Chapter 79 - ACT THREE: THE HEART OF THE WORLD

CHAPTER 10: THE CRISIS

The day they were scheduled to activate the anchor network, disaster struck. A massive surge of primal magic erupted from the city, more powerful than anything they'd anticipated. The ground shook, and sand began pouring into the underground chambers as the barriers that had protected the city for thousands of years began to fail.

"It's reacting to our anchors," Kaelen said, his face grim as he worked to stabilize the flow of magic. "It senses the structured magic of the beacons and is pushing back against being contained."

Youssef and his followers arrived at the city entrance, having felt the surge from miles away. "We have to act now," Youssef said to Zara. "If we don't take control of this magic, it will destroy everything."

"No," Zara said firmly. "Taking control would only make it angrier. We have to work with it, not against it."

But the magic was growing more unstable by the minute. The starlight dome above them began to crack, and sand poured in faster. Mira was thrown back by a wave of energy as she tried to calm the water in the Heart of the City. Elias's notes went flying as the chamber shook.

"We can't do this alone," Lina shouted over the roar of shifting earth. "We need everyone – all of us working together."

Zara looked at Youssef, at his followers, at the clan leaders who had come to watch. "She's right," she said. "This isn't about one land or one people. This is about the balance of the entire world. We all have a stake in this."

Slowly, tentatively, people began to move forward – Youssef's followers standing beside Firekeepers, clan leaders working with Skycallers. They formed a circle around the Heart of the City, linking hands, bringing their own magic and their own perspectives to bear on the crisis.
