Chapter 14 - The Shard Awakens

Chapter 14

Friday arrived with a strange mix of anticipation and nerves. Liana could barely focus in class, her mind wandering to the walk home with Aiden and the quiet moments they had shared earlier in the week. There was a fluttering in her chest that refused to be ignored, a growing awareness of something she hadn't felt before: the way her feelings for him were shifting.

‎The hallways felt different today. Even Brianna, with her sharp stares and subtle jabs, seemed almost secondary to the excitement coursing through Liana's veins. She had grown stronger, braver, but this new feeling—this quiet pull toward Aiden—was something she couldn't yet name.

‎By lunch, she found her usual corner table and took a seat, tray in hand. Aiden appeared shortly after, carrying two bottles of juice and a small bag of snacks, just as he had done all week.

‎"Thought you might need a little energy boost," he said, handing her a bottle with that soft smile that made her heart flutter.

‎"Thanks," she murmured, feeling a warmth spread through her chest.

‎As they ate, they talked quietly about schoolwork, their voices low enough that no one else could hear. But today, there was a subtle shift. Every glance Aiden gave her felt charged with something more. Every word lingered longer, warmer, as if carrying a hidden message meant only for her.

‎---

‎The moment that changed everything came unexpectedly. Aiden reached across the table, lightly brushing his hand against hers as he passed her the bag of snacks. The contact was brief, almost accidental—but it was enough.

‎Liana felt a sudden jolt of electricity, a spark that seemed to travel from her fingertips straight to her heart. She gasped softly, startled by the intensity of the feeling. Her chest tightened, and for the first time, she realized just how much she wanted to be close to him—not just beside him, but in a way that mattered.

‎Aiden's eyes met hers, a flicker of curiosity and something unspoken in his gaze. "You okay?" he asked softly.

‎"I… I think so," she replied, trying to steady her voice. But the truth was, she wasn't sure. Her feelings were awakening in a way that was thrilling and terrifying at the same time.

‎For the first time, Liana understood what it meant for her world to change in an instant. A simple touch, a shared glance, and suddenly, everything felt more alive, more intense. The safe routines of school, the quiet corners, even the presence of Brianna—all of it faded against the gravity of what was happening between her and Aiden.

‎---

‎After lunch, they walked together outside, letting the warmth of the afternoon sun wash over them. Liana felt lighter, freer, yet a new tension lingered: the fear that Brianna's watchful eyes might still interfere, that something could disrupt the fragile closeness they had built.

‎Aiden seemed to sense her unease. "Hey," he said, stopping and turning to face her, "don't let anyone make you doubt yourself. Especially her. You're… amazing, just as you are."

‎Her cheeks warmed, and a small, shy smile formed. "Thanks," she whispered, her heart pounding.

‎He stepped a little closer, just enough that the space between them felt charged with possibility. "I mean it, Liana. You're not invisible anymore. And you won't be—at least, not to me."

‎For a moment, time seemed to pause. The distant sounds of school faded, the chatter of students and the hum of passing cars receding into silence. All that remained was the space between them—and the realization that her heart had awakened in a way she couldn't ignore.

‎Liana knew that her world had shifted irreversibly. Something inside her had changed, and there was no going back. The spark had been lit, and now, all that remained was to navigate the thrilling, terrifying, and beautiful possibilities ahead—with Aiden by her side.

‎And somewhere, deep in the back of her mind, Liana knew that Brianna's shadow would not be the only challenge she would face. But for the first time, she felt ready to confront it, with courage, with heart—and with someone who truly saw her.
