Chapter 75 - Smarter Wall

The Juggernaut charged, earth ripping under its hooves.

"Angle it!" Riley shouted.

Hayes didn't take it head-on this time.

He and Terror shifted at the last second, shields and stone body turning the Juggernaut's path into a grazing impact. Its horn scraped along Terror's rocky shoulder, sending chips flying instead of driving straight through Hayes' chest.

Even so, the force was brutal.

Stoneback braced behind Jonathan, pushing into their backs like a living wedge. Bramble's rampart glowed bright, vines of light snaking into their boots, anchoring them.

HP bars dipped.

Then Ether's threads flared, redistributing the worst of it into equal, smaller bites. Regeneration followed in gentle ticks.

Hayley used the glancing chart to slip in beside the Juggernaut and carve another Root-Cleave into its rear leg joint. Frostwing dropped a thin Frost Trail under its back foot; it slipped, losing momentum.

"Lumi, mark!" Riley called.

The whelp flared, painting weakpoints in shimmering light.

Riley let fly — Rapid Radiant Lines targeting plates they'd already damaged last time.

Shards flew.

Kalyani's Fire Gecko spat arcs of flame at exposed cracks, superheating stone before Aria slammed it with a Shockstrike, the combo leaving hairline fractures in new plates.

Dot pattered along armour lines like an eight-legged saboteur, dropping tiny venom debuffs wherever she could find purchase.

The Juggernaut roared, turning, this time targeting the backline.

Storm Armor crackled.

Storm Pulse flared again.

Riley's storm-resist potion ticked.

He grinned.

"Come on," he murmured. "Let's dance."

Arcial blurred forward.

Lightning vs lightning.

The Juggernaut tried a stomp again — smaller Groundquake ripples this time.

Ether flung a desperate Phase Mend at Hayley just as a shockwave ripped under her. She flickered, passed through the worst of it, landed in a roll, and came up grinning.

"Love you!" Hayley shouted.

Ether flashed pink.

Rezion and Frostwing focused entirely on its feet — Frost Trail, small shards, slowing its repositioning.

Kalyani and her Gecko peppered its face and flanks with constant irritation.

The Juggernaut swung its head at Aria.

"NOPE!" she yelped, diving over a crack in the ground. Dot flung a thread up to catch a spur of stone and swung them both out of the way like the most horrifying grappling hook on earth.

All that noise and light gave Arcial an opening.

He streaked along the Juggernaut's side, claws crackling with Lightning.

> Claw Strike. Claw Strike. Static stacks building.

Every swipe left more little Static icons along opened plates.

"Charged Draw!" Riley called.

Arcial's passive kicked in — every new hit on Static-stacked spots dealt burstier damage, little critical sparks popping.

The Juggernaut tried to shake him off with a short-range Storm Pulse, but Arcial's new Storm Instinct shimmered around him — he twisted midair, shedding the worst of it, claws dragging a sparkling line along the beast's neck.

HP: 72%… 68%… 63%…

"Chain it!" Riley shouted.

Lumi lit up half a dozen of those Static icons with Guiding Glow.

Riley drew deep, feeling Dawnstring thrum.

"Chain Shot!"

The arrow leapt from mark to mark, every jump detonating another internal plate like a shaped charge.

The Juggernaut shrieked, all four legs buckling for a heartbeat.

Hayes saw it.

"PUSH!" he roared.

Terror slammed into its shoulder. Stoneback threw its whole stubby body at an ankle. Bramble pounced, claws digging into its flank.

They didn't knock it over.

But they stopped it from running.

At least for now.

The Juggernaut seemed to realise brute force wasn't enough.

Lightning retreated from its outer plates, sinking inward. Its armour dulled, but the glow under its skin intensified.

Adaptive Hide.

Riley grimaced. "It's shifting to internalisation. Watch for—"

The Juggernaut exploded forward in a short, brutal micro-charge, ignoring collision physics in a way that made Riley deeply suspicious of the devs' sense of humour.

It slammed into Hayes and Terror, then twisted mid-impact to slam its hindquarters into Jonathan and Stoneback.

Everyone went flying.

Ether screeched (musically, but still a screech) and burned Aether Bloom on cooldown, flooding them with soft healing while her threads frayed under the strain.

HP bars bounced in the red, then back into orange.

For one horrible second, the Juggernaut lined up on Sofia again, lightning horns building.

"NOT AGAIN!" Aria yelled.

She sprinted toward it this time, Dot launching off her head to climb for the eyes. The Juggernaut shook its head, momentarily distracted by spiteful spider venom.

Riley moved without thinking.

"Arcial, up!"

The lynx leapt, landing halfway up the Juggernaut's neck, claws digging into the softened plates.

Riley sighted down Dawnstring.

"Nova volley," he muttered.

He didn't have a skill called that.

The system didn't care.

Dawnburst's pattern flourished; Stormtrace sang in his veins; Lumi flooded his aim with a dozen guiding lines.

Arrows of light and storm poured out, falling in a tight circle around the beast's head and shoulders. Every impact sent lightning bouncing along its own conduits, frying circuits it had tried to hide.

HP: 30%… 22%… 17%…

The Juggernaut screamed and lurched, but its legs wobbled.

Stoneback — limping, cracked — forced itself up beside Jonathan.

With a tiny, furious bark, it summoned its first real skill:

> Mini Guard Wall — Activated.

A half-sized stone bulwark erupted from the ground in front of them just in time to catch a desperate tail-swipe, saving the back line from being swatted into paste.

"YES, LITTLE ROCK!" Aria screamed.

Hayley, panting, slid in under the raised tail, sword glowing.

"FOR DAWNVIEW!"

She carved through an exposed tendon.

The Juggernaut dropped to one knee.

Ether threw every last drop of cooldown into Hayes as he charged one final time, shield glowing with storm and verdant light both, Terror stomping at his side.

Riley saw the line.

Weak points from last time, fresh cracks from this time, Arcial's Static marks, Dot's venom, Gecko's scorch, Frostwing's brittle patches… all of it connected in a thin, shimmering path in his vision.

He drew one last arrow.

Everything in him tightened.

"Lumi," he whispered.

The whelp glowed.

"Arcial."

The lynx snarled, claws sinking deeper.

"Down."

He released.

The arrow hit Arcial's mark.

Arcial bit down on it.

Lightning and light turned inside out.

For a heartbeat, he was a living conduit.

The blast ripped through the Juggernaut's neck joint from the inside, following every fracture line, every weakness, then bursting out through its chest in a spear of stormlight.

The world went white.

Then quiet.

Then—

> STORMBACK JUGGERNAUT — DEFEATED

The beast crashed to the ground hard enough to shake the crater.

Everyone stood very, very still.

Then the system exploded.

> RARE BOSS SLAIN! Major Contribution: Party Grant Loot rolling…

Glowing items burst into the air like fireworks.

Stormback Heart Core (Unique)

Stormback Plates times 4

Azure Heart Shard times2

Stormfront Sigil — Dawnview Route

Gold: 3.4

Stormfront Renown: +900

Title: Stormbreakers of Dawnview (Party)

Aria fell over.

"WE'RE RICH AND FAMOUS—"

Ether tapped her once, more out of habit than scolding.

Dot crawled down to pat her nose like, yes, but also you nearly died six times.

Riley's gaze fixed on one particular item:

> Stormfront Sigil — Dawnview Route A route pass engraved with Azure stormlight. Grants early access to restricted caravan paths. Unlocks special route: Dawnview → Emberton (Limited Seats)

Emberton.

His brain clicked.

Trade hub. Corp scouts. Edward.

He closed his fingers around the sigil.

Hayes whistled. "That looks… important."

"Yeah," Riley said, heart thudding.

"It is."

Arcial padded up to him, fur still crackling, eyes bright. A new skill notification hovered over the lynx's icon:

> New Skill: Chain Lightning (Burst) Rank increased: Storm Instinct → Moderate.

The stormcat had levelled.

So had they.

Sofia slumped to her knees, Ether collapsing against her neck in tired victory.

Hayley flopped onto Bramble. Jonathan hugged Stoneback and Tiger both. Rezion just lay on his back in the ash, Frostwing fluttering circles over his head. Kalyani sprawled out, Fire Gecko sprawled upside-down on her stomach like a dead ember.

Aria stared up at the dissipating storm clouds.

"Hey, Riley?" she called weakly.

"Yeah?"

"If this game really lets us pay the mortgage…"

"Yeah?"

"…I'll let Lumi bonk me instead of Ether. Once. As a treat."

Lumi sparkled, deeply honoured.

Riley laughed.

Exhausted.

Relieved.

Determined.

He looked at the sigil again.

Dawnview to Emberton, early access.

A first step out of the Wilds.

A step toward Edward.

And maybe… toward fixing what their bank thought was already broken.

"Alright," he said softly, to team and spirits and storm alike.

"Next stop: Emberton."

The stormfront clouds finally began to thin.

The legend — and the plan — moved on.
