Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Following the Clues

Watching the Lizardman turn into a dark shadow in the water and speed away, Corin did not continue to pursue.

The light in the underground pipes was dim, but in Corin's super strong vision it was as bright as daytime, and no detail could escape.

When the Lizardman escaped, he tugged on a strand of web and pulled the camera fixed to the wall down into the water with it.

It was obvious the camera had been set up by Little Spider, but right now he seemed to be badly hurt. It was necessary to remind him.

"Hey~ Little Spider, you okay?"

Corin walked casually along the spider silk and looked at the bloody wounds on Peter Parker's chest as he lay there panting, and asked after him.

Struggling to sit up, Peter Parker had no idea what kind of background this mysterious man in front of him had.

Ever since he let the Lizardman go on the bridge last time, he had always had a knot in his heart.

There was a faint worry in his heart that the decay-rate algorithm he had written just to show off for a moment might have caused trouble.

That was something his father had once risked his life to hide away.

And then, Uncle had said, ("The greater the power, the greater the responsibility.")

Now he really felt it deeply.

At the moment he successfully saved that little boy on the bridge, the way the father and son looked at him made every hair on his body stand on end.

That feeling… was intoxicating.

But he still needed more training. Facing the Lizardman, he always felt helpless.

If not for this man in front of him stepping in just now, he might have been in real danger.

'How did he drive the Lizardman back with a single move?'

'Why is he here?'

'Who is he?'

Looking up at the figure in front of him who seemed so bright and open, "Oh, damn! Was it you who saved me? Just now you were clearly so far away from us, my god~ how did you do that? Who are you?"

Corin gave a bitter little laugh as he looked at the wound on Little Spider's chest still gushing blood, while he kept tugging at him with curiosity and asking question after question.

'Looks like this version of Little Spider still has a bit of a chatterbox trait.'

"I'm just a bounty hunter, the rest isn't important. That camera on the wall just now was yours, right?"

Only when Corin reminded him out loud did Little Spider remember that thing. His spirits lifted.

"Yeah~ I especially picked a good angle and wanted to shoot."

He turned his head to look at the spot where the camera had been fixed, and suddenly found the camera... was gone.

Nimbly springing to his feet and searching the spot on the ground in a circle, just as Little Spider was about to go down into the water to look for it, Corin spoke, "No need to look. Your camera was taken away by the Lizardman."

Hearing this, Peter Parker froze on the spot and thought to himself, 'Crap! My name is on that camera.'

———

[Temporary Sewer Lab]

The exhausted Lizardman crawled out of the water. The sound of metal scraping along the ground behind him and a sudden flash of white light caught his attention.

He pulled up the web, and a camera appeared in front of him.

Turning the camera over, he found that at the base of the flash there were carved words, [Property of Peter Parker.]

His claws tightened, and the metal camera was twisted through and crushed to pieces in the Lizardman's hand.

"Peter Parker!"

In human form again, Dr. Curt Connors still had lizard scales on half his face, and his right arm had gone back to being severed at the elbow.

Test subject: Dr. Curt Connors

Body temperature 89.7

Stable for 48 hours

Blood analysis shows that the text of the lymphocytes and monocytes all contain information from the original subject.

Speaking into the camera recording the experiment process, Dr. Connors' tone was somewhat excited, "Clotting speed has greatly increased. Muscle reaction, strength, agility have all significantly improved…"

He glanced at the glasses in his hand, then looked toward the camera with shining eyes: "Vision has been correspondingly improved. The test subject no longer needs corrective lenses."

Feeling the power flowing through his body, Dr. Connors' heart surged, "This is not the way to find a cure for disease, but the road to finding the perfect species!"

He immediately took out a gene serum and injected it into his body. Looking at the camera, his gaze was firm, "Attempting to prevent recurrence of old injuries, dosage increased to 200 milligrams!"

His body kept growing larger, the missing arm rapidly regenerated, scales covered his whole body, and his eyes turned yellow, slitted pupils gleaming coldly.

At this moment, another voice sounded in Dr. Connors' mind, that was a second personality, born from the gene serum.

"I won't allow you to ruin my plan, Peter Parker!"

With a roar, the camera's view swung aside and went black.

———

"Whatever the case, thank you for lending a hand, sir."

Having lost his camera, Peter Parker looked helpless, but still politely thanked Corin.

Corin waved it off indifferently, thinking about where the Lizardman might go, and casually asked, "Little Spider, do you know what that big lizard's next move will be?"

Peter Parker had no clue either and could only give a wry shake of his head.

Seeing the shocking wounds on Little Spider's chest, Corin suggested he find a good place to rest properly.

After saying goodbye to Little Spider, Corin figured that this Lizardman who had suddenly appeared must have some temporary base somewhere in the sewers.

Since he had nothing much to do right now, for the sake of the bounty, it was still necessary to search carefully.

So he began a search through New York City's vast sewer system.

———

'Going home with all these wounds, Aunt will kill me.'

Peter's thoughts spun, 'The Lizardman took my camera, he'll most likely see the name on it.'

'If he doesn't recognize the name, then fine, but if he does know me, will he want revenge?'

'That guy said he's a bounty hunter, but why didn't he just kill the Lizardman outright?'

'And I'm this badly hurt, I was actually hoping this bounty hunter would lend a hand and help me out, but how could he just walk away so calmly?'

'Is he afraid of trouble, or is there some other reason?'

'But overall, he probably isn't an enemy. His target should be the Lizardman.'

'Because with his methods, if his target was me… he had plenty of chances to take me out just now.'

'Forget it, too many questions, I can't sort them out.'

'Better go to Gwen's place and lay low for a bit first.'

Because of his injuries, Peter didn't dare go back to Aunt's house. He came instead to the window outside his girlfriend Gwen Stacy's place.

One second she was still focused on her computer, the next she heard Peter Parker knocking his head on the window, and naturally turned around, hands not stopping on the keyboard, and motioned for him to come in himself.

"You should really think about coming in through the front door like a normal person."

"Also, my dad thinks you should see a shrink."

Earlier, at a family dinner at Gwen's place, Peter and Gwen's father had had a serious disagreement over whether Spider-Man was legal or not.

"Oh? Really?", As Peter Parker's laugh was followed by a muffled groan, Gwen finally realized that the handsome guy in front of her was actually badly hurt.

She quickly asked what had happened.

Peter Parker lay back on the sofa, exhausted, "Another guy. He suddenly changed from a person into a huge lizard…"

Just then, Gwen's father's voice suddenly sounded at the door, "Sweetheart, you want a cup of hot cocoa?"

Little Spider quickly hid behind the sofa.

Using period cramps as an excuse, Gwen guiltily turned her father down, then picked up a handkerchief and began cleaning the fierce wounds on Peter Parker's chest.

She said that ever since she was little, every day she watched her dad go off to work with his badge and gun, and she was always worried he might just never come back.

She was very worried that Peter would run into some danger too.

Thinking of everything that had happened, Peter's eyes were firm, "I created him… I have to stop him!"

———

Leaving aside the young and hot-blooded Little Spider taking Gwen for a spin between skyscrapers despite his injuries, down in the sewers Corin had made a new discovery.

In a relatively tidy area, there was a pile of various kinds of equipment, as well as some empty bottles that had contained serum.

On the computer screen was a plan to spread the gene serum throughout the entire city.

The final place to release the virus was the Osborn Group tower.

At the same time, a spot circled on the map on the table caught Corin's eye, Midtown Science High School in Queens.

His pupils shrank. Corin knew that was where Little Spider went to school.

'It looks like the Lizardman wants to get revenge on Little Spider first, then carry out that plan to infect the whole city.'

Thinking of this, Corin silently complained, "The villains Little Spider runs into all have pretty big ambitions."
