Chapter 4 - 4 The Rift That Shouldn’t Exist

Night in Haven Core was never truly dark.

Even when the outer generators dimmed to conserve energy, the underground city retained its cold blue glow — thin veins of artificial light running along walls and ceilings like lifelines. The illumination was soft but constant, a silent reminder that humanity now depended on machines for something as simple as daylight.

Above them, the surface world belonged to ruin.

Kai lay on his bunk staring at the metallic ceiling. The faint hum of the ventilation system vibrated through the walls. Somewhere far off, pipes shifted and groaned — Haven Core settling into its nocturnal rhythm.

He hadn't slept.

Every time he drifted close, the memory returned.

That silhouette.

Not solid. Not shadow. Something in between.

A shape that fractured space around it like reality was a mirror it had cracked simply by existing.

And the voice.

Not heard with ears.

Felt.

Like pressure against bone.

Chosen.

Kai turned onto his side and shut his eyes tightly.

It came back instantly.

The warped sky. The collapsing horizon. That towering presence bending toward him.

Chosen.

He shot upright, breath shallow.

"Chosen for what?" he muttered. "And why me?"

His Fragment pulsed faintly beneath his collarbone — a soft silver glow under skin that had only appeared days ago. It had been dormant for seventy years, according to history. The Eclipse relics weren't supposed to awaken anymore.

Yet his had.

And now something was answering it.

A knock sounded against his door.

Three measured taps.

"Kai. Open up."

Rei.

Her voice was calm as ever, but something beneath it was strained.

He slid off the bunk and keyed the lock. The door hissed open.

Rei stepped in without hesitation. Her dark hair was tied back, posture rigid, eyes scanning his face with quiet calculation.

"You're awake," she said.

Kai rubbed the back of his neck. "Wasn't planning on it."

"No," she replied. "You wouldn't be."

He studied her. "You didn't sleep either."

A small pause.

"It doesn't matter."

Which meant no.

Rei rarely admitted to being unsettled. The fact she was here instead of in her quarters said enough.

"Arden's in Lab Sector C," she continued. "He finished analyzing the residue sample."

Kai grabbed his jacket from the chair. "So we're breaking night protocol."

"Yes."

He smirked faintly. "I like when you're rebellious."

"This isn't rebellion," she said flatly. "It's necessity."

They slipped into the corridor.

Haven Core's residential wing was quiet. Doors sealed. Lights dimmed. The artificial night cycle had begun hours ago.

The city stretched in layered rings beneath the earth — reinforced steel, reclaimed stone, and salvaged tech from the old world integrated into a single defensive ecosystem. It was humanity's refuge after the Riven Gate tore open the sky seventy years ago.

Kai glanced up at the curved ceiling overhead.

He had grown up underground.

The real sky felt like a myth.

"Do you think we're making a mistake?" he asked quietly as they walked.

"Yes," Rei answered immediately.

He huffed a laugh.

She continued after a beat, "But mistakes are sometimes required to avoid extinction."

That was the most comforting thing she could offer.

They reached the research wing. The security panel blinked as Rei overrode it with her clearance chip.

The doors slid open.

Lab Sector C was lit brighter than the rest of the facility. Neon strips traced the floor. Holographic monitors hovered above circular workstations.

Arden stood at the center table, sleeves rolled up, eyes locked onto a rotating projection.

"You're late," he said without looking up.

"It's past midnight," Kai replied. "We're committing illegal science."

"Which requires punctuality."

Rei stepped beside him. "What did you find?"

Arden tapped the console.

The projection expanded.

A three-dimensional model of the rift appeared — a spiraling tear in space-time rendered in luminous strands of broken light.

Kai's chest tightened instantly.

Even the simulation felt wrong.

Fracture lines pulsed outward from a central distortion. Not chaotic — patterned.

"That's not random destabilization," Rei said.

"No," Arden agreed. "It's structured."

He zoomed in.

"These energy signatures don't match demonic incursions, yokai spirit fractures, celestial gateways, or astral bleed-through events."

Kai frowned. "So what category does it fall under?"

Arden hesitated.

"None."

Silence settled over them.

Rei leaned closer to the projection. "You said earlier it predates demon invasions."

"I cross-referenced with pre-collapse archives," Arden replied. "This frequency pattern appears in fragments recovered from the original Eclipse battlegrounds."

Kai stiffened.

"The Eclipse?" he asked.

Arden nodded.

"But here's the anomaly."

He magnified the core of the rift.

A faint harmonic pulse rippled outward in repeating intervals.

"There's a resonance embedded in the tear," Arden said quietly. "Not natural. Not residual."

Kai's Fragment flared faintly beneath his skin.

His breath hitched.

"It's synchronized," Arden finished.

"With what?" Rei asked.

Arden turned slowly toward Kai.

"With him."

The lab lights flickered.

A pressure filled the air.

Not heat. Not cold.

Weight.

Ancient. Crushing.

Rei's eyes snapped to Kai's chest.

"Your Fragment—"

It exploded into light.

Silver radiance burst through his jacket.

Kai staggered backward as energy surged through him like liquid fire. His vision blurred.

The lab warped.

Sound stretched thin.

Shadows peeled from corners.

And then—

Darkness swallowed everything.

He was standing in a void.

Not empty.

Endless.

Fragments of broken worlds drifted like shattered glass suspended in nothingness. Distant echoes of screams and thunder rippled through the dark.

And before him—

The silhouette.

Vast.

Indescribable.

A shape that shifted between forms — humanoid for a heartbeat, cosmic storm the next. Eyes like collapsed stars burned within it.

We are not done.

The voice vibrated through him.

Not sound.

Meaning.

Your path begins now, Chosen.

Kai tried to speak but his body felt distant.

"What are you?" he forced out.

We are the Remnant of the First Fracture.

The void trembled.

We were sealed. Forgotten. Scattered.

But the Gate weakens.

Others will awaken.

Kai's pulse pounded.

"Others like me?"

A pause.

Some will carry fragments.

Some will carry ambition.

Some will carry ruin.

The presence leaned closer.

You carry potential.

The word felt heavy.

Potential for what?

Before he could ask—

The void cracked.

A ripple tore through the darkness like something pushing from the other side.

The silhouette shifted.

They stir.

The connection snapped.

Kai collapsed onto the lab floor.

Air rushed back into his lungs painfully.

Rei caught him before his head struck the metal tiles.

"Kai! Stay with me!"

Arden rushed to the console. "Energy spike just registered off-scale!"

Kai blinked rapidly. The lab lights were steady again.

"It contacted me," he rasped.

Rei's grip tightened slightly. "What did it say?"

He swallowed.

"It called itself… the Remnant of the First Fracture."

Arden froze.

"That term doesn't exist in any archive."

"It said others will awaken," Kai continued. "Some with fragments. Some with ambition. Some with ruin."

Rei and Arden exchanged a look.

"Then this isn't random mutation," Rei said quietly.

Arden nodded slowly. "It's activation."

A deep vibration rolled through the facility.

Not violent.

Subtle.

But real.

The hologram flickered.

New energy readings spiked across the projection map.

Multiple points.

Rei stepped toward the console. "Those aren't inside Haven."

"No," Arden said grimly.

The markers were scattered across the surface.

Across continents.

Across what remained of the world.

Kai pushed himself upright.

"It's starting," he whispered.

"The second Eclipse."

Arden's expression darkened.

"If multiple hosts awaken simultaneously, power balance collapses. Governments will panic. The factions will move."

Rei's jaw tightened.

"And if one of them turns hostile…"

Kai finished the thought.

"We won't just be fighting monsters anymore."

Another tremor passed through Haven Core.

Deeper this time.

From below.

All three of them felt it.

Rei turned slowly toward the reinforced floor.

"That didn't come from the surface."

Arden checked the lower-sector sensors.

His face drained of color.

"There's an energy bloom forming beneath Haven."

Kai's heart skipped.

"Beneath?"

"Deep foundation levels," Arden confirmed. "Something is responding."

The memory of the silhouette's final words echoed in his mind.

They stir.

Rei drew a slow breath.

"Then the rift wasn't the threat."

Kai looked at the scattered awakening signals on the map.

"It was the signal."

Another vibration rippled through the ground — stronger now.

Somewhere far below Haven Core, something ancient shifted.

And for the first time since humanity retreated underground—

The darkness beneath them felt far more dangerous than the world above.

Kai's Fragment pulsed again.

Not wildly.

Steadily.

Like a heartbeat syncing with something vast.

Whatever was coming…

It wasn't just coming for the world.

It was coming for him.

And this time—

He was certain.

He would not face it alone.
