

"Hmm. Get away from my door!"

He gripped the door handle tightly and swung it to shut the door, but Klint quickly placed his hand in the doorway, blocking it.

Oh come on. Is he serious?

After ten seconds of nothing happening, Faust let out a long sigh and poked his head through the remaining gap with a lifeless, annoyed expression.

"What is it!?"

"I don't care how sleepy you are…"

"Tomorrow—"

"In the morning—"

"You're going to that damn city. And you're paying that damn debt!!"

Faust scrunched his face even more, like a spoiled kid who didn't want to do anything.

"Okay okay, just go already ( -_-) "

Klint didn't seem completely convinced, but he knew Faust would drag himself there and take care of it whether he liked it or not. He pulled his hand back, and Faust immediately closed the door and threw himself back onto the bed…

Creeeak…

Klint's angry, fading footsteps made it clear he'd finally walked away.

Hmph. Work in the Winter City… as if there's no one else left to send. But whatever…

"Tomorrow's going to be a long day."
