Chapter 20 - Sloth (3)

"That's... How do you even deal with such a thing?"

Tethy just gave a soft little chuckle at William's question.

"You see, ze zing is... Doe doesn't actually manually activate her Conviction, and it doesn't affect two things."

This piqued his interest even more, while Lerna was just having a hard time understanding everything.

"Living beings and zings always in a state of change because of a living being. It's vhy our clothes don't just stay in place."

The last part made Lerna blush at the thought, she didn't even realize that might've been possible...

This left William in deep thought... How did this girl even live in this place? It didn't make sense, especially with how young she was and all the information he had, how did this happen..?

Tethy, noticing his thoughts, only let out a short sigh before finally, she saw the house in the distance.

Door wide open, inviting anyone to come in, though the door was steady and never-moving, as if wind didn't even exist for it.

Her eyes never left the entrance... She's been here so many times yet, even with her Conviction, she couldn't feel anything from the girl inside.

She decided to not focus on that for now however and just focus on the fact that she still needed to guide the two journalists through here.

"Ve're here." She stated the moment they got close, drawing the eyes of the two to the open doorway as well.

Without any warning, Tethy would walk forward, and then try to move the door.

Even with her towering frame, she seemed to be completely unable to...

"Wha..? Is that door cemented into the ground?" Lerna asked, though she already had an answer that... Would terrify her.

Tethy shook her head, causing William to let out a groan, because he knew already from context clues.

"Her field gets stronger the closer we are, if we could change things from farther away and they'd revert back, now that we're closer..."

"Nothing changes at all." Tethy completed his thought process, confirming it before she walked back towards them.

...

Really? Miss Farah? This was the easiest one? He shuddered at the thought of what the others might be if THIS was the easiest one.

While William was having his own little breakdown, Lerna was... Curious. For some reason, the mark on her thigh started to glow... Almost feeling a sort of kinship to whatever was inside of that house.

Lerna moved towards the house, almost unconsciously as she made it to the doorway.

Tethy noticed of course, but she didn't exactly stop Lerna, it wasn't dangerous, after all, even inflicting harm was impossible in this place, so she had no problems with just letting Lerna go first.

William was too preoccupied deciding on if he'll respected his boss more or if he'd hate her more after this whole thing happened.

As Lerna walked inside she was greeted by an unassuming and regular living room, with only one being sat on the couch.

She recognized her from pictures, Purple hair, small body, and ears of a rabbit on the top of her head.

She stared blankly in front of her, not even giving a glance at the person who just intruded in her home.

In-between her eyes was a dimly glowing mark of a broken clock, the shine barely noticeable, but Lerna noticed after she got closer.

No doubt about it, this was Doe Peace.

"Huh..." Even as Lerna walked closer, Doe didn't move, though she couldn't help but feel some weird kinship with her.

Even if she just met the girl, Lerna's conviction was very emotion based, so she had a better understanding of emotions than most other people.

This included emotions of others, and Doe was... Feeling none.

Lerna even pinched the girl's cheek to see if she would respond, she didn't, not even small squeak or an eye movement.

She just kept staring blankly, which made Lerna start to think if this girl was a statue, because there was no way she didn't blink, it's been over 5 minutes after all, she should need to blink, right?

Even so... Lerna couldn't shake off that feeling, which left her extremely confused about everything.

Why would she feel kinship with a girl she literally just met? And one who didn't even notice her? This was so weird...

"She's like zat, never paid attention to me once." Said Tethy from the doorway.

This startled Lerna which caused her to let out a yelp and throw the nearest object at Tethy, or try, she couldn't even lift up the pillow on the couch.

"How... Long have you been there?" Lerna asked, feeling embarrassed.

Tethy chuckled, this was honestly reminding her of the kids back home... It was adorable.

"Depends, vhat did you vant me to see?" Tethy answered, slowly making her way towards the two other girls. "Cause you seemed a bit... Frustrated."

The green haired girl just let out a sigh, unable to combat what the taller girl said. Lerna sat down on the couch next to Doe Peace, which Doe still didn't react to.

"I don't know... I guess I'm just weird."

Before Lerna could activate her Conviction accidentally, Tethy said a few words. "Everyone's a bit veird, nothing vrong vith zat."

Lerna chuckled, watching as the taller girl sat beside her. "I guess you're right..."

If you're wondering where William is, he's still coping and seething.
