The forest swallowed them as they moved deeper along the amber-lit trail, Luna curled securely in Riley's arms and Lumi perched proudly on his shoulder like he owned the entire realm.
Sunlight speared through the canopy in soft golden beams, catching on drifting motes and leaves. Somewhere in the distance, a bird-spirit called out, its song echoing faintly through the trees.
Aria marched ahead with the force of a derailed train.
"Okay, team, new mission: GET LUNA SWOLE."
Dot clicked in violent agreement, tiny legs flexing like she was ready to bench-press mountains.
Sofia giggled softly. "She's only just been born… don't overwhelm her."
Luna, as if proving Sofia's point, yawned a tiny bell-like yawn and buried her nose briefly into Riley's chest.
Hayes adjusted his shield straps with calm precision. "We'll take it slow. Weak mobs first. No risky pulls."
Hayley nuzzled Bramble, who was latched around her shoulders like a fuzzy backpack. "He agrees."
Bramble grunted in sleepy approval.
Riley smiled… but something tugged at him.
A faint hum.
A ripple of warmth.
A soft vibration running along his back.
He slowed.
The Spirit Bow across his shoulder glowed faintly—threads of pale gold weaving between its carved limbs as though waking from a long sleep.
Sofia noticed first. Her eyes widened. "Riley… your bow is glowing."
Aria whipped around. "OH GOD, IS IT GOING TO EXPLODE?!"
"Aria—" Riley sighed automatically.
But she wasn't wrong about one thing.
The energy was building.
The bow pulsed.
Like a heartbeat. Like it was breathing.
Lumi stiffened a little, then puffed his glow brighter, as if proudly saying finally.
Luna blinked drowsily and tilted her head toward the bow, eyes reflecting the growing light.
A soft chime echoed.
DING—
A system popup materialized in front of Riley's eyes, clean and sharp:
BOND RESONANCE DETECTED.
TWO LIGHT-ASPECT SPIRITS BONDED.
CONDITION MET WEAPON EVOLUTION UNLOCKED.
Aria's jaw dropped.
"EVOLUTION? ALREADY?! Bro, you just gave birth to a star-lizard and your gear is already having a character arc!"
Riley blinked, stunned.
"So… Lumi and Luna together triggered this?"
Lumi puffed his chest out even more, glow flaring smugly.
Luna let out a tiny questioning chirp, clearly having no idea what was happening but happy to be included.
The bow glowed brighter.
The wood shifted—threads tightening and reweaving like living fibers. Inscribed lines along the limbs lit up, constellations connecting across its surface.
Light coalesced along the string, gathering at the grip. Tiny specks of starlight spun, swirling tighter and tighter—
Then—
FLASH.
The glow flared, then faded.
The bow was still there.
But it wasn't the same.
It looked refined. Sleeker. The curves more harmonious, edges sharper, the central grip faintly inlaid with a pattern of miniature stars. Even idle, it shimmered softly, like someone had dipped it in moonlight and let it dry.
A new interface hovered in soft gold:
SPIRIT BOW — SHIMMERSTRING
Current Tier: 2 Bond-Evolved
Unlocked by: Lumi and Luna the Light Pair
+8% Accuracy
+3% Critical Chance
Arrows now manifest as starlit projectiles.
Passive — STAR TRACE
Your next shot after Lumi uses FLASH deals bonus radiant damage.
Aria practically tackled Riley from excitement, grabbing his shoulders.
"DUDE. DUUUUUDE. This is insane. Little Moon-Toddler over there hasn't even learned to walk and your weapon's already evolving?!"
Riley snorted despite himself. "She has legs, Aria. She's just… small."
Luna squeaked indignantly, as if offended at the implication of weakness.
Hayes stepped closer, inspecting the bow carefully but not touching it.
"That's… early," he murmured. "Too early. Most players won't even have their first spirit evolved by now, and you've already evolved equipment based on spirit resonance."
"Some people are just lucky," Hayley said with a grin. "And kind."
Riley shook his head slightly, still processing.
He remembered reading forum threads in his first life.
Rumours of weapons that responded to spirit bonds.
Whispers of builds that needed multiple spirits of the same element.
He'd never seen one in person.
Now he was holding it.
Sofia smiled warmly at him, eyes shining.
"You saved that Wyldlet… and you listened to Lumi. You didn't try to grab power. And now the system is… responding to that."
Riley swallowed.
He hadn't done it for some secret reward. He really hadn't.
But having it come back around like this?
It felt… good.
Lumi chirped proudly, bouncing once on Riley's shoulder.
Luna blinked slowly, then nestled into his arm again, like she'd decided this was all acceptable.
Riley exhaled.
"Alright. Let's test it."
They didn't have to go far.
Just beyond the next curve in the path, the forest floor opened into a small dip—mushroom-capped stumps, ferns, and scattered shimmering leaves.
Leaf-crawlers lurked there. Small spirit-beetle things with leafy backs that rustled when they moved. Weak, perfect for training.
Hayes took point out of habit. "I'll hold aggro if needed."
Riley shook his head. "No, these are perfect for me and Luna. Just cover our backs."
Aria hopped onto a rock.
"Ooooh. LIVE DEMO. Everybody shush. I'm about to rate this attack animation."
Hayley cuddled Bramble closer but stepped aside. "We believe in you, Shimmerstring."
Sofia moved to stand beside Luna, who had been set gently on the moss.
"Watch Riley closely," she whispered to the cub. "This is your partner."
Luna stared ahead with wide silver eyes.
Riley stepped forward and gripped the newly evolved bow.
It felt… different.
Lighter in his hand.
More responsive.
Like it wanted to move.
He drew the string back.
This time, no invisible arrow formed.
A star did.
Pure starlight condensed at the center of the bow, shifting, sharpening, narrowing into a radiant point. A faint trail of light stretched behind it, as though impatient to fly.
Aria squealed. "I WANT THAT. I WANT A LIGHT GUN. RILEY, GIVE ME YOUR BOW."
"No," he said calmly.
He released.
FWSSSSHHH—
The starlight arrow streaked across the clearing, carving a glowing trail behind it.
It struck the closest leaf-crawler square in the center.
POP—
The creature burst into sparkling motes, scattering like confetti.
Hayes whistled softly. "Clean hit. No drift. Very little falloff."
Sofia clasped her hands together. "That was so… beautiful."
Hayley's eyes sparkled. "I want sparkly powers…"
Bramble snorted like he disapproved of glitter.
Aria pointed at Riley like she was accusing him of a crime.
"You are OFFICIALLY the main character of our group."
Riley choked. "Stop saying that."
But deep inside?
It felt like for once, he wasn't behind.
For once, he was ahead.
Lumi hopped down from his shoulder and scampered into position beside him. His glow intensified, eyes narrowing in fierce concentration.
FLASH—
Lumi triggered his ability.
A flare of light erupted, briefly blinding the next cluster of leaf-crawlers. Their little legs flailed in confusion.
A new icon flickered in Riley's HUD:
STAR TRACE — READY
He didn't think.
He just drew and fired.
This arrow felt heavier, more solid. Radiant energy packed tighter into its core.
CRACK—
The shining projectile hit like a tiny meteor, slamming through the first crawler and blasting into the second.
Both burst instantly.
The impact left a faint ring of light where it landed.
Silence.
Then Aria screamed:
"WEAPON. OF. MASS. DESTRUCTION!"
Dot clicked furiously, as if yelling, Let me at something!
Sofia laughed, heart-shaped eyes aimed at Lumi. "You two are amazing together…"
Lumi puffed up, clearly delighted by the praise.
Luna watched everything with intense focus, tail wrapped tight around her paws. When Riley lowered the bow, she took a wobbly step closer and butted her head gently against his wrist.
Riley smiled and scratched under her chin.
"Don't worry," he murmured. "We'll get you strong too."
Hayes eventually cleared his throat.
"Alright. Tests successful. We're burning daylight."
"True," Hayley agreed. "We still need Glowcap, Vine Thread, Streamwater, and those spores for Kipp."
Sofia's eyes lit up. "He's going to be so happy when we bring everything."
Aria hopped down from her rock and clenched her fist.
"New plan!
One: Train Luna.
Two: Feed Kipp.
Three: Punch something big and satisfying."
"Four," Hayes added dryly. "Try not to die."
"Five," Hayley said, lifting a finger. "No bullying other players."
Aria gasped. "I am a ray of sunshine. How dare—"
Riley laughed under his breath.
The tension from earlier had fully melted now.
He shifted Shimmerstring across his back. The bow settled there like it belonged, a faint thread of light still connecting its limbs.
He looked down at Luna trotting beside his boot with determined, slightly clumsy steps, and at Lumi, who had resumed his proud position on Riley's shoulder.
Two spirits of light.
A bow that grew with them.
A path he'd never managed to touch in his first life.
"Yeah," he said quietly, but firmly. "Let's go. Today's going to be productive."
The group moved as one, boots crunching lightly on leaves.
The forest seemed to brighten as they went, beams of sunlight guiding their way.
And somewhere ahead, deeper in the Grove, Kipp's ingredients, new fights, and the next steps of their second chance awaited.
