Chapter 14: The Doppelgänger and the Unseen Voice🐰 The Rabbit Roundup (Eastern Woods)
Shina arrived at the edge of the eastern woods, breathing heavily but smiling. He found Sora ankle-deep in snow, wildly chasing several small, frantic snow rabbits that were scattering in terror. Sora's intense enthusiasm was clearly being misinterpreted as aggression.
"Sora-san! Stop, aye! They just wanna be left alone!" Shina called, running forward.
He quickly dropped into his Low Mountain Stance—a position now automatic, even when not training—and channeled his Qi, not for heat, but for calm. He released a low, steady pulse of controlled energy, spreading a wave of profound stillness over the snow. The rabbits instantly froze, recognizing the disciplined energy.
Sora stopped running, looking disappointed. "Aw! You used the stillness power, Shina-san! Now they won't play with me!"
"They ain't playing, Sora-san, they be terrified," Shina said gently, scooping up the small, four-year-old child and setting him on a nearby tree stump. "We gotta respect the Hull of the rabbits too, aye?"
Shina was just turning back toward the sect grounds, intending to bring Sora back before the Master noticed their delay, when a shadow detached itself from the dense stand of pines.
A figure stepped onto the cleared path. He was clad in a dark, impeccable suit, and his posture was rigid, tactical, and immediately authoritative.
Deputy Minchol.
🥶 The Identical Shock
Minchol had clearly taken a detour after landing to survey the sect's immediate surroundings, checking the perimeter for any lingering instability. He stopped dead in his tracks, his sharp, dark eyes fixing instantly on Shina.
Shina, still holding the residual Qi-calm around him, froze in an equally rigid posture.
The two men stared at each other. Both had the same powerful, tense build concealed by their respective garments (Minchol's suit, Shina's leather). Both had the same intense focus and the same jet-black hair.
However, where Minchol's hair was cut into a sharp, uniformly spiky tactical brush—clean and military—Shina's hair was longer and sharply spiky only in the front, emphasizing his nervousness and desperation for control.
Neither man noticed the subtle difference in styling. All they saw was the shock of near-perfect resemblance in their features and coloring.
"Y-you..." Shina whispered, his face going pale beneath his anxious flush. He recognized the Energetic Signature and the face, though the hair was now correct—not the Shinichi Kudo spikes he'd misremembered, but the real, tactical cut.
"I know you," Minchol stated, his voice tight with suspicion and professional caution. "But that is impossible. You were supposed to be eliminated weeks ago."
Sora looked back and forth between the two men, confused but quiet.
"What is your last name?" Minchol demanded, his hand already moving toward the small Dao-emitter hidden beneath his coat.
Shina, completely unnerved by the encounter and the man's familiar face, stammered out the truth. "Raines, aye. Mercer Raines."
Minchol's eyes widened, a flicker of genuine shock crossing his features. "No. That... that can't be. My last name is also Raines."
"We share no familial records, and the ages do not align," Minchol continued, his voice strained. "Yet... the physical markers..." He studied Shina's intense eyes and nervous disposition. "It is not impossible that a forgotten branch exists."
(But they aren't, dear reader. Not biologically, anyway. The similarity is purely cosmetic and plot-device driven, so don't worry about tracing a family tree. It's just a classic case of mistaken identity, or perhaps... a deliberate energetic echo.)
Shina flinched violently, snapping his head around toward the pines. He dropped his hand from the stump, his eyes wide with a new, fresh terror.
"Wh-who said that?" Shina whispered, his voice trembling. "Did you hear that, aye? That voice in my head! Did y'all hear that?"
Minchol and Sora exchanged confused glances.
"Hear what, Shina-san?" Sora asked innocently. "The wind?"
"I heard nothing, acolyte," Minchol stated, his confusion outweighing his professional caution.
Shina's breath hitched. Not X-ray vision. Not just a friendship window. Now I be hearin' voices! The chaos is getting worse! His internal Hull buckled under the weight of this new, terrifying failure.
"Another mess!" Shina cried out, grabbing his head. "I got a new mess! I'm learnin' powers I ain't supposed t'have! I need t'fix it! I need the Master, aye!"
Ignoring the stunned Deputy Minchol and the confused Sora, Shina turned and sprinted back toward the main pagoda, his heavy leather layers punishing him with every frantic step. He was running, not from the confrontation, but from the fear that his mind was truly beginning to break.
Minchol watched the strange, highly-agitated young man vanish. He slowly withdrew his hand from his Dao-emitter, his expression complex.
"Raines," Minchol murmured to himself, then looked down at Sora. "Who is that acolyte?"
Sora smiled brightly. "That's Shina! He's my friend! He's just trying to ask Itsukasi-sama about his advanced friendship window power!"
Minchol rubbed his temples, deciding this situation was far too complex for a brief reconnaissance stop. He turned and headed back toward his waiting transport.
Chapter 15: The Lollipop Interruption and the Third Ear🍭 The Smallest Disciple
Shina burst into Itsukasi's private quarters for the second time that day, panting heavily, his leather sticking uncomfortably to his sweat-dampened body. The Sect Master was already seated at his low table, calmly pouring tea, having clearly anticipated Shina's panicked return.
"Master! Master, aye, I think my mind is breakin' now!" Shina gasped, collapsing to his knees before the table. "I saw him, Minchol! He looks like me! And then... I heard a voice! A talking, unseen voice! I'm learning powers I don't want, sir!"
Before Itsukasi could respond, the door slid open again, and Sora trotted in, completely unfazed by the tension or the setting.
"Shina-san! Shina-san! Before you tell Itsukasi-sama about your new mind-power, can I have a haircut like yours, please?" Sora asked brightly, skipping up to the table. "My hair is too soft for a proper Hull! If I have spiky hair, maybe I can be advanced like you, too!"
Shina stared at him, his panic immediately warring with his need for discipline. "Sora-san! You can't just run into the Master's quarters! And no, aye! I can't be cuttin' your hair right now! I'm talkin' about breakin' my mind!"
Itsukasi raised one hand, silencing both the panicking acolyte and the persistent child. He reached into a small lacquered box on his table—a box Shina had never noticed before—and produced a brilliant, red lollipop.
"Sora," Itsukasi said, his voice gentle. "Your hair is perfect for your path. It is light, fast, and unburdened. Go wait for Shina in his room, and you may eat this. But you must wait quietly, because he is discussing very dangerous adult things."
Sora's eyes grew huge at the sight of the confection. "Wow! Thank you, Itsukasi-sama!" He snatched the lollipop, bowed perfectly (a feat Shina himself still struggled with), and then happily skipped out of the room, already tearing the wrapper off with intense concentration.
Shina watched the four-year-old happily invade his private space, wanting to protest the uninvited entry, but the sheer absurdity of the interruption defused his adrenaline spike.
"Master, he's in my room," Shina stated flatly.
"He is an unparalleled source of low-frequency chaos, Shina," Itsukasi replied, waving a hand dismissively. "He will keep your room warm. Now, sit."
🗣️ The Shared Legacy
Shina obeyed, settling onto the mat, forcing his breathing to slow.
"Deputy Minchol's appearance in the area confirms two things," Itsukasi began, his tone serious. "The plane you saw was real. And Minchol is hunting Ichikami Haru—the woman who created the Temporal Golem that attacked us. He will have used the shortest route, and the woods bordering the sector provide the fastest entry."
"But the other thing, Master," Shina insisted, leaning forward. "Raines! He said his last name was Raines! And he looked... like my third brother, only less smug!"
"The physical resemblance is startling, I agree," Itsukasi admitted. "The Hashima lineage is ancient and dispersed. It is possible, though highly unlikely, that he is a distant, forgotten cousin. However, the connection is most likely energetic, not genetic."
Itsukasi stirred his tea. "You and Deputy Minchol share a similar, intense energetic profile—the same core density and latent power, although his is rigidly Dao-disciplined, and yours is wildly thermal. You are energetically twins in potential, which could account for the physical similarity. Focus on the energy, not the superficial name."
👂 The Voice
"And the voice, Master?" Shina pressed, his voice barely above a whisper. "The voice that talked about my hair and the plot? I heard it, sir! It was clear, but no one else heard it!"
Itsukasi studied Shina, his eyes deep and calm. "Your new manifestation is the Purifier's Insight, Shina—the ability to perceive energetic flow across great distances, cutting through interference like a laser. You were sensing Minchol's immediate, subconscious thoughts, which are often communicated in pure energetic bursts."
"But the other voice..." Itsukasi paused, then chose his words carefully. "It is also possible, Shina, that when faced with an existential shock—the sight of your doppelgänger—your anxious mind briefly experienced auditory self-hallucination. Your mind, which hates chaos, attempted to rationalize the impossible by creating a narrative voice."
Shina listened, his brow furrowed. A self-hallucination. It sounded plausible, given his constant state of internal war. The shame of hearing an imaginary voice was immense.
"So, I didn't learn a new power, I just... I went a bit mad?" Shina asked quietly.
"You have learned a powerful detection skill, and you were startled by it," Itsukasi corrected firmly. "The chaos of the Hashima mind is a powerful thing, Shina. We must learn to manage its surprises. For now, assume the voice was a momentary lapse in your mental Hull."
Itsukasi stood. "We must move. The appearance of Minchol means Haru is close to her objective in Cortalis. We must train the Purifier's Strike to near perfection tonight."
"Aye, Master," Shina said, rising with a new seriousness. He walked toward the door, resolute in his training.
As he reached the corridor, he paused, glancing back at the Master. "Master Itsukasi?"
"Yes, Shina?"
"My hair... you never said if you thought it looked like Shinichi Kudo."
Itsukasi gave a brief, soft sigh. "It looks like the desperate attempt of an anxious boy to wear his control on the outside, Shina. Focus on the inside. Now go retrieve your lollipop-wielding distraction."
Shina grinned, his acceptance of the Master's gentle dismissal complete. He headed down the hall, prepared to retrieve his four-year-old friend and face the brutal, burning reality of his nightly training.
Chapter 16: The Bad Boy Bangs and the Broken Drawstrings👖 The Drawstring Disaster (Shina's Dormitory)
Shina slid open the door to his dormitory, ready to retrieve Sora and face the harsh reality of the Purifier's Striketraining.
The first thing he saw was the bright red smear of the finished lollipop on Sora's cheek. The second thing he saw made his blood run cold.
Sora was seated cheerfully on the tatami floor amidst a chaotic explosion of fabric. He had discovered the pants drawer(a large, sturdy container filled with Shina's travel-worn trousers, including spare leather pants and work clothes).
Sora, in his boundless, curious innocence, had emptied several pairs onto the floor. He wasn't playing with the fabric; he was pulling at the drawstrings on the inner linings of the work pants—the long, intricate cords used for fine waist adjustment. Sora found the process of pulling the strings through the casing immensely fun.
Three pairs of trousers lay ruined, their drawstrings entirely disconnected on one side, bunched irrevocably inside the casing, or lying in useless loops on the mat. Shina's meticulously organized drawer was half-empty, and the contents were utterly, utterly messy.
Shina froze in the doorway, a choked sound escaping his throat.
My pants!
The horror of the broken drawstrings—a tedious, time-consuming chore that required a safety pin, focus, and hours of patience to re-thread—immediately triggered an intense wave of anxiety. His previous panic about X-ray vision and unseen voices felt minor compared to the sheer physical reality of this domestic disaster.
Shina immediately pressed his fingers to his temples, a sudden, blinding headache spiking behind his eyes.
"Sora-san! Stop, aye! You broke the strings! They're all messed up!" Shina wailed, dropping his coat and rushing in.
Sora looked up, completely oblivious to the chaos he had wrought. He just giggled happily. "It's a really fun game, Shina-san! I made them all wiggly!"
Shina ran his hands through his spiky hair in despair, seeing the chore ahead: hours spent painstakingly fixing the functional integrity of his wardrobe. The mess is never ending!
✂️ The Bad Boy Request
Shina slowly corralled the damaged pants, forcing himself to breathe and channel his intense frustration into the Hull. Sora, sensing the game was over, quickly moved on to a new obsession.
"Shina-san, Shina-san, you promised!" Sora said, gesturing excitedly to Shina's hair. "I want to be bad boy like your friend! The man who looked like you! The one who looked like he could win every fight!"
"Minchol, aye?" Shina muttered, resignedly scooping up a drawstring.
"Yes! He looked so disciplined! I want the short, all-over spiky hair! Can you make me look like a bad boy, too, so I can be advanced?"
Shina looked at Sora's bright, round, innocent face and his soft, fluffy hair. He knew that attempting to replicate Minchol's sharp, tactical buzz-cut on Sora would be a comedic, aesthetic disaster. Sora's hair was simply too soft and too light to hold the intense texture required.
Shina was a stickler for perfection, but he was also exhausted. And the idea of gently letting Sora discover that his personality was too soft for a "bad boy" look—by giving him a look that would clearly not work—was strangely tempting.
"Alright, Sora-san," Shina sighed, pulling out his travel shears. "But you gotta sit still, aye. And you gotta promise that if it looks bad, you can't be cryin' to the Master about it."
"I promise!" Sora cheered, scrambling onto a stool.
Shina began to work, his movements precise and professional, skills honed on boat decks. He meticulously trimmed Sora's soft, light hair, creating a short, textured cut that attempted to mimic the intensity of Minchol's military discipline.
As predicted, the result was less "tactical enforcement" and more "charming, slightly messy toddler." The soft hair refused to hold the sharp spikes, instead creating a feathery texture that only highlighted Sora's immense, innocent eyes.
Sora immediately ran to the small mirror. He studied his reflection, his large eyes wide.
"Wow," Sora said, turning his head. "I look... very advanced! I look like I could really tell the snow rabbits who is boss now!"
Shina leaned against the wall, a small, weary, but protective smile playing on his lips. "Aye, Sora-san. You look very advanced. Now you gotta help me re-thread all those drawstrings, aye?"
Sora immediately turned his attention to the ruined pants. "Ooh! A new game! Is this a friendship chore?"
Shina sighed, the headache still throbbing, but the warmth of the new connection was undeniable. "Aye, Sora-san. That be exactly what it is."
The threat of Haru, the terror of his mind-powers, and the burning of the Purifier's Strike all faded into the background, temporarily replaced by the quiet, mundane battle against a pile of broken drawstrings and the strange comfort of his small, innocent friend.
Chapter 17: The New Roommate and the Shared Name🤣 The Laughter Breakthrough (Shina's Dormitory)
The process of re-threading the drawstrings was slow, tedious work. Shina had found a large safety pin to use as his guide, painstakingly pushing the cord through the casing. Sora, though enthusiastic, was mostly a distraction, but his presence was a better anchor than isolation.
Sora was attempting to "help" by pulling the fabric tight. At one point, he picked up a pair of Shina's extra leather pants—thick, heavy, and far too large—and attempted to try them on.
The small child vanished inside the cavernous leather waistline, the cuffs of the pants pooling entirely around his feet. He took one wobbly step, the massive, restrictive garment engulfing him, making him look like a lost, leather-clad toddler emerging from a tunnel.
Shina, already exhausted from the anxiety of the last few days, and pushed past his limit by the absurdity of the drawstrings, looked up at the sight.
It was too much.
A massive, loud burst of pure, unrestrained laughter erupted from Shina's chest. It was a wild, full-throated sound he hadn't made since he was a child—not the nervous chuckle or the relieved grin, but deep, curative release. He had to drop the safety pin, clutching his ribs as the heavy laughter shook his entire frame.
Sora, sensing the change in atmosphere, immediately joined in. He didn't know why Shina was laughing, but he found Shina's joy contagious. He flopped onto the floor, still wearing the immense pants, and let out a string of happy, high-pitched giggles.
They laughed until they were both breathless, Shina's eyes wet from the sheer, joyful exertion, the tension in his shoulders completely melted away.
🚪 The Unseen Secret
As the last gasps of laughter subsided, Shina wiped his eyes, a profound sense of peace settling over him. He started gathering the repaired pants, his mind immediately returning to organization.
He caught sight of the large, wooden underwear drawer—a heavy, locked storage box he kept hidden beneath his futon—which held his few personal, private items.
Shina quickly glanced at it, relief flooding him that Sora, in his destructive chaos, had never found the latch or been curious enough to explore that specific compartment. The contents of that drawer—his true, personal secrets—remained exactly where they belonged: hidden and safe. Sora never saw it, and the secret remained entirely with Shina.
🛑 The New Arrangement
A sharp, controlled rap on the sliding door cut the quiet domestic scene short.
"Mercer Raines," came the crisp, authoritative voice. "The Master said I would find you here."
The door slid open, revealing Deputy Minchol. He was freshly changed, having swapped his formal suit for practical, dark blue training fatigues, emphasizing his military build and the perfect, tactical precision of his jet-black, spiky hair.
Minchol took in the chaotic scene: the scattered pants, the small child (still half-wearing the giant leather trousers) giggling on the floor, and Shina, heavily clad in his leather layers, still slightly breathless from laughter.
Minchol's expression was utterly flat, betraying no judgment, only a clinical assessment of the strange environment.
"Deputy Minchol," Shina said, scrambling to his feet, instantly snapping back into military formality, all traces of humor wiped from his face. "I apologize for the mess, aye. Sora-san was—"
"Itsukasi-sama just finished our meeting," Minchol interrupted, his eyes sweeping the small dormitory. "Agent Voss has been assigned to a remote guest room for her surveillance post. Given the current lack of available barracks due to the Golem-breach repairs, the Master has assigned me temporary quarters here."
Shina blinked, horrified. "Here, sir? With me?"
"Indeed, Mercer Raines," Minchol confirmed, dropping a small, meticulously packed travel bag onto the floor. "The Master believes this proximity will allow me to 'assess your energetic impact on the local structure.' It is a temporary arrangement."
Minchol looked pointedly at the giant leather pants engulfing Sora.
"First order of business, Raines, is finding suitable clothing for the child. Second, I need a complete rundown of your curriculum and your recent uncontrolled energetic manifestations—specifically the visual and auditory ones. We share the name, and the Master believes there is a correlation worth investigating."
Shina stared at his new, unwanted roommate, the man who looked like his energetic twin and carried the same last name. He looked at the ruined drawstrings and the blissfully unaware Sora. His Hull had just acquired a new, extremely high-pressure structural element.
This ain't gonna be safe at all, aye, Shina thought, resignedly.
Minchol simply unzipped his bag, his posture radiating cool, professional curiosity. He was clearly looking forward to finding out everything about the unpredictable, messy young man named Shina Raines.
Chapter 18: The Hidden Trunk and Shared Pages🔒 The Professional Hull
The temporary situation was immediately awkward. Shina helped Sora out of the massive leather pants—a task complicated by the child's continued giggles—and quietly directed him toward the futon. Sora, exhausted by the day's activities and the sheer effort of being "advanced," was asleep almost instantly, lollipop stick still clutched in his small hand.
Minchol moved with swift, unsettling efficiency. While Shina was tucking Sora in, Minchol pulled his travel bag toward the small, wooden desk. He retrieved a sleek, heavily reinforced aluminum trunk—clearly designed to be crush and weather-proof—and quickly placed his few personal items inside.
Shina watched, fascinated, as Minchol placed a small, neatly folded pile of black boxer briefs into the trunk, alongside a few data chips and a sealed communication device. The trunk was instantly locked with a quiet, magnetic snick.
Minchol had effectively created a portable, high-security Hull for his personal life.
Shina's eyes widened with confirmation. He hides things, aye! Just like me! Shina immediately flashed back to his own hidden, locked underwear drawer beneath his futon, safe from Sora's curious hands.
He's family, Shina realized with startling clarity. He's a Raines. We both hide our vulnerabilities. He just uses a stronger box.
😠 The Scowl
Shina was so absorbed in this observation—the compelling proof that they shared a genetic and behavioral legacy—that he forgot to look away. He stood awkwardly by the ruined pants drawer, his gaze fixed on Minchol's rigid movements and the sleek, locked trunk.
Minchol finished his organization, his face set in a precise, neutral expression. He then looked up, his sharp, dark eyes meeting Shina's curious, searching gaze. He instantly picked up on the complex cocktail of curiosity, anxiety, and familial hope radiating from Shina.
Minchol's precise features tightened. His lips drew into a thin, deep scowl—a warning of cold, professional hostility.
"Mind your business, Raines," Minchol stated, his voice low and utterly devoid of warmth. "My personal affairs are not your concern. Focus on ensuring your chaotic Qi doesn't melt the tatami beneath my boots."
Shina retracted his gaze instantly, his cheeks flushing crimson with shame. He muttered an apology, retreated to his futon, and busied himself with the painstaking chore of re-threading one of the broken drawstrings. Minchol's hostility was a painful rejection of the connection Shina felt.
📚 Shared Discipline
Minchol, having established the boundary, made no further move to speak. He laid out his own sleep futon with military precision and then stripped down to a tight, dark undershirt and his black boxer briefs.
Shina was grateful for the distance and the dim light. He finished his drawstring, carefully folded the repaired pants, and then pulled out his own personal source of calm: a book. It was a well-worn, dog-eared paperback he kept tucked inside his travel pack.
Minchol, across the room, settled onto his futon. He reached into his travel bag—the only part of his belongings not sealed in the trunk—and pulled out his reading material.
The silence was total, broken only by the quiet breathing of the sleeping Sora.
Shina opened his book, finding the page he'd marked. It was a dense philosophical text, a classic analysis of the fundamental principles governing cosmic energies and morality. The title was boldly printed across the top of the page: Discipline and the Void: An Examination of Temporal Structures.
Across the room, Minchol opened his book, his eyes instantly focusing on the text.
Shina briefly looked up, watching the Deputy's intense, focused brow. He noticed the identical size and binding of Minchol's reading material.
Minchol was reading the exact same book. The same edition, the same dense text, the same author. Discipline and the Void: An Examination of Temporal Structures.
Neither spoke. Neither acknowledged the shared interest. They simply lay in the dim light, two men with the same intense focus, the same last name, the same hidden vulnerabilities, and the same desperate desire for order, separated only by the rigid distance of Minchol's hostility and the thick walls of the temporal theory they were both absorbed in.
The awkwardness had only been compounded. The silence of the night was heavy with unspoken questions.
Chapter 19: The Deputy's Soft Spot😴 The Middle of the Night (Acolyte Dormitory)
The dormitory was submerged in the deep, quiet cold of the Sapporo night. The oil lamp had been extinguished, leaving the room illuminated only by the faint, diffused light filtering in from the moon outside the window.
Deputy Minchol was sprawled across his futon. His rigid, disciplined posture had completely failed him in sleep. He was half-rolled onto his back, his body language communicating deep, unconscious exhaustion. He wore only a dark undershirt and his boxer briefs, the blanket having slipped down to his waist, revealing the powerful definition of his arms and shoulders. A faint bead of sweat was visible on his temple, suggesting he was deep in an active dream state.
Minchol's breathing hitched slightly. His lips moved, muttering a quick, indistinct word—a sound completely out of character for the clinical officer.
In his mind, Minchol was not investigating data breaches or analyzing temporal fissures. He was chasing a large, fluffy, pink unicorn across a field made of brightly colored building blocks. The unicorn was giggling and demanding he catch it so they could build a proper castle together, but Minchol couldn't catch its slippery, plastic horn. The frustration was immense, and the underlying desire for simple, whimsical creation was entirely at odds with his waking professional life.
Across the room, Shina Mercer Raines was cocooned in his futon. Unlike Minchol, Shina was fully clothed—still wearing his leather pants, dark shirt, and vest, having refused to shed a single layer of his protective Hull, even for sleep. He lay rigidly on his side, his body expressing the same deep anxiety and containment he maintained during the day. His spiky hair was slightly pressed on one side, but otherwise intact.
💧 The Small Observer
A low, gentle sigh broke the stillness. Sora woke up quietly from his sleeping bag, his internal clock having completed its cycle. He was dreaming about successfully gathering the snow rabbits into a single, cohesive party, but the effort had made him thirsty.
Sora sat up, his movements silent and practiced. He was a small child of few needs, and loud disruptions were not among them. He slid off the futon and padded barefoot across the room to the small water basin on the desk.
He carefully poured himself a cup of water, his small, newly "advanced" head barely reaching the basin, completely unaware that he was the only moving object in the tense, shared space.
As Sora was drinking, he passed Minchol's futon. Minchol stirred, his rigid facial features momentarily softening into a frown, struggling against the disruption. He mumbled something unintelligible about "the unicorn needs windows," then rolled onto his side, pulling the blanket up to his shoulders, instantly reclaiming his thermal and physical coverage.
Sora took another sip of water, completely ignoring the deputy. He finished his drink, padded back to his futon, and was asleep again within seconds, the dream of cohesive snow rabbit parties instantly resuming.
Shina, disturbed by the slight noise and the light shift in the room's energy, cracked his eyes open briefly. He saw the faint silhouette of Minchol settling back down, but mistook the movement for the deputy being alert. Shina immediately clamped his eyes shut and regulated his breathing, praying his Qi remained silent and unmoving beneath the suffocating layers of his clothes.
The quiet returned, leaving Minchol to his bizarre, whimsical dreams and Shina to his rigid, contained exhaustion.
Chapter 20: The Unicorn Dream and the Cultivation Uniform💥 The Morning Exposure (Acolyte Dormitory)
The early morning light, cold and gray, was just beginning to filter into the dormitory.
Deputy Minchol woke instantly, not gradually. His eyes snapped open with the immediate, focused alertness of a professional operative.
The first thing he registered was a small, intense presence near his feet.
Sora, having woken up, was kneeling beside the futon. He was meticulously examining Minchol's ankles, which were exposed beneath the edge of the blanket. Sora's small, newly "bad boy" spiked head bobbed with concentration.
Minchol's professional composure cracked violently.
"What are you doing, child!?" Minchol snapped, immediately sitting bolt upright and snatching the blanket to cover his exposed torso. He looked down at the child with a gaze that could peel paint.
Sora looked up, his face innocent. "I'm checking your ankles, Minchol-san! Shina-san says that bad boys get their scars from fighting, so I'm looking for where you fought the other bad boys! Do you have a lightning scar?"
Minchol felt a surge of professional fury. He immediately looked across the room at Shina, who was just rousing from his uncomfortable, fully-clothed sleep, rubbing his face.
"Raines!" Minchol snarled, his voice a low, furious grate. "Get the brat away from my personal space! Immediately!"
Shina, still hazy with sleep and instantly alert to the danger of Minchol's rage, stumbled off his futon. "Aye, sir! Sora-san, come here!"
🦄 The Accidental Betrayal
Sora, still completely oblivious to the chaos he was causing, stood up. He pointed a small, confident finger at Minchol's face.
"And you were having a dream about the pink unicorn, Minchol-san!" Sora announced brightly. "You told the unicorn it needed windows for its castle, but the unicorn wouldn't let you catch its horn!"
The silence that followed was so absolute, it seemed to absorb the light in the room.
Minchol, the rigid, professional Deputy, the man who compartmentalized his personal life in a locked, aluminum trunk, froze. The intense, dark hostility in his eyes immediately dissolved into a spectacular wave of mortification. His ears and the back of his neck instantly flushed a deep, alarming tomato red.
Across the room, Shina, who had been scrambling to grab Sora, also froze. He remembered the low muttering he had heard when Sora was getting water. He looked at Minchol's furious blush and realized the full, ridiculous truth.
Shina's face instantly mirrored Minchol's, turning a violent shade of red that contrasted sharply with his pale skin. The shared embarrassment over the Deputy's secret whimsy created an immediate, powerful, and utterly humiliating bond.
"I—I'm sorry, sir! I didn't mean to—" Shina stammered, unable to finish the apology without bursting into laughter.
Minchol slammed his hand down on the futon, the sound muffled by the blanket. "Silence!" he barked, his voice tight with humiliation. "Not one word, Raines! This is classified!"
The two men, both beet-red, both rigid with shared mortification, avoided eye contact entirely. The cold, tense atmosphere was suddenly thick with absurdity.
🛡️ The Cultivation Uniform
Minchol scrambled to regain control of the situation. He threw the blanket off, leaped off the futon, and marched to his aluminum trunk. He unlocked it with a sharp snick.
He pulled out a set of clothing that was neither a suit nor a casual robe: a dark, highly functional cultivation uniform. It was cut with the precision of his suits but made of thick, durable, dark material, reinforced at the shoulders and elbows. It looked less like traditional attire and more like tactical armor designed for high-stress energetic environments.
Minchol dressed with military speed, regaining his composure as the armor-like fabric covered him. His movements were clipped and efficient.
"We are going for morning muster and breakfast, Raines," Minchol stated, his voice now back to its clinical, severe tone. "I will brief you on Agent Voss's movements while we walk. And you will not—under any circumstances—mention the Unicorn Protocol again."
Shina, still red-faced but quickly regaining his functional calm, pulled his coat on. "Aye, sir. Protocol understood, aye."
"Yay! Breakfast!" Sora cheered, finally convinced the bad boy discussion was over. He ran ahead, waiting eagerly at the door.
Minchol stared at Shina for one long, severe moment, a silent warning passing between them. Then, with a curt nod, he led the way out.
Shina followed, trying to keep up with the Deputy's long stride, with the four-year-old Sora enthusiastically trailing behind, the newest and smallest, yet most effective, stress-test to the Deputy's rigid Hull.
Chapter 21: The Tactical Silence and the Territorial Glare🥞 The Breakfast Battle (Sect Dining Hall)
The dining hall of the Sapporo Sect was a large, austere space filled with the low murmur of morning prayers and the clink of porcelain. Sect Master Itsukasi presided from the head table, maintaining a silent, watchful discipline.
Shina, Minchol, and Sora sat together, the tension between the two adults thick enough to spread on a pancake. Both Shina and Minchol were focused on eating their traditional morning rice and vegetable porridge, deliberately ignoring the other's existence.
Minchol, clad in his severe, dark cultivation uniform, ate with military precision, his movements economical. Shina, still wearing his full, heavy leather layers, ate quickly but nervously, constantly monitoring Minchol's suppressed irritation.
Sora, however, had immediately discovered the basket of fluffy, golden pancakes at the center of the table.
Sora, operating under the assumption that they were all one big 'party', saw no need for boundaries. He leaned across Shina, his small, newly-spiked head bobbing, and with two swift, sticky fingers, plucked a pancake straight off the edge of Minchol's plate.
Minchol's jaw immediately clenched. His fork, poised halfway to his mouth, froze. A muscle jumped in his temple.
Sora, completely oblivious, took a massive bite, leaving a smear of syrup on his cheek. He then eyed the next pancake on Minchol's plate.
Minchol took a slow, deep breath, regulating his Qi flow to suppress the instinctive, professional fury. He glanced down the table at Itsukasi, who met his gaze with a faint, knowing smirk. Minchol understood the command: No disciplinary chaos in the dining hall.
Minchol remained silent. He carefully lowered his fork, picked up the remaining two pancakes on his plate, and quickly deposited them onto Shina's plate. The message was clear: If I don't possess them, the child cannot steal them.
Shina, utterly mortified by the maneuver, avoided Minchol's gaze and quickly piled the stolen pancakes onto a side plate, hoping to save them for later without attracting more attention.
🔪 The Territorial Glare
It was at this moment that a new source of agitation entered the scene.
Jukaro, the First Disciple who had mocked Shina earlier, walked into the dining hall. He had been released from his disciplinary meditation, and his eyes, cold and assessing, immediately locked onto the trio at the table.
Jukaro saw the foreign Deputy in the pristine tactical uniform, sitting where only high-ranking sect members were permitted. He saw the disgraced acolyte, Shina, sitting beside him. Jukaro registered the obvious, silent discomfort and Minchol's palpable air of suppression.
A slow, cold mocking smile stretched across Jukaro's face. He clearly assumed Minchol was another stiff, overbearing outsider brought in to deal with the "Hashima problem." Jukaro saw an easy target—a high-status individual under visible stress, who could be challenged through subtle disrespect.
Jukaro paused near the table, not speaking, but directing an intense, territorial glare at Minchol. The look was a challenge: You don't belong here, outsider. Jukaro then gave a minute, theatrical eye roll directed at Shina, before settling at a nearby table.
Shina noticed the exchange instantly. He felt a sudden, sharp, almost protective fear for the Deputy.
Shina knew Jukaro only dealt with social scorn and minor Dao punishments. But Minchol—Shina had seen his rigid posture, heard his commanding voice, and sensed his immense, disciplined power. Minchol was a police deputy, an operative who handled security breaches and energetic threats. Disrespect was not a social slight to Minchol; it was a security risk.
Oh no, aye, Shina thought, cautiously picking up his spoon. Jukaro has no idea who he just challenged. He thinks he's playin' with a monk, but he just drew on a cop.
Shina knew, with absolute certainty, that Jukaro was in for a profound and painful lesson in professional courtesy. The Deputy's silence was not weakness; it was a tactical accumulation of offenses.
Minchol finished his porridge, his face betraying nothing, but his spiky black hair seemed to vibrate with controlled menace. He was aware of every flicker of Jukaro's hostility.
Minchol set down his spoon with a quiet, final clink, turned his head slowly, and met Jukaro's arrogant gaze with a chilling, clinical assessment. The Deputy gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod—a silent acknowledgment that the challenge had been registered and would be addressed.
Minchol then rose from the table, his tactical uniform perfectly smooth. He waited for Shina to hastily stand.
"We are proceeding to the briefing, Raines," Minchol stated. "Now."
Shina grabbed Sora's hand, relieved to escape the volatile environment. As they left, Shina glanced back at Jukaro, who was still smirking.
You dug your own grave, aye, Shina thought, a grim satisfaction settling in his stomach. And Minchol is gonna bury ye with paperwork.
Chapter 22: The Silent Justice and the Artificial Core🧘 The Mass Formation (Main Courtyard)
The Sapporo Sect gathered in the main courtyard for the first large-scale cultivation training session Shina had attended. The vast space was filled with hundreds of acolytes and disciples, all standing in ordered ranks on the snow-dusted stone. The atmosphere was serious, unified, and intimidating.
Shina stood in the back row with the provisional acolytes. He was intensely nervous. Surrounded by so many practitioners, the constant noise of competing Qi signatures made his internal Hull feel precarious. His primary fear, however, was social: standing among so many eyes, he was terrified of a sudden, explosive failure—a surge of heat melting the tatami, or worse, a tear in his clothing exposing him to ridicule.
He wore his triple layers—vest, leather shirt, and tank top—as an absolute fortress. He pressed his scarred Purifier's finger against his palm, anchoring himself against the fear. He focused on the discipline, determined to pass unnoticed.
Thankfully, the routine was simple: a mass synchronization of the Flow of the Winter Current Dao form. Shina focused, his thermal Hashima Qi resisting the cold, structured flow of the Sapporo style, but his Hull held. He flowed the energy inward, keeping the volatile fire contained. He passed the session without incident. His clothing remained intact, his sweat was absorbed by the leather, and no one gave him a second glance.
🚪 The Routine Check
Deputy Minchol stood in the front, his presence sharp and tactical, clad in his dark cultivation uniform. His Qi signature—a precise, cold blue-white flow—was utterly unique. It was disciplined, controlled, and flowed with the unmistakable regularity of a perfectly engineered machine.
Near the end of the session, Minchol broke protocol. He turned, his gaze cutting directly through the crowd until it landed, with lethal precision, on Jukaro.
"First Disciple Jukaro," Minchol called out, his voice ringing with cold authority. "Your Dao flow this morning is registering an unexpected thermal spike. I require an immediate, unscheduled routine assessment of your physical Qi channels. Report to the north maintenance room, now."
The request was strange, but Minchol's rank and the severity of his tone precluded argument. Jukaro, pale with confusion but unable to refuse a direct order from a visiting high-ranking deputy, bowed stiffly and walked toward the small, windowed maintenance annex.
Minchol followed, his eyes briefly meeting Shina's. Shina knew instantly what was about to happen. He understood the Deputy's cold anger; Minchol was now delivering the punishment for the insult at the breakfast table.
🥊 The Silent Justice
Minchol and Jukaro entered the maintenance room and slid the wooden door shut.
The remaining practitioners continued their quiet, synchronized cultivation, adhering to the deep discipline of the sect. Sect Master Itsukasi, standing at the head of the courtyard, watched the entire exchange, but gave no sign of intervention, his silver hair catching the morning sun.
Shina was focused on the small annex window. He couldn't hear anything, but the silhouettes inside the room became visible.
Minchol's silhouette moved first—sharp, fast, and aggressively efficient. There was the clear, jarring motion of a brief struggle, followed by the silhouette of Jukaro collapsing against the window frame. Minchol's movements were clinical; there was no wasted motion, only direct, focused violence. Shina momentarily saw a brief, dull glint of metal on Minchol's hands—the obvious gleam of specialized knuckle bracers or weighted rings.
The scene lasted less than a minute. The physical Qi assessment was delivered not with forms or Dao attacks, but with brutal, tactical, non-lethal force.
Finally, Minchol's silhouette stood upright, adjusted the collar of his cultivation uniform, and slid the door open.
⚙️ The Artificial Core
Minchol and Jukaro walked back into the courtyard. Jukaro's face was bruised—a clear, dark contusion bloomed across his cheekbone, and his lip was split. His movements were shaky, but he forced himself back into the formation.
Not a single disciple, and crucially, not Sect Master Itsukasi, acknowledged the obvious trauma. The silence spoke volumes: Minchol's brand of justice, though violent, was considered justified, necessary, and permitted for the security of the sect.
Minchol took his place back in the front rank. He resumed his cultivation, his Qi flow immediately engaging—a cold, rhythmic pulse of blue-white energy.
Shina watched the flow with his Purifier's Insight, sensing its core truth. He realized Minchol didn't possess natural Dao power or spiritual energy. His entire system was reliant on an artificial source—a highly regulated, cold energetic core, likely housed internally, providing the Deputy with disciplined, synthetic Qi. Minchol's stability wasn't trained; it was engineered.
Minchol's eyes, cold and severe, flicked over the formation, locking briefly onto Jukaro.
Jukaro's mocking smile was gone. His face was a mask of stark fear. He understood now that he hadn't challenged a rival disciple, but a highly effective, authorized police weapon. He lowered his head, his concentration broken, his rivalry completely eclipsed by terror.
Shina, protected by his layers and his anonymity, felt a deep, complex sense of satisfaction. The mess had been dealt with swiftly and permanently. He turned his focus back to his own difficult, contained energy, knowing that the man who shared his name was simultaneously his protector, his roommate, and his most potent danger.
Chapter 23: The Disliked and the Displaced🧘 Displaced Meditation (Mid-Morning)
The cultivation session ended abruptly, followed by the sect-wide instruction for two hours of focused meditation. Disciples dispersed quickly, seeking the quiet solitude of their own quarters to regulate their Qi and internalize the morning's lessons.
Minchol immediately approached Shina as the crowd thinned.
"Raines," Minchol stated, his voice low and clinical, referencing the morning's brutality as if discussing a weather report. "Your thermal instability, combined with the child's chaotic presence, makes my room unsuitable for synchronized meditation. My core cannot risk that high level of external interference."
Minchol pointed toward the small, unused alcove in the corridor just outside their dormitory door. "You will conduct your meditation here. The stone is thick, and the open air will better dissipate your ambient heat."
Shina nodded quickly, accustomed to being treated as an energetic hazard. "Aye, sir. The hallway is fine, aye."
💀 The Warning
Minchol walked past him, pausing as he reached the dormitory door. He didn't look at Shina, his eyes fixed on the door's handle, but his words were sharp and deliberate.
"Understand this, Raines," Minchol said, his voice dropping to a low, chilling register. "My professional duty demands precision. My methods with Jukaro were severe, yes. But I do not waste energy or effort on those I merely disregard."
He finally turned his head, his dark, tactical gaze locking onto Shina's.
"I reserve that level of effort and attention only for those I genuinely dislike," Minchol stated, his voice a cold promise. "Jukaro disrespected the mission and the order of this sector. He was punished accordingly."
Minchol's tone conveyed a lethal implication: Your existence is inherently chaotic. Do not give me a reason to dislike you enough to focus my attention on you.
Shina flinched violently. He felt the words pierce through his triple-layered Hull. His heart hammered, and the fear was immediate and total. He wasn't afraid of the physical punishment; he was terrified of becoming Minchol's target of intense, focused dislike.
"Aye, sir," Shina managed, his voice barely a rasp. He nodded his head fiercely, his newly-spiked hair vibrating with the intensity of his agreement. "I won't—I won't be givin' ye a reason, aye. I promise."
Minchol gave a curt, satisfied nod. "See that you don't. Interruption of my meditative state will be considered an act of severe interference."
He slid the door open and stepped inside the dormitory, leaving Shina alone in the quiet corridor.
Shina walked immediately to the chosen alcove. He sat cross-legged on the cold stone, ignoring the discomfort. He closed his eyes and immediately dropped into the deepest concentration he could manage. He focused on reinforcing the Hull—not just against his own internal heat, but against the sheer, paralyzing terror of becoming the focus of Deputy Minchol's justified, yet brutal, dislike.
Both men began their two hours of solitary, disciplined meditation, separated only by a thick wooden door and Minchol's severe warning.
Chapter 24: The Unstable Zenith and the Winter Echo💥 The Hallway Zenith (Mid-Meditation)
Shina sat in the alcove of the corridor, his back pressed against the cold, thick stone. He was deep into his meditation, forcing the turbulent Hashima Qi into the needle-thin channel of the Focused Purge. Minchol's threatening presence on the other side of the wall acted as a potent, constant pressure, strengthening Shina's resolve.
He pushed his energy past the pain of the friction, past the point of endurance. He was aiming for stability, but his core energy had other plans. The containment wasn't just stabilizing; it was being compressed—a volatile substance being condensed beyond its natural state.
Suddenly, Shina felt a searing, immense release. His entire body vibrated, and the air around him shimmered. This was a qualitative leap: the Hull didn't just contain the energy; it was now structurally bonded to it. The Hashima Qi was not just sealed; it was an obedient resident, fully available for immediate, powerful use.
WHOOM.
A violent, explosive wave of contained heat radiated outward from his core. The immediate physical consequence of this intense energetic stabilization was devastating to his outer layer.
His dark leather shirt—already stressed by his previous activities and the sheer thermal load—instantly disintegrated along the seams and across the chest, shedding its structure. The thick, tough leather shredded into numerous strips and fell away from his body, smoking slightly where the internal heat had violently separated the fibers.
Shina was left sitting in the hallway, his sleeveless muscle shirt tank top completely intact beneath the ruins of the leather shirt, but utterly exposed by the loss of his thick outer shell.
😱 The Panic and the Backup Shirt
Shina's meditative focus instantly shattered.
He looked down at the pile of ruined leather on the floor and then at his exposed arms and tank top. The breakthrough was meaningless; the violation of his Hull was catastrophic.
"NO! MESSY! Not again, aye!" Shina hissed, his eyes wide with a combination of shame and terror.
He scrambled frantically, abandoning his perfect meditative posture. He grabbed his emergency spare shirt—a simple, thick canvas button-up he kept folded by his side—and wrestled himself into it with panicked speed, buttoning it up to his chin over the tank top. He then violently kicked the smoking, shredded remnants of the leather into the corner, out of sight.
The process of covering up took less than ten seconds, but the adrenaline rush was immense. He hunched over, breathing heavily, utterly convinced the entire sect had witnessed his brief moment of exposure.
🤯 The Master's Shock (Itsukasi's Quarters)
In his private compound, Sect Master Itsukasi felt the massive, focused energetic pulse. He stood instantly, his gaze fixed on the direction of Shina's dorm.
That speed, Itsukasi thought, his two hundred years of cultivation knowledge reeling. He achieved the Stabilized Hull/Qi Bond in less than two weeks of concentrated effort. That should take years.
Itsukasi moved swiftly to the window, looking out toward the courtyard, ignoring the momentary, internal static of the energy blast. He wasn't concerned about the shredded clothing; he was concerned about the unprecedented interval of progress.
He truly is the culmination of the Purifier legacy, Itsukasi realized, a profound sense of shock mixing with awe. His chaotic energy, when focused by anxiety, accelerates his growth exponentially. The strongest person in the world... it is possible.
The magnitude of Shina's potential hung heavy in the air.
🌨️ The Ryota Echo (Izena Island Shoreline)
(CUT TO: IZENA ISLAND, OKINAWA - DISTANT PAST)
The sun is warm, and the waves are gentle. Six-year-old Ryota is stomping through the sand, his tiny shoes leaving deep prints, trying to keep up with the long, easy stride of twenty-year-old Marcus, who carries a large, curved staff. They are walking along the shoreline, training the fundamental principles of the Kanoji Path.
Ryota, bundled in a light robe, suddenly stops. He scrunches up his nose.
"Hah-choo!" Ryota sneezed violently, rubbing his nose on his sleeve.
"Did you catch cold, Ryota?" Marcus asked, turning back.
Ryota shook his head, looking out at the calm ocean. "No, Marcus-sensei. But I felt something cold and hot at the same time. And… and I think someone was talking about me being strong."
Marcus chuckled, ruffling the boy's hair. "You think too much, little one. The ocean just shifts sometimes."
Ryota sneezes again, a tiny burst of ice particles scattering on the beach.
(CUT BACK TO: SAPPOURO SECT)
🚨 The Immediate Blizzard
The faint, distant energy signature—the sneeze—reached the Sapporo Sect instantaneously, traveling across space and time.
Itsukasi, still watching the courtyard, felt a sudden, profound drop in temperature—a deep, ancient cold that was the signature of the Kanoji Path of control. The sudden, chaotic drop in temperature was not natural.
A fierce, localized blizzard immediately whipped through the courtyard. Snow, which had been gently falling, now swirled in blinding, stinging torrents. The temperature plummeted several degrees in seconds.
Itsukasi's eyes narrowed, all shock and awe gone, replaced by severe alarm. That level of chaotic displacement... Ryota is using the power.
Itsukasi spun around, his voice booming with immediate, high-level command that cut through the whistling wind.
"HALT ALL MEDITATION! ALL DISCIPLES TO SHELTER!" Itsukasi roared, his voice amplified by his own Qi. "IMMEDIATE HUNKERING! THIS IS A KANOJI LEAK!"
The disciples, stunned by the sudden, violent blizzard, scrambled for cover.
Shina, still breathless and seated in the corridor, looked out at the sudden, unnatural snowstorm and felt a massive, powerful wave of cold energy slam against his thermal core. He didn't know the cause, but the sudden, immense power in the air was terrifying. His breakthrough was completely forgotten, replaced by the sheer existential threat of the unexpected blizzard.
Chapter 25: The Dimensional Snap and the Irritated Text🧤 The Dimensional Snap (Sapporo Courtyard)
The courtyard was a scene of blinding, unnatural chaos. The howling blizzard, generated by the distant, uncontrolled power of a Kanoji disciple, pressed violently against the sect's shields. Acolytes were scrambling for the nearest shelter, adhering to Itsukasi's panicked command.
Shina, huddled in the alcove, felt the intense cold fighting his internal thermal core—a massive, painful energetic conflict. His recent breakthrough was instantly tested by this immense, external power.
Suddenly, the air directly in the center of the raging blizzard rippled—a localized, shimmering disturbance that looked like heat haze on a freezing day.
With a soft, almost imperceptible pop, the blizzard's epicenter was replaced by a small, brightly dressed figure.
Ryota stood there, perfectly comfortable and utterly out of place. He was wearing a ridiculously thick, brightly colored warm parka and puffy snow pants, a stark and amusing contrast to the wind-whipped robes and tactical gear of the Sapporo cultivators. His divine mana, pure and warm, entirely shielded him from the storm he had just caused.
Ryota, perpetually six years old and full of chaotic innocence, looked around at the sudden silence his arrival caused. He didn't have cultivation; he simply possessed divine mana that bent reality to his whim.
He let out a high-pitched, childish giggle that echoed through the now-stilled wind.
"Wow! This snow is funny!" Ryota chirped, completely unaware of the panic he had inflicted. He put his hands up, snapped his fingers with an audible crack, and the violent, unnatural blizzard vanished. The air immediately calmed, leaving behind only a thick, fresh layer of snow.
Ryota spotted a familiar face near the dormitory entrance.
"Sora-san!" Ryota called out, waving enthusiastically with his mittened hand. "I came to say hello! I just needed to try out the big storm!"
Sora, utterly unfazed by the sudden dimensional travel or the appearance of the brightly colored child, waved back with equal enthusiasm. "Hello, Ryota-san! That was a really fun storm! Did you make it with your best friends?"
Ryota gave Sora a massive, blinding grin, pleased with the positive review. He then gave the whole courtyard a final, energetic wave.
With a final, silent blink, Ryota disappeared as suddenly as he had arrived, his mana withdrawing and snapping him back to his home in Keya, Okinawa, leaving behind only the scent of fresh snow and confusion.
😩 The Groan and the Explanation
The entire sect—from the junior acolytes to the high-ranking disciples like Minchol and the still-bruised Jukaro—were utterly stunned. They stared at the empty spot where a child in snow gear had just theatrically violated the laws of physics and climate.
Sect Master Itsukasi, standing rigid in the courtyard, let out a profound, weary groan. He pressed his fingers against his temples, frustration warring with the immense respect he held for the raw power he had just witnessed. Ryota, though a master of the Kanoji Path's potential, was notorious for his flippant disregard for rules and timing.
He did it again, Itsukasi thought, shaking his head. He didn't contain the flow, and then he couldn't resist a dramatic entry.
Itsukasi raised his voice, his calm returning. "The disruption is over. Jukaro, go see the healers. Everyone else—"
He paused, looking at the stunned faces of his sect, and then the utterly bewildered face of Deputy Minchol.
"I will explain everything," Itsukasi stated, his tone brooking no argument. "The nature of the Kanoji Path and its practitioners will be discussed. For now, the meditation period is officially concluded. All disciples and guests, proceed to the dining hall for lunch. Now."
📧 The Transmission of Annoyance
As the disciples slowly began to move, whispering urgently about the "Kanoji child," Itsukasi activated his cultivation transmission. This was a direct, energetic broadcast used for long-distance communication with other high-level cultivators.
He aimed the transmission not at a device, but at Ryota's known energetic signature—a blast of pure, formalized Qi carrying a single, irritable message.
RYOTA, the message began, pulsing with professional exasperation, YOUR UNANNOUNCED TEMPORAL-SPATIAL MANIFESTATIONS ARE CAUSING CLIMATIC DAMAGE AND DISRUPTING MY SECURITY PROTOCOLS. FOLLOW THE RULES. I WILL NOT HAVE TO REMIND YOU AGAIN. —ITSUKASI.
Miles away, in a sunny, quiet home in Keya, Okinawa, Ryota—already back in shorts and a t-shirt—paused from playing with a handful of glowing marbles. He felt the sharp, structured message of annoyance hit his divine sense.
Ryota just shrugged, his small face thoughtful. "Oh! Right! Sorry, Itsukasi-sensei!" he whispered, then promptly forgot about the warning and returned to his game.
In the Sapporo dining hall, the sect tried to eat lunch, but all eyes were on the visibly frustrated Sect Master, and the utterly composed Deputy Minchol, who now had an entirely new security breach to report to Agent Lena Voss.
Chapter 26: The Tactical Undressing and the Confused Protector😴 The Afternoon Respite (Acolyte Dormitory)
The post-lunch period was allocated for rest and light meditation, a necessary recovery time after the chaos of the morning and the unexpected visit from Ryota.
Shina and Minchol returned to their dormitory. The air was thick with unspoken tension from the Ryota incident and the awkwardness of their cohabitation. Sora was already on his futon, snoring softly, exhausted by his dimensional travels and high-energy excitement.
Minchol immediately initiated his sleep protocol. He stripped off his heavy cultivation uniform jacket and dark undershirt, setting them neatly aside. This was a rare, necessary concession to rest: he slept shirtless above the waist, allowing his tightly controlled musculature to finally breathe and dissipate the residual heat from the morning's training and enforcement.
He did not, however, risk full undress. He quickly swapped his boxer briefs for a pair of plain, dark pajama bottoms, ensuring that his ankles and the lower half of his body were safely covered against any potential snooping by the precocious four-year-old. The hidden drawers and his private trunk remained locked.
Shina, meanwhile, looked on, his face rigid with discomfort at Minchol's casual exposure. Shina lay down on his own futon, still fully clothed in his emergency canvas shirt, heavy pants, and vest—a layered fortress against exposure and vulnerability. He curled tightly into a ball, trying to ignore the Deputy's exposed back.
Minchol settled onto his futon and was instantly still, sinking into the deep state of rest.
🥋 The Breach and the Subdual
The silence lasted only five minutes.
The dormitory door suddenly slid open with aggressive force. Three mid-level disciples—obviously Jukaro's lackeys—burst into the room. They were looking for revenge, not on Minchol, but on the perceived weakness that allowed the outsider to strike their leader.
"Mercer Raines!" the lead lackey hissed, spotting Shina, who was still fully bundled and attempting to disappear. "You think you can hide behind the police lapdog? Come outside and face—"
The lackey's voice choked off. He hadn't accounted for the Deputy's reaction speed.
Minchol was awake the instant the door crashed open. He didn't rise; he moved.
Before the first disciple could take another step, Minchol executed a brutal, efficient sweeping judo throw directly from his supine position on the futon. He pivoted, using the strength of his core and legs, and sent the lackey sprawling into the opposite wall.
The second lackey lunged. Minchol rolled onto his knees, used the edge of the futon for leverage, and executed a sharp leg reap, sending the disciple crashing over the first.
The third disciple, seeing the sudden, silent, professional violence, froze in terror.
Minchol stood up swiftly, his bare chest taut with suppressed adrenaline. He didn't look angry; he looked lethal. He grabbed the third disciple by the collar, spun him around, and applied a tight pressure point lock to his neck, forcing the disciple's eyes to bulge with pain.
"This is not your space," Minchol stated, his voice a low, terrifying growl. "Withdraw."
He shoved the disciple hard out the door. The third disciple, terrified, scrambled to drag his stunned comrades out of the room, slamming the door shut behind them.
🛡️ The Misinterpretation
Shina was paralyzed, watching the display of effortless, brutal efficiency. He watched the man who shared his name—the man who hid his heart and read the same theoretical texts—defend him.
A wave of overwhelming gratitude and kinship washed over Shina. Minchol had been resting, was shirtless, and had still risked injury to defend the vulnerable target of the sect's scorn.
"M-Minchol-san," Shina whispered, standing up slowly. "Thank you, aye. You... you defended me."
Minchol returned to his futon, pulling the blanket over his torso. He looked at Shina with cold, weary irritation.
"I defended my quarters, Raines," Minchol stated flatly, adjusting his pillow. "Your continued presence here is an instruction from the Sect Master. I will not have external factors disrupting my environment or my rest, regardless of whether they are a four-year-old or petty delinquents seeking retribution for their bruised leader."
Minchol paused, giving Shina one last, severe look. "Do not assume my actions are motivated by sentiment. They are motivated by order."
Shina flinched, the warmth of gratitude instantly freezing into the realization that, once again, his emotional assessment was wrong. He nodded silently, retreating back to his futon, the heavy weight of his clothing suddenly feeling like a necessary burden.
Minchol settled back down, closed his eyes, and instantly dropped into a deep, unconscious state.
In his mind, the pink unicorn had just finished painting the castle in primary colors and was now trying to teach Minchol how to properly ride a giant, fluffy, yellow marshmallow. Minchol was having extreme difficulty balancing, and the feeling of failure was intensely frustrating. The Deputy was deeply asleep, completely unaware of the whimsical absurdity playing out in his subconscious.
Author's Note: Minchol's Wardrobe Integrity
Hello readers!
A quick reassurance regarding our favorite intensely private and highly efficient Deputy, Minchol Raines:
You may have noticed that in the preceding chapters of Shina: The OP Cultivator, Minchol has been subject to accidental exposure (sleeping shirtless, having his socks checked by a four-year-old, etc.). This was necessary to highlight his profound need for security and contrast it with Shina's emotional vulnerability.
However, we understand and respect Minchol's intense dedication to professional decorum and his personal Hull!
Therefore, we want to formally confirm that in his standalone book, Minchol: The Soule Police Officer (which focuses on his investigative work, tactical prowess, and intense professionalism), Minchol will not have unexpected or gratuitous shirtless or boxer scenes.
While Minchol is human and does wear casual clothing and full pajamas at home (when his security protocols allow it), his focus in his own narrative will remain strictly on order, justice, and the suppression of temporal crime. His public appearances will maintain full professional decorum.
Thank you for following the story!
