Chapter 28 - The Secrets Buried in Blood Julia

The world felt different after my father's last words.Sophia Bennett. My mother.

I kept repeating the name silently, like if I said it enough times, it would suddenly make sense. But everything inside me was chaos.

Alan stayed beside me the whole night, refusing to leave even when nurses urged him to. Kai paced outside the room, quietly tense, watching every movement.

By morning, a call came that changed everything.

The executor of the Bennett estate wanted to meet me.

Me.

Not the girl who lived paycheck to paycheck. Not the daughter who had spent nights begging for her father's survival. Not the assistant who hid in shadows.

But the heiress I never knew I was.

I barely had the strength to stand, but Alan insisted on coming, firm hand on the small of my back.Kai insisted too.

So the three of us drove to the Bennett estate — a mansion that rose like a throne carved into reality. Ivy crawled along stark white pillars, a massive iron gate opened with a heavy groan, and the driveway stretched like a path to another world.

My breath hitched."This was… my mother's home?"

Kai exhaled softly. "It's more than a home."

Alan's jaw ticked. "It was a power center. The Bennetts were one of the wealthiest families on the West Coast."

The car stopped at the front entrance.

I felt like my heart might burst.

The doors opened, revealing a grand hallway lined with portraits — Bennetts from generations before. Their eyes all looked the same.

Sharp.Powerful.Untouchable.

A shiver crept down my spine.

A man with silver hair stepped forward, bowing slightly."Miss Julia… I am Mr. Lennox. Your mother's legal advisor for twenty years. I've been waiting for you."

I swallowed. "Waiting?"

"Yes."He handed me a sealed envelope. "Your mother left this for you in the event of your father's… passing."

My fingers trembled as I tore it open.

Inside was a handwritten letter — the ink faded but the words fierce.

My Julia,If you are reading this, then your father has protected you until his last breath — just as he promised me he would.

My chest tightened so sharply it hurt.

I did not leave you behind willingly. The Bennetts were not safe for a child. There were threats to the family… to you. Your father raised you far away because it was the only way you would survive.

Survive.The word stabbed me.

But when you come of age… you must return. The estate, the companies, the trust, and the Bennett influence will belong to you. And with it — the truth about our enemies.

Be careful who you trust.Even the ones who love you the most may destroy you without meaning to.

The letter ended there. No signature. No goodbye.

Just a warning.

My hands shook. My vision blurred.

Alan was suddenly behind me, a firm anchor. His voice was low."Julia… breathe."

Kai was at my other side, expression darkening."These enemies… who were they?"

Mr. Lennox cleared his throat."There is more. Follow me."

We walked deep into the mansion until he opened a heavy door hidden behind a bookshelf.

Inside were documents, photos, and files stacked from floor to ceiling.

Alan's posture stiffened.Kai stepped in first, scanning the walls.

"These are… surveillance photos," he muttered.

My stomach dropped.

Pictures of me.Growing up.At school.Playing in the park.

"Oh my god…" I whispered. "They were watching me? For how long?"

Mr. Lennox folded his hands. "Your mother feared her enemies would target you. She hired professionals to keep watch — unseen, but always there."

Alan cursed under his breath. "She wasn't paranoid. Someone really was targeting them."

Kai pulled a file from a shelf — stamped with a dark red seal.

"Julia," he said softly. "This has your father's handwriting."

My legs nearly gave out.

Alan grabbed my waist instantly. "You're not falling."

I opened the file.

Inside was my father's confession.

Julia,If you are reading this, then I am gone. And the truth must belong to you now.

Your mother didn't die in an accident.

My heart stopped.

She was killed.

The room tilted.

The Bennetts were betrayed from inside the family. Someone wanted the fortune, the power — and you were targeted as well.

I choked on air.

Alan's grip tightened.

Kai's face hardened with a fire I'd never seen.

I left the Bennett world to raise you safely. But they will come for you now that you're of age. Alan, Kai… I trust that one of them will protect you when the time comes.

I froze.

He wrote their names. Both of their names.

Alan's hand slowly slid over mine.

"You're not facing this alone," he whispered.

Kai stepped closer, jaw tense."Your father trusted us for a reason. We'll protect you — whatever it takes."

I stared between them, heart pounding, the truth crashing into me like a tidal wave.

I wasn't just Julia anymore.

I was a Bennett.An heir.A target.A threat to someone else's power.

And now…my father was dead.My mother was murdered. My enemies were alive. And they were coming.

I folded the letter to my chest, voice trembling.

"What do I do now?"

Alan answered first, voice low, dangerous, and absolutely certain:

"Now, you stay with me."

But Kai stepped forward too, eyes locked with mine.

"And you let me uncover who killed your mother."

My world was breaking apart…but somehow, they were both standing at the pieces' edges, ready to catch me.
