Chapter 408 - The Rapid Metamorphosis of the Greenskins

With the full-scale deployment of the Iron Men across the planetary theaters, the relentless momentum of the Ork offensive was finally blunted.

However, because the greenskins had ignited conflicts across an immense number of fronts simultaneously, Axion quickly realized that his available mechanical cohorts were being stretched dangerously thin.

When facing the Tyranids, Axion had been able to coordinate his legions to swiftly and methodically purge the bio-horrors. But here, each localized warzone was allocated only a few thousand to tens of thousands of combat automata. The green skin enemies matched the hive fleets in sheer, suffocating numbers, but they possessed a far more problematic variable: they were capable of technological utilization.

The mechanical legions were undeniably lethal, even a baseline Automated Sentry-Trooper possessed martial capabilities that far eclipsed a standard Space Marine, yet a single unit could still be overwhelmed and dismantled if subjected to the synchronized fire of a thousand Ork shootas.

One had to understand that the bore of a standard Ork shoota was scarcely smaller than the bolt weaponry wielded by the Adeptus Astartes.

Though crude, these weapons were excessively violent. What the greenskins lacked in accuracy, they compensated for through sheer, suffocating volume of fire.

The shattered remnants of the Sentry-Troopers recovered from the front lines were often reduced to a few critical mechanical components buried beneath mountains of spent bullet casings.

Even with the hyper-advanced replication capabilities of nanite restoration protocols, structural reconstruction required crucial time. Yet the frantic, chaotic madness of the Orks far exceeded Axion's strategic models.

Whenever a mechanical unit sustained critical damage, its chassis sections would systematically vanish from the field.

The missing structural plating and internal logic circuits were almost invariably scavenged by swarms of Grots scurrying through the mud and ash of the trenches. To the cross-eyed perspective of the greenskins, the gleaming, flawless silver hulls of the automata were rare and highly coveted treasures.

It did not take long for Axion's tactical sub-routines to detect his own weapon designs being crudely integrated into the jury-rigged armaments of the Ork xenos.

In one egregious instance, the heavy choppa wielded by an Ork Nob began radiating the distinct, high-frequency hum of an iron-tier particle vibration field.

These devices, which possessed destructive capabilities far superior to standard Imperial power weapons, instantly amplified the localized lethality of the greenskin vanguard.

Though the Orks' martial forms were clumsy and unrefined, their biological combat instincts were horrifyingly sharp.

Before long, the mud-clogged battlefields devolved into desperate melees, with Sentry-Troopers rapidly cycling through their ancient close-quarters combat codices to counter the sheer brute force of the xenos.

Prior to the commencement of each ground campaign, Axion had performed exhaustive threat assessments of the planetary Ork presence.

Yet the greenskins' rate of technological adaptation and their inexplicable, physics-defying speed of fabrication began to trigger anomalies within Axion's predictive calculations.

The evolutionary cycle of Ork weaponry was accelerating at a terrifying pace. Before the mechanical cohorts were dropped into certain warzones, the local greenskin assets consisted of nothing more than standard, ramshackle armored buggies and light transports.

But the moment the star-fleets departed orbit to reinforce adjacent systems, the localized Orks underwent a massive technological upgrade.

The Erratana-class Armored Wardens had initially proven highly efficient at systematically eliminating conventional Ork armor.

Yet as the lines of engagement ground on, the Ork tanks, truks, and assorted battle-wagons gradually swelled and mutated into towering, crude effigies of Gork and Mork, bizarre war engines that stood a full head taller than the Armored Wardens themselves.

The rank-and-file Ork hordes were suddenly bolstered by vast phalanxes of Killa Kans, Deff Dreads, and assorted armored monstrosities.

These heavy scrap-walkers inflicted a severe toll on baseline mechanical units.

In a terrifyingly brief window, the attrition rates for the Sentry-Troopers began to climb steadily along a steep upward trajectory.

In stark contrast, the dozen planetary warzones that had immediately escalated to Apocalypse-class thresholds were experiencing the highest rates of tactical stability.

In those specific zones, Axion had committed overwhelming numbers from the outset, throwing in multiple Punisher-class Mega-Titans to directly crush the greenskins' mega-structures.

Though the campaigns consumed several standard terran days, every moving xenos organism was eventually reduced to fine biomatter.

The auxiliary Imperial regiments followed closely behind the advancing iron ranks, wielding heavy promethium flamers to systematically incinerate the soil and neutralize any lingering Ork spores.

This grinding method of warfare filled Axion with a profound sense of tactical frustration. No matter how many variables his processing cores calculated, the conflict had degenerated into a quagmire that defied conventional strategic resolution.

His ships were armed with Relativistic Particle Launchers capable of unleashing high-energy particle beams. This chaotic, apocalyptic stream of radiation could effortlessly vaporize every living organism down to a planetary depth of three kilometers.

The sole tactical drawback was that the crust would be left with a 'minor' layer of persistent, hyper-lethal residual radiation.

Yet currently, Imperial defense regiments, mortal survivors, and millions of shifting Ork hosts were completely entangled across hundreds of civilized worlds.

Axion could not employ his most efficient ship-borne batteries without inflicting total collateral devastation.

He was trapped in a cycle of diminishing returns, forced to continuously bleed resources into low-efficiency planetary grinds.

Had he not been constrained by the survival parameters of the Imperial garrisons and the civilian populaces, Axion possessed a multitude of severe methods to cleanse these worlds.

He could have simply commanded a handful of Destroyer automata to ignite the planetary atmospheres with their plasma incinerators.

An atmospheric thermal increase of two to three hundred degrees would scarcely impact the optimal operating tolerances of his mechanical legions, and even if the world's oxygen supply was entirely consumed by the firestorm, Axion possessed more than enough ancient terraforming data to fully restore the planetary ecosystem afterward.

Instead, the tactical quagmire continued to expand.

Exactly one terran week after Axion's transport fleets arrived to deploy the mechanical cohorts, seventeen Apocalypse-class warzones were successfully brought to a close, liberating seventeen shattered Imperial worlds.

The mechanical legions performed swift field-salvage of their own compromised chassis, dragged away mountains of mangled Ork scrap for processing, and promptly departed the systems.

The local Imperial garrisons were left amidst the ruins to rebuild their planetary defense networks and brace against potential secondary xenos splinters.

The reason the Iron Men's ground forces were so rapidly extracted was simple: a vastly greater number of conventional warzones were rapidly evolving into Apocalypse-class vectors.

Across an increasing number of sectors, the arrival of the Iron Men seemed to provoke the sudden appearance of rare, heavily up-gunned Ork war engines.

The crude, towering effigies of Gork and Mork, once restricted to a fraction of the primary fronts, now lumbered across almost every single invaded world.

The warzones were completely saturated with Stompas and Supa-Stompas.

Worse still, the specific sectors that had been reinforced with Destroyer-class heavy automata to turn the tide were now reporting the sudden appearance of towering Gargants.

The Orks seemed hardwired to instinctively counter the deployment of the Iron Men by manifestations of larger, louder, and infinitely more Waaagh!-infused engine classes.

Concurrently, the structural integrity and lethality of these xenos engines were climbing rapidly.

No longer were they merely outfitted with their traditional, absurdly high-caliber Supa-Cannons or Big-Lobbas; they had begun mounting highly volatile, high-energy directed weapons.

Crude energy weapons that appeared even more exaggerated than the heavy plasma blasters or super-heavy Volcano Cannons of the Imperial Titan Orders began opening fire across the plains, inflicting significant, unrecoverable losses among the Destroyer automata.

Deprived of a decisive material advantage on those fronts, Axion had no choice but to redeploy his newly recalled Punisher-class Mega-Titans into the meatgrinder, backing them with massive echelons of ground troops to force a total, localized eradication.

However, as the tally of Apocalypse-class warzones threatened to spiral out of control, Axion immediately drew a brand-new classification of combat machinery from the manufacturing bays of the Heart of the Forge.

Massive arrays of heavy carriers slipped out of the void, charting courses for over a hundred conventional warzones where the fighting had not yet devolved into titan-scale stalemates. Working with cold efficiency, they recalled the standard mechanical regiments from the front lines.

Then, under the uncomprehending stares of the dirt-streaked Imperial soldiers, the automated drop-craft deployed dozens of seamless, silver-white metal spheres across each sector, none measuring more than ten meters in diameter.

Staring at these enigmatic, featureless smooth structures, the Astra Militarum generals immediately turned to their Tech-Priests, desperate to extract any sliver of theological or technical explanation.

Yet the mechanical priesthood was far more bewildered than the baseline mortals.

During the previous engagements, they had stared at the moving automata in a state of holy delirium, sacred unguents leaking from their cybernetic optics as they mapped the divine geometry of every stride, dodge, and kinetic rotation.

But before these pristine, featureless spheres of silver metal, their sacred binary logic fell utterly silent. They could extract no data, find no access ports, and derive absolutely no structural intent from the smooth, unblemished hulls.
