CHAPTER 7: THE TREATMENT
With the immediate crisis averted, the expedition turned their attention to creating a way to help those affected by magic sickness. Working with the guardians, they developed a treatment that didn't suppress symptoms but helped people learn to move with the changing flow of magic.
"Magic sickness isn't really sickness at all," Kenji explained to the team as they worked in the basin's healing gardens. "It's a mismatch between how people are using magic and how magic is actually flowing. We need to help people adapt."
Zara created grounding techniques that could be adjusted to different environments. Lena developed ways to help people feel the flow of magic rather than trying to control it. Kai taught breathing exercises that helped Firekeepers manage their emotions and focus their energy.
The key, they discovered, was to personalize the treatment for each individual, taking into account their unique magical heritage and their specific symptoms. It was a slow, painstaking process, but it worked. One by one, people who had been struggling with magic sickness began to find balance again.
As they worked, Maya noticed that some of the guardians were hesitant to use the new treatment. They had lived in the basin for so long that they had adapted to its wild magic completely, and they were afraid that the treatment would disrupt their connection to it.
"We're not trying to change you," Maya assured Elora. "We're just trying to help people who haven't had the chance to adapt like you have. We want to give them a choice—to live in harmony with the world, whatever that means for them."
Elora considered this. "Then perhaps we can help too," she said. "We can teach you how to adapt to the magic of the basin, so you can understand what it feels like to live without rules, without boundaries."
The guardians began to share their knowledge, teaching the expedition team how to sense the flow of magic, how to move with it, how to find balance in constant change. It was a challenging process, but it helped the team understand the basin's magic on a deeper level.
By the time they were ready to leave, they had created a treatment for magic sickness that was both effective and respectful of individual differences. They had also learned valuable lessons about the nature of balance and the importance of adapting to change.
As they prepared to depart, Elora presented Maya and Kenji with a gift—a small crystal that pulsed with the basin's wild magic. "This will help you remember what you've learned here," she said. "It will remind you that balance isn't something you achieve once and forget. It's something you must work for every day, in every choice you make."
