Chapter 488 - The Frenzy of the Swarm

The sudden, chaotic deluge of fire filling the heavens commanded the attention of everyone below.

The orbital surveillance networks and numerous defense platforms safeguarding the jungle world of Luann and the ice world of Glacemaw had long since been pulverized by the Tyranid bio-fleets, and the Imperial Navy had been violently driven from the system's high orbit. Consequently, the ground forces of the Imperium remained utterly blind to the unfolding nightmare in the void above.

In the ink-black vacuum, Hive Fleet Kraken was launching a ferocious counteroffensive against Axion's fleet.

The single intact tendril was attempting to sweep away the severed biological masses that the Heart of the Forge had blasted loose. To achieve this, the remaining Tyranid hive-tendril sought to leverage its sheer, titanic mass to crush the Heart of the Forge out of the engagement zone. Yet, the sluggish bio-pulses of the alien entity were ultimately no match for the near-instantaneous speed of Iron Men pulse signals.

Through relentless data processing, Axion easily calculated the attack trajectory of the gargantuan biological mass. Forcing the Heart of the Forge into a desperate, razor-thin maneuver, he evaded the terrifying sweep of the colossal bio-limb, before unleashing a second volley of precision fire that yielded twice the devastation.

The terminal tips of both hive-tendrils, each stretching several light-minutes in length, were utterly vaporized by the obliterating beams of the Oblivion Cannons.

But the Great Devourer had been driven into a state of absolute, unbridled fury, compelling the collective consciousness of the swarm to commit a tactical anomaly completely uncharacteristic of its usual behavior.

The two wounded tendrils distended even further, crisscrossing through the void as they lashed out wildly toward the Heart of the Forge, which was holding the line at the system's outer edge. As they whipped through the vacuum, uncounted thousands of Tyranid bio-ships were violently sloughed off their fleshly trunks.

Faced with a massive biological anatomy teeming with a dense carpet of psychic organs, the strength of the alien warp-shielding began to compound exponentially. Even the apocalyptic armaments mounted upon the Heart of the Forge now required sustained, concentrated salvos to inflict any meaningful structural ruin.

The pressure bearing down on the void-fleet began to escalate catastrophically.

Meanwhile, across the scarred surfaces of the worlds below, the Tyranids had descended into a state of sheer madness.

Hordes of bio-creatures threw themselves frantically into the bubbling depths of digestion pools. Swarms of bio-ships choked the low-orbital pathways, each clamping hungrily onto the nearest capillary towers, engorging themselves on raw biomass. The biological vessels, previously gaunt and depleted from churning out the planetary swarms, began to swell visibly before the naked eye.

These living leviathans were undergoing a rapid, violent metamorphosis.

Enormous, ultra-dense monomolecular bone-blades began to erupt from the prows of these space-faring behemoths. Heavy, calcified plates of chitinous armor encrusted their skulls and vital organs, while bio-engines rapidly evolved along their muscular flanks. Their silhouettes morphed to resemble the prehistoric billfish of ancient Terra, if one could look past the grotesque arrays of bio-weapons that would induce vertigo in any mortal onlooker.

This new breed of Tyranid horror began to accelerate through the void, throwing themselves headlong toward the rampaging Heavy Assault Cruisers.

The mechanical warships of the Iron Men were vastly superior to the vessels of the Imperium, yet under the sheer weight of such an overwhelming bio-swarm, they inevitably began to suffer severe damage.

The forward lance batteries of the Assault Cruisers could effortlessly tear through these bizarre bio-ships, which measured less than two kilometers apiece. However, void warfare was fundamentally three-dimensional. When dozens of these living torpedoes, bearing massive monomolecular horns, plunged from every conceivable vector toward the twenty-kilometer-long Heavy Assault Cruisers, the situation deteriorated rapidly.

The heavy void shields proved relatively ineffective against these massive living projectiles, which, despite traveling far slower than kinetic munitions, possessed a staggering, crushing mass. Furthermore, to combat the nanite-repair systems of the Iron Men, the Great Devourer had evolved an exceptionally corrosive, acidic blood within these kamikaze bio-vessels.

Though the Assault Cruisers were ringed with numerous railgun arrays, short-range, high-burst, rapid-fire orbital weapons capable of shredding anything that drew near into atomized dust, the Tyranid bio-ships were still warships. Their thick bone-plates and overwhelming numbers allowed them to close the distance against the bristling, hedgehog-like Iron Men vessels.

It took a considerable amount of time for the Imperial fleet to recover their wits after witnessing the clash between the Heart of the Forge and the Kraken tendrils. They hastily re-formed their battle lines, attempting to offer fire support to the mechanical fleet.

Yet, the spectacle before the Imperial soldiers filled them with absolute dread.

A multitude of Heavy Assault Cruisers were now impaled by three or four of these newly evolved Tyranid bio-ships. Enormous bone-spurs had driven deep into the silver-white hulls. Dark, venomous green blood erupted continuously from the entry wounds where flesh met metal, violently widening the breaches within the starships' hulls.

However, the Iron Men quickly calculated a brutal solution.

From the rear echelons, Strike Cruisers began to unleash devastating plasma barrages directly into their own beleaguered sister ships. Brilliant blue beams struck the impalement zones with perfect, unerring accuracy. The incandescent heat turned the external hulls white-hot, vaporizing the highly acidic blood before it could spread.

The terrifying corrosion was systematically halted.

Even though the starships glowed a violent, ruinous red, and gaping holes melted by acid exposed their internal sub-structures, these mechanical vessels never once ceased their fire.

The sight filled the Imperial Navy ratings with a spine-chilling horror. It was as though the animated corpses of dead ships were continuing to wage war.

Streamers of blue light from the railguns tore through the dark, continuous and relentless. Vast swaths of Tyranid bio-ships were blown into incandescent fragments across the void.

Then, with a sudden flash of psychic luminescence, the cruelty of the engagement surged to an even more horrific peak.

A massive swarm of bio-creatures hurled out by the lashing hive-tendrils launched a sudden ambush against Axion's rear-guard vessels. Several titanic Narvhal bio-ships suddenly materialized beneath the Strike Cruisers, surrounded by dense shoals of Kraken-class escorts.

These skeletal, tube-mouthed bio-vessels unleashed a torrent of biological acid toward the mechanical fleet above. The slow-drifting, viscous liquid completely bypassed the void shields of the long-range Strike Cruisers, which were calibrated to repel high-velocity impacts.

Though the mechanical ships reacted with instantaneous precision, their belly-mounted plasma batteries opening fire the moment the enemies were logged beneath them, several cruisers were already drenched in the bio-acid.

The corrosive fluid ate directly into the hyper-heated plasma weapon arrays. As internal circuitry failed, catastrophic secondary explosions tore through the underbellies of the ships. The violent detonations hurled massive sheets of outer armor plating into the void like shrapnel, shredding the nearby Kraken escorts, but the systemic damage was done.

They faced the exact same crisis as the Heavy Assault Cruisers. There were simply too many enemies.

The entire mechanical fleet numbered barely over a hundred vessels, while the bio-swarm hurled forth by the two hive-tendrils exceeded thousands. This sudden ambush by the lighter escorts forced Axion to escalate his cognitive processing to its absolute limits, micro-managing every single vessel with granular precision.

Yet, the true axis of the battle remained the meat-grinder surrounding the Heart of the Forge.

The two colossal hive-tendrils were now marred by a horrific number of new wounds. Incalculable torrents of ichor and mountains of severed flesh choked the outer reaches of the star system. Conversely, the hull of the Heart of the Forge was gouged by several massive, ruined craters. Her heavy void shields had completely collapsed, and faint, shimmering silver motes of light flickered desperately across her frame.

Even though her nanite-repair systems were churning at maximum output, too many nanomachines had been diverted to decompose the previously severed masses of the Kraken hive-flesh. The Heart of the Forge could no longer execute her signature, instantaneous self-repair.

The structural damage sustained beneath her skin was far more severe than her exterior indicated.

Of the twin Oblivion Cannons mounted to her prow, one lay ruined and silent. The containment brackets on one side of the Super-Mass Projector were violently warped out of alignment.

Yet, the gaping, mountain-sized cavity torn into one of the Kraken hive-tendrils, a wound wide enough for a Phalanx-class vessel to sail through, had been inflicted moments prior, when the Heart of the Forge had utilized a crippled Heavy Assault Cruiser as a kinetic slug.

That particular cruiser had been dissolved by acid down to a mere third of its original mass, its spine on the verge of snapping. The Heart of the Forge had swiftly atomized the forward section into raw metallic fuel to patch her own wounds, while forcing the remaining aft section and its plasma core into a state of terminal overload.

Then, the Super-Mass Projector had hurled it forth like a catastrophic thunderbolt.

The terrifying mass of the solid hull and high-density alloys, coupled with ungodly kinetic energy, had driven entirely through the ten-light-minute-wide tendril. The shattered remnants of the ship, already disintegrating from the impact, acted exactly like a fragmentation grenade detonating deep within an open wound.

Following that horrific internal explosion and the compounding trauma of previous strikes, this section of the hive-tendril now hung on the absolute precipice of snapping in two.
