Chapter 62 - ACT TWO: THE LOST BASIN

CHAPTER 4: THE EDGE OF THE UNKNOWN

After three weeks of travel, they reached the mountains that surrounded the Lost Basin. The air here felt different—thicker, charged with energy that made their hair stand on end.

"The texts say the basin is hidden by magic," Kenji said, consulting his ancient book. "We won't find it by just walking through the mountains. We have to… let the magic guide us."

He held up the twelve-colored crystal, and it began to glow brighter, pulsing in rhythm with something invisible. "Each of you—focus on your own land's magic. Let it reach out, find its place here."

One by one, the students closed their eyes and focused. Zara felt the earth beneath her feet, warm and solid. Lena felt the cold mountain air, clear and sharp. Kai felt the warmth of hidden fire deep in the rocks.

As their magic combined, the mountains seemed to shift. A path appeared where there had been only rock and ice—a narrow trail leading down into a valley that sparkled with light.

The Lost Basin spread before them like a dream. Lush green plants grew alongside flowers that glowed with inner light. Rivers flowed upward in gentle spirals before cascading down into pools that reflected not just the sky, but other lands entirely—desert dunes, frozen peaks, rolling oceans.

"It's beautiful," Torin whispered, his eyes wide with wonder. "But it's… wrong. Plants don't grow like this. Water doesn't flow like this."

"Not wrong," said a voice from behind them. A woman emerged from the trees, her skin the color of bark and her hair woven with leaves. "Different. This is how magic was meant to flow—free, changing, alive."

She introduced herself as ELORA, leader of the basin's guardians. "We've watched your world change," she said. "We've seen how you've tried to box magic into rules and patterns. But magic isn't meant to be contained. It's meant to move, to adapt, to become whatever the world needs it to be."

"Then why is magic becoming unstable outside?" Maya asked. "People are getting hurt."

Elora's expression grew serious. "Because you've forgotten how to move with magic. You've built your beacons, your traditions, your rules—and they served you well. But the world is changing. Magic is changing. When you try to force it into old patterns, it breaks."
