Chapter 73 - Aftershocks & Opportunities

They didn't speak much on the walk back.

Not because morale was low.

But because every single person — and spirit — was exhausted.

Stormfront energy hummed through the air like static after a downed power line, brushing against their armor, their hair, their spirits' auras. The forest smelled ionized, like the Wilds themselves were still trembling from the Juggernaut's escape.

Bramble was limping.

Stoneback was limping.

Hayes might have been limping, though he pretended not to.

Arcial stalked beside Riley with stiff shoulders and murder still in his golden eyes.

Ether sat small and quiet on Sofia's shoulder, her wings dim but steady. Every few steps she leaned against Sofia like she needed grounding.

Dot rode on Aria's head like a judgmental crown of fuzzy legs.

Riley kept pace at the front. Dawnstring hummed faintly on his back — still holding echoes of the Overcharge he'd pulled off to save Sofia.

Every step felt heavy, but none of them were defeated.

Just wrung out.

Used.

Alive.

The moment Dawnview's wooden gates came into view, two guards straightened up, saluting reflexively.

Then froze.

Because the group that walked toward them was…

…scorched.

…singed.

…covered in cracked armor and dust.

…and accompanied by a VERY irritated lightning lynx pacing so close to Riley that anyone within petting distance would probably die instantly.

The nearest guard swallowed. "S–Stormfront trouble?"

Jonathan answered honestly:

"We picked a fight with the wrong wall."

The other guard frowned. "Did you win?"

Riley shook his head. "Not yet."

Arcial growled low, sparks shooting off his tail tip.

The guard immediately stepped back two full meters.

Aria patted his shoulder on the way through. "Don't worry. He only eats violent criminals."

Ether bonked her lightly.

"—'metaphorically'," Aria corrected.

Dot approved this edit with a tap of her leg.

The workshop doors slammed open the moment they stepped in.

Mira's scream hit first.

"YOU'RE ALL BROKEN—WHAT HAPPENED—OH NO—YOUR ARMOR—JONATHAN, WHY DOES YOUR MONKEY LOOK LIKE IT LOST A BAR FIGHT—WHY IS ARCIAL SEETHING WITH PURE HATRED—WHAT DID YOU DO?!"

Kipp popped up from behind a cauldron, saw the damaged party, gasped—

—and fainted.

Again.

Riley caught him by the collar mid-fall and set him gently in a chair.

Sofia held up both hands. "We're okay, we're okay!"

"We are not okay," Aria said. "I was flung ten feet by a storm cow."

Ether tapped her forehead gently, healing spark drifting down.

Aria sighed. "Fine. We're mostly okay."

Mira rushed through them with professional panic, grabbing cracked gauntlets, dented shields, and smoldering armor plates.

She grabbed Riley's sleeve. "Explain."

Riley set the Stormback Plate Fragment on her workbench.

The entire workshop fell silent.

Mira's pupils dilated. "That's… that's Juggernaut plating."

Kipp shot up from his faint like a resurrected zombie. "A WHAT?!"

Hayes crossed his arms. "Rare boss. Level fifteen. Hits like a runaway building."

Jonathan added, "We made it run."

Kipp screamed.

Mira screeched.

Bramble sneezed, which startled both Rumble and Stoneback.

"It ran? It RAN?!" Mira cried. "You MADE a rare storm beast run?!"

Riley shrugged, deadpan. "It was tired."

Arcial paced behind him, tail still sparking angrily, proving it was HE who was tired of it running.

Mira slapped both hands on the table.

"I need three hours. I can use this plate fragment to reinforce Hayes' shield. Maybe Jonathan's. Maybe the golem. Maybe—"

Hayes gently lowered her hands. "Breathe."

Mira inhaled like she was about to faint again.

Ether floated over and put a calming thread across her forehead.

She calmed instantly.

"…I love you," Mira whispered at Ether.

Ether beamed.

Riley cleared his throat.

"Before we collapse, we need to review."

Everyone gathered in a rough semi-circle, spirits sprawled across the workshop floor. Frostwing perched on Rezion's head like an icy hat. Fire Gecko curled around Kalyani's arm like a warm bracelet. Dot sat on Aria like royalty.

Even Rumble pulled up a stool and sat with dignity.

Riley pointed at the map.

"We made the Juggernaut run. That means three things."

1. It will reform

Bigger. Angrier. With adaptive resistance.

2. It now counts us as 'priority threats.'

Meaning it will actively path toward us if we enter the same region again.

3. Killing it is mandatory if we want the Azure Hollow dungeon's optimal rewards.

Jonathan blinked. "Wait… mandatory?"

Riley nodded. "Stormfront bosses feed the dungeon phases. The more you weaken or defeat, the easier the last section becomes — or the more bonuses you unlock."

Kalyani raised a hand.

"Isn't that… massively unfair for people who aren't insane like us?"

"Yep," Aria said cheerfully.

Riley ignored them.

"The Juggernaut will respawn fully in about twenty hours. Until then, it patrols while regenerating."

Hayley winced. "Meaning tomorrow?"

"Morning," Riley confirmed.

"And tomorrow… we finish it."

A soft chime echoed.

Everyone froze.

Loot window.

Jonathan blinked. "We already got the fragment—"

Rezion pointed. "No, look! New system message!"

> Partial Boss Escape Bonus

Because you dealt more than 60% total damage: All participating spirits gained:

Moderate Storm Resistance + Storm Instinct (Minor) unlocked

Arcial perked up.

Lumi chimed happily.

Frostwing shimmered.

Fire Gecko burped a spark and passed out from excitement.

Aria yelped. "HE SET MY HAIR ON FIRE AGAIN—"

Ether calmly bonked her.

Dot calmly extinguished her hair.

Riley checked Arcial's new passive:

> Storm Instinct (Minor):

Increases dodge chance against storm-element attacks by 6%.

Increases damage against storm-tagged enemies by 4%.

Arcial purred like a burning engine.

Riley smiled faintly. "Not bad."

Then another ping appeared.

A faint storm symbol hovered over the group-map.

Hayes leaned in. "What's that?"

Riley zoomed in.

"A trail."

The system had marked the Juggernaut's escape path.

Not the full route — but enough to trace its likely den or regeneration spot.

A pulsing indicator blinked on the far side of Azure Wilds:

> Stormback Regeneration Zone — Intermittent

High danger / High reward

Timer: 19 hours

Aria stared. "So we know where he's sleeping?"

"Recovering," Riley corrected. "Until tomorrow, he's vulnerable. Not easy — but vulnerable."

Hayes cracked his knuckles.

Hayley grinned.

Jonathan set Stoneback on the table like a mascot of war.

Rezion swallowed. "We uh… really are doing this."

Kalyani smirked. "We're finishing what we started."

Sofia touched Ether gently. "We just need to survive it."

Riley nodded.

"We will."

Arcial growled fiercely.

Lumi flashed.

Bramble roared.

Rumble cracked a stone fist.

Dot raised a leg dramatically.

Aria lifted her fist. "Yeah! Dot raises a leg in solidarity!"

Dot smacked her with the leg.

Aria fell off her chair.

Healing, Repairs, and Preparation

The team scattered into mini-tasks:

Sofia and Ether created recovery rotations for spirits

Mira hammered storm plating into Hayes' and Jonathan's gear

Kipp brewed experimental storm-resist potions, one exploded

Rezion practiced frost control with the Frostwing

Kalyani tried to teach the Fire Gecko not to shoot at Aria and failed

Hayes and Rumble drilled anti-charge positioning

Jonathan trained Stoneback to brace for impacts

Aria sparred Dot and Dot won

Meanwhile, Riley stood outside, Arcial beside him, watching the storm clouds gathering deeper over the Wilds.

Lumi hovered quietly.

"You want a rematch too," Riley murmured.

Arcial growled — low, electric, eager.

Riley felt Dawnstring hum against his back.

Tomorrow wasn't going to be easier.

Tomorrow wasn't going to be safer.

Tomorrow was going to be decisive.

He looked at his lynx.

"Alright," he whispered. "Tomorrow we finish what we started."
