Chapter 480 - The Temptation of Knowledge

Having witnessed the suite of demonstrations executed by the Punisher Titans, Magos Fathor ignored Archmagos Valentine and the other senior Magi, who were still violently struggling to regain control of their systems. With a look of deep disbelief, Fathor turned back toward Axion. The ancient machine stood motionless, its optical arrays still calculatingly scanning the distant Imperial god-machines.

"Praise the Omnissiah! Sovereign fragment of ancient, grand intellect... when you spoke previously of a bipedal self-propelled weapon platform, did your words pertain to these miraculous long-steps of the Divine Machine?"

Axion rotated his chassis slightly, looking down upon Fathor before transmitting his vocal response.

"These are no miracles of your 'Omnissiah.' They are the refined fruits of the Creator's intellect, the materialization of pure science and logic. By no metric can you deny the absolute supremacy of the Creator. Even this processing unit is but a minor work of their hands."

"Furthermore, the terms of exchange I proposed do not encompass these existing architectures."

"To accommodate the primitive manufacturing methodologies currently available to your order, I shall synthesize an entirely new frame configuration to fulfill our transaction. Naturally, it will remain vastly superior to your current standard. If your logistics demand verification, I can construct a localized prototype framework, provided the requisite raw materials are allocated to my coordinates."

Bound by the protocols, Axion was forbidden from distributing paradigm-altering technological leaps. He could only analyze the logic underlying their extant hardware, providing optimization vectors and structural refinements.

The manufacturing precision, metallurgical science, and, most critically, the sapient machine cores driving the Punisher Titans were heights the modern Imperium could not hope to scale. Even if the schematics were gifted unconditionally to the tech-clergy of Lucius, they lacked the fundamental industry to replicate them.

Moreover, Imperial edict strictly forbade the Adeptus Mechanicus from trafficking in the Abominable Intelligence.

The systemic kinematics required to operate a machine body of that scale were incomprehensibly dense. Based on the sub-surface analytics Axion had compiled from the nearby Imperator-class Titan, the distributed cogitator arrays standard to Imperial designs would suffer immediate logic failure if integrated into a chassis as responsive as a Punisher Titan.

A single high-velocity leap and subsequent kinetic impact would send their primitive calculating nodes into total processing paralysis, to say nothing of simultaneously managing weapon targeting vectors, balancing stabilization fields, and performing evasive maneuvers.

Yet, even with these localized adjustments, this new architecture would completely overturn the foundational design templates used in the forging of modern Imperial Titans.

Fathor was utterly incapable of refusing such a holy offering. However, he was also trapped by his own institutional limitations.

"If it is acceptable to your protocols... I must request that you accompany me to a designated sub-sector of this forge world."

As merely the disciple of a primary Magos of Mars, Magos Fathor possessed a respectable degree of diplomatic leverage, but his personal access to high-tier schematics was restricted. As for the forbidden orbital teleportation matrices used by the Warp Runners Titan Legion, those were secrets far beyond the clearance of a mid-ranking magos.

Fathor dared not blindly agree to Axion's material demands on the spot. He could not conceive the catastrophic geopolitical fallout if he failed to deliver the promised tech-tribute to this entity. He had no desire to test the wrath of what his order perceived as a living avatar of the Machine God.

Though Axion registered a minor processing variance regarding Fathor's hesitation, he ultimately accepted the request.

Soon after, while the collective attention of the Mechanicus assembly remained utterly transfixed by the idling Punisher Titans, Fathor covertly guided Axion toward an inconspicuous Valkyrie airborne transport resting on a nearby landing pad.

Glancing at Axion's towering, heavy mechanical frame, Fathor found himself in a bit of a dilemma

Before the Magos could speak, however, Fathor's optical units widened in sheer astonishment as the machine body before him began to shift. The lower bipedal locomotion systems retracted, folding smoothly into the primary torso, while the dorsal chassis expanded outward to deploy two massive vector-thrust cowlings.

Had his internal quantum printing modules been cleared to self-deconstruct his primary chassis, Axion could have reconfigured his entire form into a dedicated atmospheric flight craft.

"Flight module configuration fully instantiated. Commencing behavioral transit protocols."

Fathor stepped into the cargo bay of the Valkyrie, looking back three times in anxious awe before sealing the hatch.

Moments later, the twin F75-MV afterburning vector-thrust turbofans roared to life. The agile transport swept skyward, cutting through the heavy atmosphere and leaving behind the resonant, industrial thrumming of the idling god-machines as it charted a direct vector toward a distant forge-temple complex.

Axion controlled his frame with precise micro-adjustments, trailing directly within the aircraft's thermal wake.

After traversing a significant expanse of blackened wasteland, the Valkyrie began its descent.

Here, the mechanical scream of heavy industry was deafening. Monotonous, multi-layered binary hymns were broadcasted without intermission over high-output vox-arrays. Countless lobotomized servitors and human bondsmen swarmed over structural scaffoldings in frantic, repetitive labor.

At regular intervals, senior Magi accompanied by hovering formations of servo-skulls could be seen navigating the multi-tiered foundry floors.

This was one of the premier Titan-foundries of Lucius, and one of the rare industrial nodes on the planet hooked directly into artificial solar energy grids.

Searing, oppressive heat radiated from open conduits where incandescent streams of liquid iron rushed through specialized channels like rivers of volcanic blood. Showers of white-hot sparks erupted continuously into the dim air.

Colossal iron cogs turned with agonizing slowness, vibrating the bedrock with heavy, rhythmic thuds. Servitors threw heavy iron levers to actuate high-pressure pistons, venting columns of superheated, toxic steam into the upper rafters of the vaulted ceiling.

By the time Magos Fathor stepped out onto the gantry from the Valkyrie's bay, Axion's machine frame had already touched down. The flight apparatus vanished into internal housing, and the bipedal leg structures deployed smoothly back to their default state.

With a precise mechanical gesture, Fathor signaled for Axion to follow him deeper into the labyrinthine heart of the foundry.

The towering machine moved with silent, fluid stability, following the Magos through a complex matrix of industrial gantries. Wherever they passed, even the hollow, chem-dulled eyes of the mortal slaves would occasionally drift upward, catching a brief, curious glimpse of the pristine, unblemished metallic hull, a stark contrast to the grime of the forge world.

Several Tech-Priests crossing their path bowed low in ritual reverence upon recognizing Fathor's specific heraldry. Judging by their simple copper-alloy cog-bionics, the majority of these individuals were low-ranking initiates of the tech-clergy.

Following a sequence of industrial catwalks choked with the acrid stench of sulfur, ionized ozone, and billowing heatwaves, the pair finally arrived at the innermost sanctum of the complex.

A massive blast door forged from reinforced adamantium dominated Axion's visual field.

Standing sentinel before the threshold was a detachment of the Legio Cybernetica. Cast in the harsh crimson glare of the flowing slag below, the heavily armored silhouettes of these Kastelan Robots stood as unmoving as statues of black iron.

They were deployed in fire-teams of three, totaling twelve battle-automata in all.

As Fathor and Axion crossed the outer security perimeter, the twin-linked phosphor blasters mounted to the Kastelan's tracking mounts whirred to life, adjusting their logic-gates to lock onto the targets.

The sudden target-acquisition routine of the automations immediately alerted the Cybernetica Datasmiths monitoring the defense sector from the rear line.

Fathor halted his advance a hundred meters from the blast doors, signaling Axion to pause.

Shortly after, a small cadre of Tech-Priests bearing highly distinct structural augmentations stepped out from behind the black-plated war machines. Though they bore the traditional forge-sigils of Lucius and the Adeptus Mechanicus, their physical configurations set them apart from standard production magi.

Each of these Datasmiths possessed multiple mechadendrites and specialized servo-arms, designed to allow them to manually swap the combat-doctrine cortex wafers of multiple Kastelan Robots simultaneously.

These were the specialized binary handlers charged with directing this cybernetic defense cohort.

Beyond these visible handlers, Axion's multi-spectrum scanners detected additional threats: several human shapes cloaked in matte-black stealth fabrics, positioned within the shadowed recesses of the architecture and utilizing electronic countermeasure suites to blur their physical forms.

These hidden soldiers carried strange, elongated power blades and compact carbines. Their craniums had been radically re-engineered into dome-like structures resembling the drone casings utilized by the T'au Empire, a mushroom-shaped helm fitted over severed facial structures, their biological limbs completely discarded in favor of specialized, high-grade cybernetic prosthetics.

These were Sicarian Infiltrators, specifically, the elite Infiltrator Alphas, an exceptionally rare vanguard formation within the Skitarii Legions.

They were heavily armed with signature arc blades, stubcarbines, and high-yield flechette blasters, alongside bundles of specialized macro-clatter grenades secured to their belts.

Operating in a state of partial electronic invisibility, these augmented killers served as a living sensory tripwire. Should an interloper successfully jam local vox-frequencies or display a combat threat metric exceeding the Infiltrators' defensive capacity, their core operational directives dictated an immediate tactical withdrawal to summon overwhelming reinforcements to the sector.
