When we enter the surgical suite to examine the infected woman, the severity of her condition hits me like a physical blow. The desperation and rage that drove her to this point becomes crystal clear.
I have no alternative but to open her up completely. An infection this aggressive requires total removal of all contaminated tissue.
The moment my scalpel breaks through her skin, the stench nearly overwhelms me. I pause, forcing myself to breathe steadily despite the revolting odor. What would be unbearable for humans becomes torture for shifters with our heightened senses.
Adaline immediately presses her hand over her nose and mouth. "If you need to be sick, leave now," I command her sharply.
She shakes her head firmly, and I watch her battle against the waves of nausea. "Try breathing through your mouth. It won't eliminate the smell, but it makes it bearable," I advise.
